It’s not new the incredible number of great bands coming from Finland. Maybe most of the Heavy Metal listeners think that Power and Symphonic Metal are the main styles there, considering the amount of those groups inside that hit the mainstream, but if you look further inside their music scenario, you can find a strong base of bands from more aggressive styles.
Maybe my brain is tricking me when I believe I heard a few interviews with Hardcore and Punk Rock bands in Brazil, that often tour in Europe, talking about the number of Crust or Grindcore bands in Finland when they were playing there. This popped up in my mind when I heard the first seconds of Beatrix’s new EP, because my first impression was something like “Cool, it’s a raw Crust/Grind album played exactly how it should be”.
To my surprise, when I read their press release, there is a part saying they play fast Black Thrash Metal with influences from NWOBHM. Well, they are right! The Black Metal addition may originate from the vocal style of Markus ‘Suffy’ Leppänen, which doesn’t sound exactly like the vocalists of Black Metal, but there are great elements coming from it.
The Thrash parts come in fast riffs that sound like the early eighties Bay Area bands, as the guitarists Aapo Härkönen and Alois Weimer do on the closing track ‘Zeraphine’. They also play short solos which maybe explains their NWOBHM influences. Overall, you can expect brutal and fast songs, with a good number of great riffs.
The recording production offers a raw sound, but it comes in a good measure. We still can hear all instruments, especially the powerful bass of Sakari ‘Röppä’ Juurijoki that could easily be hidden among this wall of instruments. The drummer Matias Rinnetie didn’t have an easy task here, either. Considering he is playing fast double basses that suddenly change to Thrash and Crust rhythms, I believe he had to work hard to record it.
This album shows a band that was born to play on stage, as if they are offering you an insane live experience. For sure “Deathsent Ceremony” is a good and short taste of Beatrix essence.
