More than just a thrash band was how lead singer Alon Karnieli described Sinnery in our recent interview. This is an EP that demonstrates just what Sinnery are about. And he’s right, while they do retain a thrash element, the band’s full force aural assault is more technical, more complex, and more engaging than many thrash outfits around today.
Now into their second decade as a band, with drummer Liam Fine the most recent addition, Sinnery are powering forward with four tracks that Alon described as the best work they have ever done. With two albums behind them, including 2022’s Black Bile, that’s a strong claim, but one listen to the likes of ‘Somber’ and you’ll understand why he is so proud of this release.
It’s a frantic start, with the short, pummelling delivery of ‘Somber’, a brutal, no-holds barred explosion of metal that blends multiple styles in a raging maelstrom. Underneath the savagery of the onslaught that is unleashed, there is a technical quality that combines the extremes of death metal with the vibrancy of modern metal in a three-minute blast. ‘An Ode (Knife of Erato)’ maintains the momentum, full throttle aggression with Alon’s strangulated vocals somehow fitting the music completely. There are hints of Gojira lurking across the EP, and the band are happy to acknowledge the influence of the French behemoths.
A short interlude of ‘We Just Want You To’ provides an advertisement for the band’s social media options, but it’s so short you could be confused for thinking it’s the intro to ‘Share This’. Probably the heaviest number here, it’s also the fastest, a two-minute white knuckle ride that bucks like a wild bull. It leads in frantic style to the closing track, ‘Serene’, which is anything but that. It’s here that the Gojira influence is most evident, not that it detracts from the overall quality that is on offer here.
Full of passion, energy, and commitment, Sinnery have produced a fine EP which they can be rightly proud of. Their forthcoming UK tour will see them touch down in some fine venues across the UK. Do yourself a favour and get along to one of them. These guys deserve it.
