9/10
Although this was my introduction to the Danish band, “A Certain End Of Everything” is Blazing Eternity’s 3rd album in 30 years… Bear in mind the band was on a hiatus for some of that time.
Musically the album has nods to bands such as Katatonia, early Anathema, Opeth and Weeping Silence. Therefore the songs are dark, slow and melancholic. Paradoxically they’re also very uplifting. The Death Metal vocals sound very emotional and I liked the way the band combines melody with atmosphere.
Of course ‘melancholic’ is not the same thing as ‘tedious’ and “A Certain End Of Everything” has several ideas which enrich the album, be it some classic Gothic vibes within a song, ‘clean’ choir vocals or a simple but effective keyboard intro. ‘Your Mountains Will Drown Again’ feels more upbeat than the other songs and yet it fits perfectly within the album’s spirit. ‘The Bells’, on the other hand, is an anthemic song that provides a fitting conclusion to the album. So yes, the album has many shades of black.
Apparently the members of Blazing Eternity had to deal with some personal tragedies while this album was taking shape and I’m sure that some of that gloom rubbed off onto the lyrics.
Ultimately though, the most significant quality of this album is the passion with which it was created. At least to these ears.
