Latvian folk/pagan metal giants Skyforger formed in 1995 out of the remains of doom metal band Grindmaster Dead. Most of band’s songs are about Baltic mythology, ancient gods and medieval warfare. They also play Latvian folk song concerts as a contribution to their national heritage. In total Skyforger has released 7 albums, and right now is working on yet untitled new metal album, which should be out sometime in 2024!

At this gig, they played 17 songs, including well know hits such as ‘Oh Fog, Oh Dew’, ‘Ūsins Rides Over the Hill’, ‘The Devil Slayer’, ‘In the Underworld’, ‘Colonel Briedis’, ‘Romuve’ and ‘The Stone Sentinel.’

During the concert, special guest Edgars Zilberts from the folklore group “Vilkači” (“Warewolwes”) played kokle for the group. “Kokle” is a Latvian plucked string instrument (chordophone) belonging to the Baltic box zither family known as the Baltic psaltery.

This was a great gig, and I look forward to catching their new album when it drops next year.
