Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Prague, Czechia based Gothic Rock band Cathedral In Flames. Huge thanks to them for taking part!

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Cathedral In Flames is the resurrected legend of the 90’s gothic rock band. Formed behind the iron curtain in magical Prague. Two friends Phil Lee Fall and Gatsby in high school fell in love with postpunk and chose their way of creating music.

How did you come up with your band name?

Drunk? Stoned? Who knows! That was ages ago! But for sure not because of the Notre Dame fire. We hate burning churches; we love burning ideas. If you dislike anything fight it with your brains not through your zippo (did you get the message our black metal brothers?)

What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?

We are from the East. Prague, Czechia. Yes, we do have a lot of great metal bands like Master’s Hammer. Very niche genre but powerful. But we are not fucking metal. We are goths! This is a fucking difference.

What is your latest release (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We released EP “Children Of The Blackest Hole” at the end of last year so let’s say this year. 5 tracks and it’s been released on vinyl and of course all of the streaming platforms like Spotify, iTunes, Deezer, YT etc. Provided with a videoclip for single ‘Python’ on YT.

Who have been your greatest influences?

The Sisters Of Mercy, The Mission, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Damned, Fields of the Nephilim!

What first got you into music?

Phil Lee Fall: The moment when Gatsby gave me The Sisters Of Mercy tape.

Gatsby: The moment when I found out that I wanna be a bass player and to do my own music was when I heard ‘Disorder’ by Joy Division and Hooky’s bass riff.

Ambra von Bernstein: Dancing.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Gatsby: For sure with Madonna! Can you imagine the fun to have this crazy granny around?!

Phil Lee Fall: no fucking way!

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

We are not into festivals. In fact we hate it. So next question…

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Dead bat. We know that, especially these days, it sounds creepy but years ago that was a nice submission. And we threw it right to the dustbin so no eating, no spreading viruses. Oh God, we are not freaks like Ozzy!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Buy and stream our music! Not only because it is fucking awesome, but we also need to earn some money for black limo!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Let them all rest in peace! But we still miss Ian Curtis (Joy Division singer). But we bet if he would wake up these days he’d escape again.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

It is just a pure pleasure doing music. It’s an escape from reality! And there is nothing to hate. All we do must be fun. If it wasn’t, we’d quit!

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

All those fucking reality shows and contests that produce so much useless crap.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Phil Lee Fall: Fields Of The Nephilim – “Elizium”

Gatsby: Joy Division – “Unknown Pleasures”

Ambra von Bernstein: The Sister of Mercy – “Floodland”

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

At the Church of St. Martin in the Wall.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Phil Lee Fall: Dealer

Gatsby: Gambler

Ambra von Bernstein: Vet

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Charles Bukowski, Ennio Morricone, Martin Hannett, Iggy Pop, Pablo Picasso.

What’s next for the band?

Intensive work on a new album with the working title “Desperado”. The single is going to be released in June. The entire album at the end of this year. And also work on the live show. This is very much important and demanding. We are maximalists in it so the show must be astonishing and something that every visitor will remember for the rest of his life.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Facebook, Instagram, Bandcamp and all the streaming platforms.

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

See Wiki: Jaffa Cakes are biscuit-sized cakes introduced by McVitie and Price in the UK in 1927 and named after Jaffa oranges.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Not at all. Thanks for the nice questions and stay in love with the music. It doesn’t matter what it is (as long as it’s not shit).
