EMQ’s With CHASING EMBERS
Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Kyiv, Ukraine based Alternative Metal band, Chasing Embers. Huge thanks to lead vocalist Julia Tallina for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hi everyone, Julia Tallina here, lead singer for Chasing Embers – alternative metal band from Kyiv, Ukraine. The band’s story begins in 2016 when former members of thrash metal band Raider were looking for a new singer. When I joined the group, we decided to start everything from scratch, including changing the band’s name and the music style. At the moment we have released a full-length album “Beckoning Call” and several music videos. Now we’re actively working on new material, which already sounds like a huge step forward. Can’t wait to share our new stuff with everybody, it’s gonna be sick, trust me!
How did you come up with your band name?
When we had to change the name one of the first options that I came up with was Chasing Embers. At first we were like: “Noo, it’s too corny and cheesy”. But after two months of struggling and attempts of getting a cool name, we just realized that Chasing Embers wasn’t that bad at all. And the cool part is that this name is quite abstract, and it can be interpreted differently, which very often can be found in our lyrics.
What country are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
For the last years, Ukrainian heavy scene has been rising. During that period, we got a lot of cool bands, which tour not only in Ukraine, but all over the world. I think many have heard of a band called Jinjer – it’s a Ukrainian band, who conquers the world with their infinite tours; or bands like Stoned Jesus and Sinoptik, who had toured both Europe and North America. Honestly we’ve got a lot of cool bands and talented musicians here, but metal is not that popular in Ukraine, so many of them are aiming for other countries.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single or Video)
Our debut Album “Beckoning Call” was released last Autumn. We also filmed two outstanding music videos for songs ‘Spiritual’ and ‘Silent House’, and also a tour compilation video for song ‘High Stakes’
Who have been your greatest influences?
The band members have had really different musical influences. For example, I grew up on nu metal of the 2000’s, our drummer Vlad has been influenced by old school thrash metal, guitarist Alex is a big fan of British rock. If you want us to give you a list of the strongest influences, it would be: SOAD, Linkin Park, Muse, Annihilator, Godsmack, Deftones, Mastodon, In Flames, Overkill, Primus, Papa Roach. Such a funny mix J From time to time we also listen to some pop music, there are a lot of good artists out there.
What first got you into music?
It was so long ago I can’t even remember J I used to sing a lot as a child, I loved music lessons in school. Looks like it couldn’t work any other way.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Right now I’m a big fan of Shinedown, Brent Smith is just a phenomenal singer, I wish to share a stage with him
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
I think Rock am Ring, it’s a dream for any up-and-coming metal band.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Listen to yourself and always do what makes you happy.
If you could bring one Metal/Rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Chester Bennington, definitely!
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Writing music, playing live, getting feedback – this is what makes me happy. The thing I dislike the most is that people tend to devalue your efforts.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I wish the music industry was more depended on talent and actual efforts, not on connections and amount of money.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Deftones – “White Pony”
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Downloads! Quick, easy, and always with you!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Art, dancing, science, philosophy! I think it’s yet to come.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Simple, my five buddies from Chasing Embers, they are my family.
What’s next for the band?
More gigs, singles and videos, tours, albums. The more the better!

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?
Never tried one, but it looks like an ordinary cookie J!
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Always remember that all bands, especially new ones, really need your support. Don’t forget to support them if you like what they do. Trust me, they are making a huge effort to keep on going with music.
