EMQs With Space Eater
EMQs With Space Eater
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Serbian Old School Melodic Thrash band, Space Eater. Huge thanks to their Vocalist/ Guitarist, Luka, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is Luka Matković and I sing and play guitar. Space Eater was founded by the original singer Boško Radišić back in 2004, with the idea to play old school Melodic Thrash Metal. They released the album “Merciful Angel” in 2007. Unfortunately, he tragically passed away in a fire in 2009, and I was called to replace him. After some line-up changes, we toured Europe twice and released two more albums “Aftershock” (with Boško’s demo vocal recordings) and “Passing Through the Fire to Molech”. In 2016, the band went into hiatus, but we have reunited this year!
How did you come up with your band name?
The band took its name from the Gamma Ray song “Space Eater”.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We are from Serbia, in the Balkans. The Metal scene is very rich here with many talented bands, but due to our region’s financial and political situation, most of us never really make a career out of it.
What is your latest release?
We have just re-released our album “Passing Through the Fire to Molech” through Doc Gator Records, fully remixed and remastered by me!
Who have been your greatest influences?
Forbidden, Agent Steel, Overkill, Sepultura, Megadeth, Kreator, Anthrax, Slayer, Testament, Toxik, Heathen, Intruder, mostly the US Thrash Metal scene.
What first got you into music?
I’ve had some friends introduce me to hip-hop and break-beat when I was 9 years old, then a friend introduced me to Limp Bizkit, which shifted my interest towards guitar music. Honestly, at that point, I knew music was going to be a huge part of my life. And then a friend’s brother gave me a Death CD (Leprosy) when I was 12. That was the first real old school record I’d listened to.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Toxik, Forbidden, Anthrax… Either tour with them, or produce their albums!
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Probably Wacken, because it has the biggest crowds! It’s always a battle to reach as many people as you can…
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
I once received a stolen stone cross from a grave… Still keep it in my room.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Appreciate music and never take it for granted!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Probably Gar Samuelson from Megadeth…
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Writing and producing records is by far my most favourite activity! I hate not having the finances to bring a full crew on the road. It would be so great to have a team of people working towards bringing the people our best possible show.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Well, the industry mostly gives the majority of people what they want, so it’s not the industry’s fault, but I’d definitely ban streaming.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Toxik’s “Think This” and Anthrax’s “Among the Living”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs or Downloads?
For me personally, I used to love CDs. I loved listening to music outside in my car or using a discman. But nowdays, it’s really hard to find a CD player, so I guess downloads are second best. I own vinyl but I never play them, it’s just a collector’s item.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Probably my favorite gig ever was with my band Quasarborn at Decaying With the Boys festival a couple of years ago.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I’d probably be a personal trainer, a lawyer, or a hitman!
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Some of the world leaders, so I could ask them: “What the fuck are you doing?!?”
What’s next for the band?
We’re planning to release some new music, so stay tuned!
What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

There’s a long-standing food-based debate here in the UK. And we’d like your help. So… A Jaffa cake – is it a cake or a biscuit? Discuss!
A biscuit! You can touch it with your fingers and not get totally messed up! But in Serbian, the word for biscuit is “keks” which is literally “cakes”…
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thank you for these fun questions!
