Satan’s Fall hail from Helsinki and are one of the growing list of new acts that dropped a debut during the early days of the pandemic, and therefore haven’t had the benefit of building a following through touring the arse off it round the toilets of Europe quite yet. Fortunately labels like Steamhammer are still pushing them hard. So hopefully they can get to connect with that all important live following, as this is a slab of solid Heavy / Power Metal; The kind that doesn’t go out of fashion thanks to young acts like this constantly relighting the candle of the masters, despite the fact they are now two generations removed from the days of their progenitors.

One thing that the pandemic seems to have kicked into touch is the annoying fad of young acts trying to ape the production values of the 80’s. Here, Satan’s Fall have headed straight for a punchy and modern mix, despite the clearly 80’s infused influence in the arrangements. Musically, this is rollickingly lively and energetic for its opening numbers, but plays with the pace and tone throughout, whilst losing none of the energy, even when they slow things down.

In fact, it’s that restrained energy that really carries this through, as let’s face it there are no shortage of acts playing this style of music, and energy and drive are what it takes to stand out from the pack. Miika Kokko has the kind of gruff vocal style, with a good octaval range, but is equally back in the mix with the rest of the players, which really helps create a cohesive band feel to their sound. The ten tracks, in the main, don’t hang about, and one is left with a sense that this is an act that needs to hone things a little live to see what works. But it’s a thoroughly solid sophomore from a highly promising bunch of new bloods.
