Well, it already looks like 2025 is going to push new heights for really fucking great music that’s going to hit our eardrums, and hopefully, our souls. My review queue is already packed with stuff for February and beyond. And today’s subject, the new EP from Danish Melodic Metalcore band, Daze of June, is one of those.
Already with a huge number of streams, and inclusions in prominent playlists on streaming platforms under their belt, this EP has been hotly anticipated since the release of their sophomore album back in 2021. So, what do we have on offer here?
Opener ‘Hospital Bed’, featuring American Metalcore band Hollow Front, instantly sets the tone. It starts with a monster riff, accompanied with thunderous beats, and atmospheric samples giving it an edgy and spikey feel making you want to move. Then the punishing core vocals drop in. But there’s an element of tunefulness even to these. And we drop into clean sections, where these vocals really come to the front. There are some nice record scratch samples midway through the song, which enhance everything, too. Brutal but fun!
‘Secret Door’ is next. This starts off more Melodic Emo, with real quality vocals. Frontman Benjamin Julian Ganzhorn has a stunning clean vocal, with a great range, and lovely tone. And this track puts more of a heavy weighting on the cleans rather than the screams, which I like a lot. There is, however, a punishing mid-section full of dissonance and growls. It doesn’t outstay it’s welcome though! Blink and you’ll miss it.
Riffage is the name of the game in ‘Black Bones’. Namely a repeated riff that opens the track then keeps coming back in the verses, like a boomerang to smack you in the back of the head and refocus you! Hell of a catchy chorus in this one too, and a section that’s like being shot in the eardrums by some machine gun drumming.
Penultimate track ‘In Time’ again features a lot of clean vocals, and I really like the lyrics in this track. The line ‘We will savour all our memories and get through the night’ really resonates with me. And we get a classic Metal face-melting guitar solo in this track too.
‘Matriarch’ brings the EP to a close. This is a track full of anger, which comes across in the instrumentation. Pacey and gritty with verses delivered in screams and choruses delivered in clean vocals. Reading the lyrics, I’m still not sure which angle this song is coming from – is it the Matriarch who has hurt the protagonist, or is the Matriarch the only solace for this poor lost soul? Either way it’s a great track and my favourite on the EP, especially the growled ‘MATRIARCH’ that brings the song to an end.
So… the downside of this EP – fade outs in 3 out of the 5 tracks. I’m not going to bang on about how much this annoys me, because I sound like a stuck record. Finish the damn song!! Don’t let it disappear to nothing; it’s such an anti-climax! I’ll let them off with ‘Black Bones’ as it fades to just vocals, which then do finish instead of a further fade. And they get a point back for having a song called ‘Matriarch’, which pleases me because I’m old, and bored of the Patriarchy!
