Review by Richard Oliver
8/10
“A Fate Unbroken” is the debut full length album from Maryland thrashers Ninth Realm. Altogether this is the fourth release from the band. Having released three prior EPs, “A Fate Unbroken” marks their first full album and first release for Mercenary Press.
Ninth Realm very much have a fantasy element to them both lyrically and in their artwork which is normally reserved for power metal and black metal bands but what Ninth Realm offer up musically is some bone crushing thrash with nods to hardcore included in the package as well. It is very much an old school thrash sound and the band musically are very much of the style popularised by modern thrash acts such as Power Trip, Enforced and High Command but Ninth Realm also throw in some death metal twists and turns (especially in the vocals department) resulting in a wonderfully gnarly sounding album. A nicely raw sound to the album helps these gnarly riffs rip out of the speakers and tear the flesh from the unsuspecting listener with thrash belters such as ‘Plea To The Heavens’, ‘Evoke Thy Wrath’ and ‘Armageddon’s Howl’ guaranteed to get necks wrecked and pits spinning. There is also a nice amount of variation on the album such as the mid-paced atmosphere of ‘Ondreis’, the traditional heavy metal leanings of ‘Eternal Lance’ and the melodic title track which brings the album to a close.
“A Fate Unbroken” is an impressive debut from Ninth Realm. When this album thrashes it does it hard but the thrash heavy moments are also offset by a nice amount of variation and some fantastic songwriting and compositions. It is a short album coming in at just over 33 minutes but this is definitely a case of quality over quantity. Ninth Realm are another band proving that thrash will never die.
