EMQ’s With Huronian

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Italian Melodic Death/ Black Metal band, Huronian. Huge thanks to their vocalist, Daniele Lupidi, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Daniele Lupidi, I am Huronian’s vocalist and one of the founding members together with Umberto Poncina (guitars). We formed in 2020 with the idea of bringing back some vibes and atmospheres of early/mid nineties Melodic Death and Black Metal. Our first demo was released digitally shortly after and the debut album called “As Cold as a Stranger Sunset” saw the light in 2021. The album was promoted with two mini tours and other local shows. A new EP, “Beyond Frozen Heights” will be released on September 15th via Gruesome Records and we can wait to bring this new material on stage around Europe.

How did you come up with your band name?

I was thinking about an evocative name, something distant from daily routines and issues. Huronian Glaciation was a geologic event that happened more than two billion years ago, I thought it could be a perfect name for what we had in mind.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are from Italy, Emilia Romagna and Veneto regions. The extreme Metal scene is pretty alive here, there are many bands, not so many live clubs and a good amount of Metal fans.

What is your latest release?

Two lyric videos from our upcoming EP have just been released, check them on the Gruesome Records official YouTube Channel!

Who have been your greatest influences?

A. Early Swedish Melodic Death and Death/Black Metal bands: At the Gates, Eucharist, early Dark Tranquillity, Dissection, Unanimated, Sacramentum to name a few.

What first got you into music?

A few tapes in my parents “collection” got me started but my obsession began when I bought an Iron Maiden live album when I was 11.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Not exactly current, but I’d like to collaborate with early At the Gates Guitar master Alf Svensson and see what he would come up with in terms of guitars intricate arrangements hahaha.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Maryland Deathfest… The line up is always top notch and we would reach an interesting audience.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I don’t think we are big enough to recieve stuff like that hahaha.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Keep an eye on us, we are working to reach as many of you as possible in the coming months.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Rock stars don’t attract me too much, I’d rather like to see many underground heroes that left us too soon back on stage. Brett Hofmann of Malevolment Creation would be one of them for sure, a huge influence for me as a vocalist.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I Iove the creative side and the live performances. I hate being forced to promote my music on social networks on a constant basis hahaha.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I’d go back to the nineties, unfortunately time machines haven’t been invented yet.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

I’d go with a not super famous one. Sacramentum’s “Far Away from the Sun”. I had the pleasure of see the band playing it in its entirety recently, it is a fantastic album.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

For me cassettes and CD.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

With Huronian I have great memories of our 2022 show in Madrid, the crowd was pretty crazy.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Music Is not my job already, but I really cannot think about my life without It. I would paint and draw much more than now, I would probably try to organize personal exhibitions and stuff like that.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Steve Harris, Tony Iommi, Jeff Walker, Dave Lombardo, Robert Plant.

What’s next for the band?

“Beyond Frozen Heights” EP release on September 15th and a Balkan mini tour in November / December 2023.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

Thanks for making me google all those recipes hahaha. Before your question, I only knew what muffins were. I don’t know if it’s an answer, but tea cakes look delicious, from what I saw!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thanks for the interview, I hope my answers weren’t too boring haha.
