With no prior knowledge of Pharm before this landed in the inbox, it was very much taking a step into the unknown. A quick bit of hunting on the internet found very little information, and the blurb that accompanied this three track EP wasn’t particularly helpful – give us a bone guys when sending out your EPK.
Anyway, I now know that Pharm comprise three members, hail from Kelowna, BC, and play incredibly chaotic Progressive Stoner Metal which switches through genres, styles, tempos, and crosses boundaries at will. First track hits hard, a rambling, acceleration of thundering riffs, gravel-soaked vocals, and intermittent bursts of sheer power. Welcome to ‘Infinite Stairway of Madness’.
If you thought that four-minutes was crazed, then hold onto the ears as ‘No Mouth, No Scream’ follows. This is something a bit special. This is the special fried rice of Progressive Metal, flipping between Neurosis, Mastodon, Devin Townsend, Cynic and about a million more influences as it progresses. It’s unstoppable, relentless, and strangely endearing as it curves this way and that. One can only imagine the sensory overload that must come seeing them live.
Thankfully, Pharm finish with the shortest song on the EP, the riff heavy pound of the title track. There’s a full-on aural assault with this one, as it dips along with a pulsing vibe. Leaving food for thought, and the wonder about giving the debut album “Vortex” a listen, Pharm may not have been on the radar before – they certainly are now.
