8/10
There were times when your choice of purchase was influenced by the album artwork. Back in the pre-internet days, that plunge into the unknown was often rewarded with a gem, and on occasion, an absolute stinker. Well, if I was in a record shop without the power of research, the latest EP by Spanish Death Metal Legends Avulsed would certainly have caught my attention and probably my pennies. The cover to “Extraterrestrial Carnage”, delivered by Daemorph Art, is described as a cosmic masterpiece. It’s an apt description and needs to be absorbed as part of the whole experience.
But what about the music I hear you ask. Avulsed has been delivering high level Death Metal since 1991, with their catalogue a veritable feast in terms of quality and quantity. Their last full-length album “Deathgeneration” is now seven years old, but the band have returned after a period of quiet to release two singles which now combine for this limited-edition release.
The two tracks on offer maintain the style in which we are accustomed. Both are bruisingly brutal, with thunderous double kicking, huge slabs of powerful riffs and Rotten’s guttural vocal delivery. But there is a phenomenal groove that underpins each of the tracks, with changes of tempo, no little melody and exceptional playing over each of the tracks.
Both have their similarities, but there are ample differences between each song as well. ‘Vile Evil Rotted Over’ simply bludgeons with a power that is unrelenting. The change in style for ‘Interglactical Gore Wars’ is immediate, with a chugging riff that encourages you to bang that head before the temperature increases and the band picks up pace. Both benefit from repeated plays, both are something special. Sometimes the masters merely flex their muscles for us to remember that they are still the top dogs at the table. Avulsed have sent a ripple across the Metal world. They are still here, alive, and very much kicking.
