EMQ’s With VISITANT

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with USA Black/ Death Metal band, Visitant. Huge thanks to them for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

We are Visitant. I’d say we are a mixture of Black Metal and Death Metal, but not limited to. We formed in 2021 and have been writing music ever since. The idea for the band started with vocalist Chelsea Strickland, who contacted guitarists Matthew Brown and Taylor Tidwell who quickly started to create the sound for Visitant. Followed soon by bassist Terran Fernandez and Drummer Anthony Lusk-Simone to round out the line-up and solidify the sound.

How did you come up with your band name?

Chelsea came out with the band name from the show “Haunting On Hill House” which resonated with her at the time. She was experiencing some interpersonal situations that were reminiscent of the show and it inspired the name.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

The band is fairly spread out, but the home base is Nashville, TN where Chelsea and Matt reside. The music scene in Nashville is very vibrant.

What is your latest release?

Our latest Release is our debut single “Dematerialization” and we have an EP dropping in 2023.

Who have been your greatest influences?

We all share a wide variety of influences. I’d say collectively Opeth, Naglfar, Ihsahn, Gojira, Abigor, and many others inspire what we do.

What first got you into music?

I think we all got into music at an early age. First through our parents and friends. We have all been drawn to it for as long as we can remember.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I think a collaboration with someone like Ihsahn would be a dream come true. To share a musical creation and to watch his genius in motion would be great.

If you could play at any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

I think 70,000 tons would be an awesome festival to play so we could party on a boat. Maryland Death Fest would also be a dream gig for us.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

We, fortunately, have not received any weird gifts yet. Who knows what the future may hold for us though.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

To express yourself and be true to yourself.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

I think all of us have people we wish could come back. Trevor Strnad, Alexi Laiho, Chuck Shuldiner, Jimi Hendrix, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Sean Malone etc.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

We all really enjoy the craft of writing music, and the act of playing our instruments. It’s definitely a great and rewarding experience. I wouldn’t say we hate anything about it, some things are frustrating at times, like waiting to put out new music.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

It would be great if good artists could see the light of day, and be paid what they’re worth.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

I think one we all appreciate greatly is Opeth’s Blackwater Park. A fantastic album from start to finish. Definitely an inspiration for us.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

All are great in my book. Preferably vinyl just for the bigger art and great sound. Vinyl really feels like you’re collecting something special.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

We actually haven’t played in gigs yet, but we’re planning some for this year.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

We’d probably all be lawyers and doctors and such. Some maybe even farmers.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

The Undertaker, Bobcat Goldthwait, Mikael Akerfeldt, Rick Rubin, and Sage Francis would make for some interesting conversation I think.

What’s next for the band?

There’s much in the works for Visitant. A hefty amount of recording / writing and hopefully some shows in the near future. An EP in 2023 is happening as well.

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

We use basically everything we can to put our music out there.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

My guess will be tea cake, but I could be totally wrong. I need to touch on my British delicacies.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

We are very thankful to everyone who has listened to our debut. We have more coming soon.
