EMQ’s with LUTHARO

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Hamilton, Canada based Melodic Death/Thrash band, Lutharo. Huge thanks to vocalist, Krista Shipperbottom, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Krista Shipperbottom and I am the lead vocalist in Lutharo. The band was started back in high school by guitarist Victor Bucur as something for fun but shortly after I joined in 2013 the band got more serious and decided to make it a full time project.

How did you come up with your band name?

“Lutharo” is an elvish word meaning “the enchanter”. We came up with this because of our love for “Lord of the Rings”. We figured having something in elvish would be cool.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

I am from Canada and the scene here (at least before the pandemic) was pretty good! People here are pretty passionate about metal!

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our latest release is a full length album entitled “Hiraeth”, released on 15th October!

‘To Kill Or To Crave’ (Official Video)

Who have been your greatest influences?

Angela Gossow definitely has to be one of my greatest influences. Without hearing her I probably would have never started screaming.

What first got you into music?

Music has always been a part of my life from the moment I was born. My dad especially loves music and going to concerts so I guess you could say it’s in my blood.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Too many to choose from! I would say maybe blues musician “Beth Hart”.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Probably Wacken or Hellfest, I think both of those titles speak for themselves.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Nothing strange that I can recall…yet.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

If you have a dream or passion do whatever you can to fulfil it no matter what anyone says.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

That’s WAY too hard of a question.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Writing music and watching it grow from the ground up/watching other people enjoy it, is the best part of being a musician. There’s nothing better than seeing your own art effect other people especially when they’re across the world. I wouldn’t say I hate anything. There are a few things that can be stressful but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

The music industry should focus more on people who are authentic and have a strong message rather than just what’s catchy.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

My favourite album of all time is “Black Sabbath” by “Black Sabbath”.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

All of them are good as long as you’re supporting the artist.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

The best gig we played was definitely opening up for “Alestorm” a few years ago in Toronto!

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I have no idea and I hope I never need to find out.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Tony Iommi, Beth Hart, Angela Gossow, Robert Plant and Zakk Wylde. All off the top of my head.

What’s next for the band?

Hopefully, a lot of touring and another full length album!

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

I had to google this, but they honestly look like a cookie or biscuit to me. Sorry if I offended some people.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you so much for having me! Stay safe and stay metal!
