EMQS with THEY WATCH US FROM THE MOON

Hi Everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with USA Operatic Space Doom band, They Watch Us from The Moon. Huge thanks to their Guitarist, Shane Thirteen, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Shane Thirteen. I play guitar and I write most of the songs and lyrics. The band started in summer of 2017. We just started as a weekend hobby band that made noise. After a few songs came
together, we realized we have a really cool sound. We put out an EP that was really a demo in March or 2020. We released it on bandcamp and it made the rounds in the Doom scene, and we came out number 30 on the Doom Charts in March of 2020.

How did you come up with your band name?

We started under a different name. After about a year we realized the band was changing into a psychedelic stoner doom band. We came upon the name after searching for a project name for a demo. After realizing the name alone was too attractive to be just an EP title we became… THEY WATCH US FROM… THE MOON!

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

Lawrence Kansas USA.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We released a brand new single ‘Return To Earth’ on 12/10/21. Then another single before our album release in the spring of 2022. Moon Doom! is currently available on Bandcamp. https://theywatchusfromthemoon.bandcamp.com/

Who have been your greatest influences?

David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Dead Boys, Kyuss, Sleep. Clutch and Fu Mancu to name a few. I got to be in bands back in the 90’s and early 2000’s that were fortunate enough to open for Clutch and Kyuss. I saw Sleep open for Hawkwind in 93 ish and I was hooked on Stoner metal from there on out.

What first got you into music?

I liked rocker chicks and rocker chicks dig rock and roll dudes. LOL!

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Bill Fisher from Church of the Cosmic Skull. I love that band. I think he is clicking on the same idea we are. Smartly constructed concept rock with pop sensibilities and an edgy feel and sound. Love the imagery they use and the way they use the concept to explore the brand. Brilliant!

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Waken Open Air. It is one of the biggest in the world! Sounds like a blast!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Pictures of a fan that passed away.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Aliens are real. It is egotistical to think out of all the billions of stars ours is the only one with intelligent life on it.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

David Bowie. The Star Man. He was a genius and I miss him terribly in the world.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love expressing the story in concept and lyrics. I often hide life and love experiences within the lyrics and relate them to storyline and characters. But the best thing of all is having someone tell you the music speaks to their heart. The only thing I hate about it is that there aren’t more hours in the day to do it.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I would make it so at least one local band opens every touring act’s show in a city. No matter what the level there would need to be a local artist on the bill.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Blues For The Red Sun” by Kyuss. I know it forward and backward.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or Downloads?

The way of the world right now is Downloads for most. Vinyl for the hip and cool. I’m cool with what anyone needs to get what they need from the music.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

We opened for Wo Fat and COVEN at the Harvest of Doom Fest in October before Covid hit. Amazing show!

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Mumbling incoherently on a street corner with a tin cup and a puppy.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Cheetah Chrome, Tony Iommi, Robert Smith, Roger Waters, and Mark Hennessy.

What’s next for the band?

We are booking shows and tours for spring and summer. We plan on letting the world know we are out here. We have our own comic book we are rebooting with famed Horror artist Rick Lara. We plan on putting out new music and videos all through the winter and summer.

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Where I’m from we call it a cookie so I think on your end of the pond it’s called a biscuit.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you so much for your support. This is a very exciting journey and we are eager to bring this wild idea to the world.
