7/10
I’m sure I’m not alone in missing out on the first collaboration between Italian guitarist Dario Mollo and singer Carl Sentance that took place in 2016. That was Dario Mollo’s Crossbones album “Rock the Cradle”, one I’ll admit to having no knowledge about. I’m familiar with Sentance, currently singing for the legendary Nazareth but known from way back when he replaced John Deverill in Persian Risk, as well as working with Geezer Butler from 1986 -1988. Mollo has a pedigree too, with contributions to albums featuring Tony Martin, Don Airey, Graham Bonnet, and Glenn Hughes.
“Trapped” comprises 12 tracks including an interesting arrangement of the Deep Purple classic ‘Perfect Strangers’. It’s this track that highlights the quality in Mollo’s playing, for he hits all the right notes, but adapts Richie Blackmore’s guitar work to craft his own influence on the song.
It’s evident throughout the album that the Gillan and Blackmore influence runs deep. Sentance’s vocals are similar to the Deep Purple frontman in many ways, although the groove of Whitesnake isn’t far away either. And that’s no bad thing, for Twilight Road certainly bring music in the style and shape of classic hard rock.
The music is tight, the songs energetic and Sentance is on fine form. This isn’t a youthful outfit, but they bring a vibrance to their music which is warming and enjoyable. Hard rock isn’t always seen with the fondness that it deserves, but when you are in the mood, a collection of songs such as ‘Dark Angel’ and ‘Mafia’ can hit the spot.
While the hard rock is brought to you with the traditional guitar, bass, and drum set-up, there are also keyboards and a Hammond organ (thanks to Gianluca Sabbi) provided by Eddie George, Dario Patti and Sabbi that add subtle layers to the songs.
It may not be the most original album of 2023, but it’s certainly a very enjoyable and entertaining release. If you are in the mood for some classic hard rock brought to you by some veterans of the music scene, which includes some excellent guitar work throughout, then “Trapped” is certainly worth checking out.
