EMQ’s With Segmentia

EMQ’s With Segmentia

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Finnish Heavy Metal band, Segmentia. Huge thanks to their drummer, Jere Luokkamäki, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Jere Luokkamäki and I play drums in Segmentia. The band started as a covers band around 2012 and we played all kind of music, for example Finnish pop music, but also music from Paramore, Nirvana, Avenged Sevenfold, Porcupine Tree… I just mentioned a few. I had just ended things up with my old band, Celesty, and some point I thought that now is the time to start making my own music again. This time I wanted to compose music with a female vocalist. It took some time but on 2019 we released our first EP “Shanghai”, in January 2023 we are releasing our second EP “Alone”.

How did you come up with your band name?

At first, we named our band as “Seventh Segment”, but just before our first EP release I wanted the band’s name to be only a one word and I invented the name Segmentia. We combine several music styles in our songs, like segments. So, there is a clue of our music in the name.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We live in Seinäjoki, which is located in Southern Ostrobothnia, Finland. Seinäjoki is a small town but the music scene in here is very active! We have a great club called Rytmikorjaamo where is venues from rap to metal and also the legendary bar 15.

What is your latest release?

We have released 3 singles from our upcoming EP “Alone” All of these singles have a Video also. The 1st Single “Forget Me” was released 5th of August 2022, the 2nd Single “Alone” was released 30th of September 2022 and the 3rd Single “Save Me” released 11th of November 2022.

Who have been your greatest influences?

I take influences of all kinds of music. Basically, there isn’t genre or style of music what I don’t listen to as long as it is a good song. I listen a lot of Pop and Rock but also Black Metal and sometimes Classical Music as well. Usually, I enjoy of the melodies and rhythms which makes me feel something deep or reminds me of my childhood memories. People of my life inspires me, but generic stories of all people’s lives are also very inspiring, good books or movies too. Sometimes when I see something interesting in nature my mind can fly to somewhere and I invent a story and this way it might give me idea of some melody or even a whole song. It is quite nice that you never know what kind of a situation will start the idea to a new song or story!

What first got you into music?

When I was 6 years old, my parents asked if I would like to start playing accordion and I said yes. I played that for about 5 years and got lessons to that as well. Then suddenly I didn’t want to play it anymore! My first touch to drums were when I was 11 or 12 years old and almost right away, I was in love! Because I stopped playing accordion my parents didn’t want to get me my own drum set so I had to practice on my friend’s place for a quite long time. Finally, my cousin found me my first drum set and the ruthless practicing stated. My first band was with my friend, he played guitar and I played drums and it was those times when I decided that this is it, I want to be a drummer in a band.

First bands I listened (and actually still do) were all kind of Finnish pop and rock bands, LP’s that my parents had. My cousins who were few years older than me, recorded music from Roxette, Bad Boys Blue, etc. Then a new boy moved into my village, and he saw my room with posters like Roxette and almost right away he teared the poster off the wall and replaced it with Metallica poster! I was about 10 years old or something.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I don’t know, there is so many great bands and artists I would like to play with. So, lets say that it would be cool to play with my band AND an orchestra once again.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Hmm, maybe Roskilde and because it’s a huge festival but also because I have never been there. So, it would be great to be there for the first time and play live!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Still waiting for the first one 🙂

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thank you for being <3

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Jimi Hendrix.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love to spend time in our rehearsal and just play with the guys, but I also enjoy practising by myself. I love composing music and writing stories. I also enjoy the feeling after the show if everything has gone well. I hate waiting! And one needs to be patient, especially in the beginning where we are now.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

This is very difficult question and I actually think about this quite often. Sometimes I’m tossing around the idea that if I could make a radical change to the industry would it eventually be a better to everyone, or just from my point of view? Of course, I would for example like that the physical music would sell better, but the other side is that we shouldn’t create plastic waste so much. Luckily, people can choose what they want to listen so, to start, we just need to make sure our music is available. But if one has to make a change, it will do good in every professional field to boost our positive attitude towards others.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Only one! hmm, I say Helloween: Time of the Oath.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Personally, I like Vinyl or CD’s and because I like to look the covers and booklets while I’m listening to the music. When I was younger, I always checked who had written the music or lyrics, which studio was used for the recordings, who has mixed the album… Even the “thank you” lists.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

We are taking our first steps as a band so I honestly cannot pick one yet. So, I can say that every time when we have a show and the audience decides to fly with us, that feels awesome!

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I don’t know. If I wouldn’t play any instrument or if I wouldn’t have the need to compose music I probably would work in a studio as a producer or as a sound Engineer.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Ville Valo, Björn Ulvaeus, Sharon den Adel, Uli Kusch and Keanu Reeves.

What’s next for the band?

We are getting ready for our upcoming shows in Finland in the start of 2023. We have also started demoing some new songs for our upcoming album. So, we are pretty excited about that! One can say that maybe we are going to a little bit darker and heavier direction with those new songs.

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

Not a clue, but let’s say Barm Cake 😀 😀 In Finland that is “voileipä” or “sämpylä”, ha ha!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for the interview! Cheers from Finland and hey Britain, we definitely would like to play there soon!
