EMQ’s With STATE OF DECEIT

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with UK Groove/ Thrash/ Metalcore band, State of Deceit. Huge thanks to their Vocalist, Pete, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

I’m Pete, I do vocals for State of Deceit! We were formed from a previous project founded by Jon our guitarist, he got Matt (drums) and myself on board. Shortly afterwards we rebranded and founded State of Deceit in December 2018. We recorded our Debut EP Retribution, with Romesh Dodangoda which dropped in December 2019 just before that thing happened in 2020. We spent that downtime writing the next to be EP, but after the pandemic we were left without a bassist, we Found Davide, and at the same time Gareth and we completed State of Deceit! We recorded the bass and leads as well as 4 new tracks written with all 5 of us making ‘Stalked by Daemons’ recorded by the magic Tim Hamill!

How did you come up with your band name?

We were spitballing different names and we looked at our lyrics which were mostly political commentary and mental health issues, hence State of Deceit, both political and self-described.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are from the UK, Wales to be specific! The scene seems quite healthy with plenty of local gigs going on!

What is your latest release?

Our Debut Album, Stalked by Daemons! Available everywhere now! There are 4 music videos for you to enjoy joy too!

Who have been your greatest influences?

We all have different influences, I love my metalcore, bands like Currents, Fit For A King, Wage War, Motionless In White Parkway Drive, Jon and Gareth love his Pantera, Slayer, Anterior similar Davide listened to all of those and Matt loves his Britney Spears!

What first got you into music?

I just became drawn to it in my teens, I played the trumpet, jazz specifically. But it didn’t really do it for me. I used to listen to various bands. Fall Out Boy LINKIN PARK Green Day, Metallica used to have one of those those old mp3 players that you could only have 20 songs on, I’d change the band every week until I found Sum 41 from a friend, and from then I was hooked and wanted to be in a band! As I got a bit older I started getting into heavier music and here I am today!

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Bryan from Currents or Ryan from Fit For A King! As a band, probably someone like Howard Jones!

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Download Festival, I’ve been going regularly for years, it’s got to be the biggest Rock and metal Festival in the world!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

We don’t get many gifts, but I once got given a prosthetic leg to wave on stage! That was pretty wild!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thank you for listening to us, and please keep doing it! We love you all!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Personally, Ryan Siew who passed earlier this year.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I really enjoy playing music, it just makes me happy! I don’t hate any of it, but I’d love to play bigger stages and live closer to the guys in the band as we’re all quite spread out!

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I’d probably change how protective people are over their sub genres it gets a bit silly sometimes, if you like it who cares if it’s metalcore, or melodic death, it’s all metal!

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Colour Decay – The Devil Wears Prada- I listen to it every week.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

CD’s are best quality wise but I get them for merch. I just use downloads these days it’s just simpler! I think Vinyl’s are cool for art purposes.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

I’m not sure on best, but we played Bristol in July, that was one of the most fun as we just enjoyed ourselves, the penny dropped that night that we played better when we had fun not worrying about making mistakes and putting ourselves under pressure!

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Unfortunately, I’m not full time and I work for the Civil Service! So probably that still!

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

If it could be anyone – I’d probably have my son, my wife, my mum and my dad who passed away in 2009. As that’s only 4 I’d probably get my Grandad in (dads dad ) as he was an interesting person and had a secretive past involving nuclear physics!

What’s next for the band?

Gigs gigs gigs, and writing for the next release! We also have another video to come out probably early next year!

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

We’re @stateofdeceit on all social media www.StateofDeceit.com if you’d like to listen to ‘Stalked by Daemons’ use this link — https://ffm.to/sodsbd

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

It’s a roll or a bun, bap if it’s got breakfast bits in it! Anything else then please look in a mirror!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for having me, and thank you to the fans for listening! Come see us at a show near you, let us know where you want to see us!
