To commemorate the 35th anniversary of the label, Peaceville Records have compiled a compilation of various black metal leaning artists on their roster titled “Dark Side Of The Sacred Star”. This compilation is made up of new songs or unique alternative versions of songs which can only be found on this release. It comprises twelve songs from well known and influential artists as well as some newcomers to the label.
The music featured within the compilation is all of a black metal persuasion but varies between the artists in the style of black metal from the blackened heavy metal of Darkthrone, the avant-garde leanings of Sigh, the old school black metal worship of Mork, the blackened thrash of Hellripper and the primal black metal attack of Doedsmaghird. Highlights include brand new songs from Norwegian black metal legends Mortem and Dødheimsgard but there are also some new names on this compilation which stand out and will definitely be worth keeping an eye out for such as the wonderful raw old school black metal of Avmakt and the new project from former Mayhem guitarist Blasphemer – the unrelenting RUiM.
“Dark Side Of The Sacred Star” is a great compilation for any black metal fanatic and the fact that these songs can only be found on this release ensures it will be a collectors item for underground metal record collectors. There is a nice mix of styles and sounds throughout the compilation but this is probably not one for the casual listener and one for big time black metal fans. It has done a good job though and introduced me to two new bands who I shall be keeping on my radar.
