Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Matt Jones of Manchester based band Twisted Illusion. Huge thanks to him for taking part!
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
I’m Matt Jones. I am the founding member and primary songwriter of the band. Since 2016 TI has released 3 records and toured across the UK. The band is now gearing up to the release of a trilogy entitled “Excite The Light”.
How did you come up with your band name?
Band name generator. It’s alright I guess. Never really cared for band names. Most trivial thing.
What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?
UK. I wouldn’t know. I don’t do scenes. I just do TI. I’m not arsed what other bands are doing.
What is your latest release (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Night Light. (Single/Video)
Who have been your greatest influences?
Most recently Devin Townsend and his “Empath” record but in general it’s been Rush, Toto and a lot of Jeff Buckley.
What first got you into music?
Green Day, American Idiot.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Devin Townsend.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Download, because it’s big and so are my songs.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Gifts are never weird. Unless they are!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Love you cunts.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Ronnie James Dio.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I hate the apathy to talent. I love playing live and someone getting something from my songs.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Prosecute people who steal music. If you do, Fuck yourself.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Jeff Buckley – Grace
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
CD’s! Highest sound quality. Vinyl is great but doesn’t sound remotely as good as a CD.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Bloodstock 2017.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I would be dead. I have nothing else to offer.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
I wouldn’t have a dinner party.
What’s next for the band?
UK tour in May and then finishing the Excite the Light trilogy! Then hit the ground running in 2020.

Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Ever Metal favourites Lullaby For A Unicorn who, by the way, are from the Fantasia land of ‘Funicorn where they reside with Tiffany the inflatable unicorn. Huge thanks to Dan for supplying such wonderfully in depth and funny answers to the questions!
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hi, I’m Dan and I play the guitar.
We’ve also got Justin on Vocals, Baxter on Bass and Gaz on Drums.
History of the band? Depends how far back you want to go! 😊
The band officially came into being in August 2017 when we started the Facebook page, which as we all know is the only time things become official. We had been jamming around with songs and generally arsing about for a few months prior to that.
It started from the ashes of another band we were all in that played its last ever gig as the first band on at Pentrefest 2017. I’d got bored of trying to be “edgy” or “different”, so I figured I’d form a doom metal band that didn’t take itself too seriously.
I can’t write doom metal songs.
So, we kind of became the thrash metal type of thing we are now.
After taking a break from music and performing for a while I managed to coax Justin out of retirement on the promise that
a) He wouldn’t have to drive to *all* the gigs;
b) There would be rum;
c) It would be fun
Fortunately for us he said yes!
How did you come up with your band name?
Well, there’s a bit of confusion over that; I think it was Baxter that came up with the name, but I may have misheard him. Someone said it again, everyone laughed, so it stuck.

What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?
Wales, in the UK. There are lots and lots of musicians up our end, but they aren’t very metal. The further along the coast towards England you go the more metal it becomes.
There are some great bands up this end of the world though but there seems to be a general lack of enthusiasm to play anywhere but the local pubs, which is a shame because I think a lot of them would go down really well.
This is one actual decision we consciously made: to not play the local bars that we have been playing for years – we are purposefully going for places that we’ve not been before.
What is your latest release (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Yeh, we’ve been a bit lazy on that front. There is a live album that was recorded for our first outing to Manchester at the Star and Garter when we played with the phenomenally good Impavidus. It was being recorded and we asked if they could record our set too – so they did.
Being a bit lazy and forgetful we decided to release that as a live album because let’s face it, we aren’t going to finish our actual album any time soon!
We are working on the rest of the songs for “I can’t believe they aren’t better” though, promise!
To be fair though we are having too much fun playing live to sit around our HQ recording drums for hours on end!

Who have been your greatest influences?
Personally, that’d be Scott Ian and James Hetfield! I’m a fan of rhythm guitar more than lead, mainly because I’m not too good at the ole’ widdly woo stuff!
I used to jam along to “Among the Living” and “…And Justice for All” when I was just starting out. Also being in Mucus (Dan’s other band – Rick) with such an excellent guitarist as Duncan means that you learn to stand out by being a good rhythm player.
Anyway, I digress…
I’m heavily into melodies, harmonies and crunchy as hell guitars so I’d have to say a lot of my influences are a bit mixed up these days, although “good music is good no matter what kind of music it is”. And I will always be a big ABBA fan!
What first got you into music?
My parents were into live folk music in a big way, so I’d spend most Saturday afternoons in the Kings Arms pub in Bangor watching them and their friends jamming together. That must’ve influenced me somehow!
We’d also go to folk festivals once a year, mainly the one in Pontardawe in South Wales – I have vivid memories of wondering around the camp site talking to hippies, buying rubbish toys and bits of wood with my pocket money and watching all these weird musicians playing the living shit out of their instruments.
The only other thing I can remember listening to is Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” because my Mum liked it, and lots of 80’s pop because my sister was obsessed with it.
Then one day a friend of mine said that I should listen to a band called Metallica – and it all went downhill from there really.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Oh god – I’d hate to do that, I’m no good at thinking on my feet at all so it would petrify me to have to jam with someone that knows what they are doing.
I’m constantly worried that I’ll get found out as a fraud.
Having said that I think it would be cool to collaborate with someone who definitely isn’t metal: Stormzy would be interesting, as would someone like Taylor Swift or Katy Perry – you know, something so completely pop nobody would expect it! 😉
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Ooh, tough one – I’m supposed to say Download or Bloodstock aren’t I? Obviously they would be amazing but…
I think Coachella would be mad – I love California and the line-up can be a bit off the wall, would be fun to do that. Also, Glastonbury would be just an insane experience.
Amplified Festival too – Gary if you are reading this, we are available… still.
As well as making that one conscious decision I mentioned earlier, we did also decide that the goal for this band would be to play festivals. We aren’t that fussed about where on the bill, we just would love to be involved and be part of it all.
There are so many great grassroots festivals going now: Pentrefest, Beermageddon, Badgerfest, Breaking Bands to name just four. Being involved in any of them would be amazing. So far, we’ve done Pentrefest (some of us have done it twice, but we don’t talk about that anymore) which is just amazing and next year there’s HRH Metal which I’m not sure has sunk in yet. We’ll get back to you on that one! 😊
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
We haven’t really received anything from fans in this band. I might have to pass this one on to Justin; he toured extensively in his previous band Skinflick and had some “questionable” fans.
One of the loopiest things that has happened to date is the “mattress actress” Alexxa Vice wearing one of our caps for a selfie on her Instagram, that was a bit of a shock. She’s a cool person though, so having her as a fan would be rather mental!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Worry less, care more.
People get themselves in too much of a state worrying about shit they can’t control. Stop doing that, care more about the things you do and the people you do them with.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Another tough one; recently I think Chester Bennington – that hurt way more than I thought it would and I think he had a lot of songs left in him.
Further back – possibly Dimebag, I think he’d be interested to see the way guitar technology and “tone” has gone since his death. Things like the Line6 Helix (my personal favourite) and the AxeFX would be something he’d be up for messing about with.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Hanging about with friends, socialising, generally being a bit silly and meeting other like-minded people – that’s the best part.
Finding out about new equipment and buying it and then messing around with it and then trying to sell it is also a good part, but at the same time a very bad part of it (everything costs so much damn money).
The worst part of it is hanging around waiting for gigs to start – the hurry up and wait bit. Ugh, nightmare.
I have what I jokingly refer to as Temporal Anxiety – I get a bit wound up when I think I’ll be late for something. If we need to be at a venue by 7pm say and it’s a three hour drive you’d normally start off at 4pm – not me, I must be gone by lunch time so that we get there in plenty of time! It’s becoming a bit of an in joke now* – if we turn up stupidly early for a gig, that’s my fault. But then it does make the worst part of it all last longer! I can’t win!
*I say “in joke” I actually think it is driving Baxter ever so slightly mental.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
There appears to be two sides to the music industry now: there’s the traditional “get a record deal, make an album and tour indefinitely” side and then there’s the home made “record a few songs, do gigs and have a laugh” side of things.
I would like to see more support from the “industry” for the home-made guys but I’m not sure how that would work. As soon as you get industry people involved in things it tends to start becoming a bit more controlled and regimented and sort of ruins the fun. I suspect having a “recording deal” opens a few more doors for bands but some of us don’t want that, but would like other opportunities to get through the same doors… If that makes sense.
There’s an excellent interview with Matt from Evil Scarecrow about the “sovereignty” of his band – how they are their own thing, there’s no record company financing them and they do everything on their own. It was a great insight into how they’ve done what they do, can’t find the damn thing now though.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Oh FFS – one?
Christ on a bike, that’s a hard one (said the nurse to the vicar).
I want to say “Among the Living” by Anthrax, but I haven’t listened to it in years. When Devin Townsend’s “Addicted” album came out I must’ve listened to it constantly for at least a month so that’s got to be on the list somewhere.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Laser Disk FTW!
Vinyl – because of the ceremony of unwrapping it, putting it on the player and having to concentrate on the entire album without being able to skip tracks (unless you want to scratch the shit out of the record).
Downloads – Because they are instantly available, and I can listen to the same playlists wherever I am.
In an ideal world I would buy a new album on Vinyl and squirrel myself away somewhere for an hour or so and listen to it on vinyl. Then I’d put the songs I like onto a playlist on Spotify.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
I think the Christmas Gig we played in Mcleans Deeside with Deified, Second Time Round and Nights Tribunal. That was an insane gig where the planets seem to align, everyone got the humour and joined in.
Bringing free Christmas hats and throwing toilet paper into the audience certainly helped.
I think we are getting a bit of a reputation as being a messy band, so I think I might start bringing my Henry Hoover to gigs with us just so we can clean up the mess afterwards.
One of our worst ones was a gig in Nottingham, but that was because we simply weren’t very good. But it was good for us because we realised what was working and what wasn’t working at that point – so we ditched the capes and the silly hats and decided to concentrate on other funny things to do instead. So that could also be considered one of our best but for entirely different reasons!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Other than the day job, definitely something in the music industry – probably related to my existing skillset which is software development. But as everyone can do that now, I’m not sure.
I’m still picking what to do for my mid-life-crisis, it is a choice between working in a Zoo or being a gardener. It’s a tough one!
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
The people I usually invite: Our friends Paul and Antonia who Baxter met at an Evil Scarecrow gig when they got engaged on stage! Paul does our artwork (and I haven’t paid him yet, so I’d maybe not invite him to a dinner party… hmm). Baxter because he always brings Cards Against Humanity. Justin so we could plan some ludicrous stage ideas and/or videos and Gaz because he brings nice beer with him.
What’s next for the band?
I think we might have a dinner party!
Some more gigs this year, trying to stick to one a month so wives don’t get too annoyed with us and our children remember who we are. We are (as everyone is) competing in the M2M, we’ve got through to the next round, but the quality is so good I’m not sure we’ll get through.
We need to finish recording some songs and then do some videos! We’ve also got a photo shoot with your very own Beth to organise soon.
And then we need to start working out what we are going to do for HRH Metal – shit our pants probably.

They are called Jaffa Cakes.
Also, apparently, a biscuit is a biscuit because it is baked twice – Jaffa Cakes are baked once and therefore they are cakes.

Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with French Heavy Metal band Black Horizon. Huge thanks to them for taking part!
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hi. I’m Dom and I play bass guitar in BLACK HORIZON. We play heavy metal!!!
The band was born in the south of Paris in 1991 with my brother Seb and a great friend of us on the guitars. After many changes, Fifi (drums) arrived in 2002 and Alex (lead vocals) in 2017. We’ve played with many other bands like Blaze Bayley, Paul di Anno, Satan Joker, Killers, Tank… in France, Belgium, Russia… and recorded many EP and one LP “The Choice” before “Dark Light”.
How did you come up with your band name?
We choose our name using the initials “B” and “H” in memory of our friend Hervé Boucher who died in sad circumstances when he was very young. We would like to pay homage to him and to keep thinking about him when we play music. His disappearance is probably a source of inspiration for the dark side of some of our lyrics…!
What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?
We come from France. Metal scene is not very well considered in this country! In fact, there are many very good bands but Heavy Metal stays an underground scene (most of the part, of course…)! Most of people here are attracted by big festivals where they can see all their favourite bands at one time, but it’s more difficult with smaller concerts.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
In the past, we took part in one French Heavy Metal compilation and one tribute album to a French speed metal band called “Killers” and we have released 3 EP’s:
Our first one was “Did You Hear It? After, we put out “The 1st Door” and “T.I.M.E.”!
Then we released our 1st album “The Choice”. This is the first part of the story told in “Dark Light “, our new album. It’s a story about a guy, schizophrenic, who’s watching for his past, looking for the reason why he is killing insane people! Listen to the new album, you’ll discover why…! 😉
“Dark Light” will be released on May 17th around the world via German label “Pure Steel Publishing”.
We were lucky to have with us Blaze Bayley the ex-singer of Iron Maiden. He participates in a duet with Alex on one of our songs ‘Walking Close To Me’.
We also have a second special guest, Andy Kuntz, the singer of Vanden Plas, who was kind enough to sing on an acoustic version of a love song ‘Miles Away’!
We worked very hard to propose to our fans a product of quality concerning the sound as well as the inside artwork.
We are very proud of what we are going to propose and can’t wait to share it with you.
Who have been your greatest influences?
For me, it’s Iron Maiden. I love Harry’s bass playing, all their compositions, their shows and the way they are. We are all fans of Maiden, Judas Priest, Helloween, Saxon, Dio…! For some of us, Pantera and many more…!
What first got you into music?
My parents love music, especially my father who is a fan of classic music and they gave me the taste for it. When I was a teenager, I had a friend who was listening to heavy metal bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest etc. And I loved it as soon as I heard the first notes!
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
We have already played with Blaze Bayley who is one of our very special guests on the new album and Paul Di’Anno. It should be logical now for us to work with Bruce Dickinson, don’t you think? 😉
If we could work with Iron Maiden, I would be the happiest bass player in the world… Who knows?
And personally, I would love to collaborate with Accept to!
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Perhaps Wacken Open Air Festival, because for me it’s one of the most important Metal Festivals. It’s like a symbol of this kind of music!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
A pair of socks! 😉
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Thank you very much for your support and for believing in the BLACK HORIZON music.
Be a little patient, our album release is on May 17th with “Pure Steel Publishing” and you will be able to find it everywhere, to listen to us on all the musical platforms.
But the main thing is that you stay all faithful as usual.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
I think Bon Scott because he died young and I really think that he could have done great things with AC/DC!
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
What I like most is when I feel that I share emotions with the audience and the band during concerts.
What is annoying me the most is to have lots of ideas for new songs at night and not to remember them when I wake up! ;-(
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
You ask me to think like a business man… that I’m not!! I really don’t know what to do to make it work better but I’m sure that the music industry is following a bad way to encourage creativity by always promoting main stream productions and not simply good musical taste… Which is not objective, I admit but I think you know what I mean, you always hear the same kind of music on radio (at least, this is it in France).
So, perhaps establishing parity on funds allocated on different kinds of music… When it’s not private funds… but it’s nearly always private funds designed to make money…Mmmm! Ok, next question! 😉
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
It’s a very difficult question…
I love albums like “Piece Of Mind” from Iron Maiden, or “Dark Ride” from Helloween, or “Resurrection” from Rob Halford!
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or downloads?
I love vinyl because of the artwork. Pictures are very important for most metal bands!
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
For me, one of our best gigs was during the race of the 24 hours of Spa Francorchamps (Belgium). It was one of our biggest ever and we played one hour and a half in front of bikers. I’m fond of motorbikes since ever, so to associate two of my passions at the same time was really amazing!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I would be a race motorcycle pilot…!
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Dan Simmons (The writer of “Hyperion”), The Dalai Lama, Steve Harris, Rob Halford and Tobias Sammet 🙂
What’s next for the band?
We release our album “Dark Light” on May 17th via Pure Steel Publishing.
We prepare our tour. Most of the dates will be programmed from September.
We are working on 2 videos and on new songs also… Keep in touch!

Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Santiago, Chile Thrash/Death/Punk Metal band Nuclear Huge thanks to them for taking part!
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hey, thanks for this interview. My name is Francisco Haussmann, I play guitars in Nuclear. To make the long story short, Nuclear was born from the ashes of another band called Escoria back in 2003. After a few line-up changes and 5 albums in the bag, the band is writing music for the 6th album. In 2014 we got signed by Candlelight Records, UK (now Spinefarm Records/Universal Music) and we released one album under that label.
How did you come up with your band name?
To be honest, I don’t recall exactly how, but we did want to have a powerful name representing our music and live performances. We thought of the nuclear power and how uncontrollable and potentially dangerous is.
What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?
Chile, South America. I’d say metal scene here is like any other. You can find an excellent feedback and support for foreign acts but not that much for local bands. I think it is constantly growing for the better though. People understand the importance of the local scene and how difficult it is for a band to build a fan base. Our geography does not help much either as it becomes pretty difficult for bands to visit other countries in South America and vice versa (quite the opposite as Europe for instance).
What is your latest release (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Our latest album is called “Formula For Anarchy” from 2015. However, we released a single in 2016 called “Libertad Condicionada”. It is a cover song from Chilean punk rock band.
Who have been your greatest influences?
There are too many to write, but I’d say Old School Thrash and Death metal were the first influences we had. Sepultura, Kreator, Dismember, Benediction, Entombed, Slayer, Exodus, Unleashed. In time, we have been widening our taste of music and a lot of Punk, Hardcore and Grindcore have given us pretty rad ideas for our music.
What first got you into music?
I’d say something happened when I first watched Live Corruption VHS from Napalm Death back in the day. It was so intense, so brutal and I instantly knew that I wanted to have a band. I was perhaps 12 years old and did not have any instruments at home so I asked some friends to lend me theirs and that’s how it started.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
I would love to have LG Petrov or Alex Camargo from Krisiun singing one of our songs. Both are big influences on Nuclear’s work and how we see metal music nowadays.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
For some reason, I have always wanted to play Bloodstock Festival in UK. I think that festival has a really good vibe and the line-ups over the years have been brutal AF!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
We’ve received a lot of gifts from fans and nothing really weird to be honest. We’ve got flags, CDs, tees, beers, etc. We did receive a very cool gift once. It was a hand-painted very detailed and dedicated portrait of us as a band. We have it in our rehearsal room.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Many thanks for these years of constant support. Underground music is difficult in every sense of the word and it would be ever more difficult if we hadn’t got our fans supporting us at every show. We are lucky to have a very strong and loyal fanbase backing us up from many countries around the world.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
That’s a tough one. I don’t know about rock star but I’d say Chuck Schuldiner. He was one of a kind and he left us way too early.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I rarely think of this. I enjoy pretty much everything about being a musician. Playing music gives you something only musicians know how to describe it. Those goosebumps you get when you play live or when you finish a new song, It’s something unique. I don’t think I hate anything about this. Maybe the lack of support between bands or the constant hatred in social media.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I don’t think there’s commitment from labels towards new bands. I understand that this is a business but it looks like A&Rs are not getting out as much as they are supposed to. There are tons of bands out there that don’t stand a chance. I believe it is very short-term thinking if you consider that many of the big bands are about to finish their careers.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Benediction – “Subconscious Terror”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
I collect vinyl. I love the way they sound and everything about the package.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
That’s a really tough one. We’ve had many memorable gigs in the past!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I am actually also a Chemical Engineer, so I’d say that I would be working full time as one.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
My band. Besides being band mates, we are also best friends and I believe that’s why we have stayed strong as long as we have. You can have a discussion or fight from time to time but in the end, everything comes back to normal and keep having a good time. This might sound as a cliché, but metal music is not about money and if you’re not making tons of it, what’s the point of staying together if you don’t remain friends and have a good time?
What’s next for the band?
We are right in the middle of a new album recording. As soon as we finish it, we will start touring everywhere we can to support it. Stay tuned for upcoming news!

Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with West Midlands based Rock/Metal band Sister Shotgun. Huge thanks to them for taking part!
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is Niall Wills, I play guitar and scream for Sister Shotgun. The band started due to a house party I had in Kidderminster, England. I had been studying music technology in college and befriended people studying music tech/music performance, I filled a tiny one bedroom house with about 50 to 60 teenage musicians. Chloe (vocalist), being one of those people had invited some of her friends along and they had noticed my guitars all piled up in the corner of the room. They had played in various Blues Rock/Hair Metal style bands and wanted to get a new band together, therefore I joined them in the making of a band starting with a bunch of covers that would later become Sister Shotgun. During this time Chloe was singing for a Pop Punk band and a wedding band and solo projects, we had the core members but no vocalist. We found a male singer we were digging and he was prepared to join but ended up getting to the finals of the TV competition “The Voice” so that fell through. Chloe ended up leaving her Pop Punk project and convinced us she should join as she was the best vocalist in the area. We picked her up and it worked so she began our journey. It took us a while to grasp those vital members which brings us to the present day with the best line up yet. These guys have the best creative minds I know.
How did you come up with your band name?
Chloe came up with the band name. She had a working title of a project called Sister Shotgun as a sort of alter ego character she had created. I believe she took the phrase from Billy Idol’s ‘White Wedding’ however it wouldn’t influence the bands styling! We dug the simplicity of the name and the clash of words; the innocence of the word Sister and the aggressiveness of the word Shotgun, we tried to think of others but it was the easiest and catchiest name.
What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?
We are from England, United Kingdom There is so much Metal in this country it’s kind of just sewn into our genes, however the metal scene varies. a lot of bands have gravitated toward the American Rock sound with Country/Blues tones to their music so the Metal scene has shrunk a little however, the ones that have stuck around and grown are some of the most creative Metal bands I’ve heard in a while.
What is your latest release (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Our latest single is ‘Sacred Heart’ and our album “Fragments” was released on April 19th.
Who have been your greatest influences?
This is where it gets harder, We are five different people with different tastes and influences so we gather them together and we influence each other! Some that are mutual are Killswitch Engage and Bullet For My Valentine, then personally it goes from My Chemical Romance and Mötley Crüe to Korn and Machine head for all our own reasons.
What first got you into music?
I grew up with a father who was very into his music, he had guitars and he had drums often in the living room so when I’d stay over I couldn’t help myself but to strum the strings on every guitar every time I walked past and the excitement around music from him was built inside me. I was very much into art as a kid so it was easily transferred into music.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
All in all someone like Rob Zombie or Johnny Rotten would be incredible and not a generic collab but I’d absolutely love to pick someone a bit off the wall, throw a spanner in the works and turn some heads so I think I’d shove someone like Morrissey on a Metal track and with his lyrical content that would be interesting.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
The obvious answer being Download Festival, Hellfest, Wacken! However, also Shiprocked!, a cruise and a massive beach party with metal! That beats a muddy festival easy plus they have some really cool bands play!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
We haven’t really been given anything weird as far as I know, We’ve had fans bake cakes and cupcakes for us.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
With all the obstacles that have been in our path over the past so many years as a band, you the fans are what kept us fighting and kept us writing and kept us on the road and this album is for you. The ones that listen, that scream back in our faces, those familiar faces we see at shows far from their own homes, you travel the distance for us and well go the distance for you, thank you!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
I’m gonna say Kurt Cobain or Dimebag Darrell so I could at least see Nirvana or Pantera as they’re some of my favourite bands that I never got to see.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Everything involving the creative side, just making music is an amazing experience starting from a small riff or progression then you build it, play it, perform it, record it and it becomes its own beast kind of like raising a child and then having fans sing it back to you and the sound and feeling I get of loud live guitars fills my soul with excitement and energy!
I hate the amount of rip off merchants and egotistical personalities that are flying around. Everyone wants to overcharge or take all your money for services and try not to pay you or pay you naff all for maximum effort like we did in the beginning. It took a lot of time, effort and money to play shows for free and watch a promoter walk away with all the money in their fancy cars. I dislike the egos from some musicians they think the world owes them something because they can sing or play guitar like everybody else and this happens with small time bands too.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
To turn back the clock back to 80’s/90’s when the industry actually signed bands and put money into them to progress them and truly scouted talent rather than how many likes do they have on Facebook? Or how much money do they have to buy onto this tour? Or how popular of a person is the lead singer, so in essence Social Media. I’d wipe that out of existence and let the live shows and the music do the talking… not the numbers!
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“The Poison” by Bullet For My Valentine. Their riffs where unique and songs where so creative and the guitar playing was by far their best. It was aggressive, melodic, catchy as hell and something new out of Metal rather than the ‘let’s copy Metallica’ route!
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Vinyl, especially the old ones, as it’s all analog and pure but it’s mainly because when you purchase it’s a real physical thing. That’s what I don’t like about downloads, you don’t get a nice big piece of artwork with a bunch of lyrics that you can read and with CD’s the lyrics are crammed in and you can barely read it. You can hang a vinyl on your wall you have the art and a physical thing for your money!
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
There have been quite a few lately down to the hype the crowd have given us singing at the top of their lungs. I loved playing a festival called FortFest because we pulled out all the stops. We had roadies moving our stuff, we brought in some fire performers that breathed fire and used angle grinders on stage; that was our coolest gig. It wasn’t the liveliest crowd as it was a brand new festival and we were very fresh as a band back then but it was fun watching the lighting guy fear for his life as he was showered in metal shards!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I’d more than likely have chosen a career being a tattoo artist. I’ve always loved art and I could draw a car and its engine parts before I could even write my own name properly and I had a huge interest in tattoo artistry in my school days but music just took over!
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
I’d have to have an outrageous dinner party full of characters so I’d probably pick Ozzy Osbourne, David lee Roth, Devin Townsend, Abbath and someone like Donald Trump. That would be one entertaining night, it would be chaos, exactly how a dinner party should be.
What’s next for the band?
We’re looking at a “Fragments” headline tour followed by some festival dates, some high profiles support slots and a bunch of other fun stuff we’ve got planned… the fun doesn’t stop at album release!

Fun fact; whilst recording the album there was an offer on for Jaffa cakes a triple pack for a pound I believe and Benji (guitarist) bought a pack a day (for 7 days) he’s dangerously addicted to jaffas, a bit of a ‘jaffajunky’, on that note it is a cake disguised as a biscuit it’s a clever ploy it appeals to both markets but were not fooled it’s a cake.

Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Stevenage, UK Melodic/Death/Thrash Metal band Dorylus. Huge thanks to them for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
I’m Joe I’m the lead vocalist and guitarist for UK Metal band Dorylus.
We formed in 2015 with original members; Bassist Tom Oliver, Guitarist Craig Carmichael and Drummer Mitch Cartwright after our previous bands had gone their separate ways.
How did you come up with your band name?
So me and Tom where at a pub talking about potential band names and he had suggested that insects had really cool sounding names but Cicada, while sounding like an awesome band name, the bug itself is a bit dull. So in true metal fashion we hit up Google for a list of the most dangerous insects in the world and “Dorylus” was number 4 on the list.
What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?
We are from England and based in Hertfordshire.
The Hertfordshire metal scene is one of the most incredibly supportive scenes in the country IMO. It has so many incredible bands that are really pushing the envelope of originality and keeping things interesting. If you put on a metal show in Hertfordshire it seems you’re guaranteed a good turnout, with all the regulars and bands that show up all the time to support an incredible growing scene. I thank the BOA M2TM competition going on at Club 85 in Hitchin for helping nurture such an amazing environment to make music.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
So we are currently preparing to release our Debut full length album on June 7th it’s called “Without Sin” and it’s taken the last 3 years to write and record and our first single is coming soon!
Who have been your greatest influences?
Personally my biggest influences as a musician have been Josh from Bloodshot Dawn, Chuck from Death, Randy from Lamb of God, Adam from King Leviathan and Ola England from Feared and the Haunted.
What first got you into music?
As basic as it sounds I remember hanging out with a friend when I was about 12 he’d brought round Metallica’s ‘Black’ album and the minute he put it on the aggression and raw feeling that I had never been able to understand when I’d heard metal before suddenly started to make sense I couldn’t not bang my head. my brother overheard us rocking out to it and the next day he dumped a bunch of CDs in my hands which included the likes of Machine Head, Soil and Slipknot as well as some classics like AC/DC and Iron Maiden. From then on I knew music was all I wanted in my life.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
There are so many incredible bands in my local scene right now and to be honest I’d love to do something with every single one of them. I feel like I’d enjoy working with friends a whole lot given the opportunity. So… any bands in my local scene that would like to collaborate HIT ME UP haha!
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
100% it would have to be Bloodstock Open Air.
Not just because it’s an awesome festival but because of the work it does for the growing Underground Metal community. It has an entire stage that runs all weekend dedicated to what’s happening in the underground. It’s such a good thing to be involved with and it would be and absolute pleasure to be up on one of those stages one day!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Damn I wish I had something interesting to say for this… but honestly we don’t get gifts from fans. Although someone did stick a dildo on my guitar while I was playing once… but I think it was the bands dildo (long story) anyways so I don’t think that counts.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
WE BLOODY LOVE YOU CRAZY BUNCH OF NUTTERS!!! …(also the album comes out June 7th).
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
There are too many to choose from but I’d probably say Chuck (Schuldiner). I’d love to have another Death album and to see where he would have taken his musical journey. Death have been a band that has had a vibe across all of the albums that made it still feel like the same band while maturing so much musically it’s why they have been a huge influence on how I approach writing music.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
It’s a release or more like it’s real. While I’m on the road I feel more like myself than when I’m at work or at home. The only thing I hate is that I can’t do it 24/7… the wages suck a bit as well.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Actually nothing really! The music industry is fairer than it has ever been for Metal. It’s no longer about ‘right time, right place’. It’s no longer a game of luck. You can’t be lazy and get lucky, you can’t just spend money and you can’t be in it for the money because there isn’t any. The only people who are left playing Metal are the ones with the true unbridled passion for it, the people doing it because they love it and it’s making music better every day.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Paean Heretica” by King Leviathan. I’d been following this band for a couple years with their first 3 EPs playing on repeat almost constantly and once they released this album it changed my ideas of what I could accomplish musically.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
First off, anything that has people listening to music. To be honest I wish I was old enough to have been around in the tape trading days.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
That’s a pretty big toss up we’ve had so many good shows and shared the stage with so many incredible bands it’s hard to think.
I think I’d have to go with London 2016 M2TM Grand Final. While we didn’t go through and we definitely have played better since the atmosphere in that room was amazing. Playing alongside some of our best friend’s in Gevaudan, Slave Steel, Dead Before Mourning and Bearfist, to a packed room of people, was just one of my favourite experiences.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Being bored as hell at my day job… nah I’d probably have tried my hand at art or acting I like being creative and I love attention.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Only 5!!!
Matt Berry, Ian Mckellen, Morgan Freeman, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mike Tyson.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is Matthew Marotti, lead guitarist from As I Destruct. Our old band was called Quaero Verum. No one knew how to say it, let alone spell it. So we decided a makeover was in order.
How did you come up with your band name?
Luke liked it and really pushed for it. Also anyone familiar with “Threat Signal” knows that the song kicks major arse!
What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?
We are from Australia. The metal scene here is diverse, with a lot of young hungry bands really up for the task. The competitive nature and drive to bring metal heads together resonates throughout our lovely, ageing population.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Our latest album is called “From Fear to Oblivion”. We have so far released two singles from the album. The tracks are ‘Redemption’ and ‘A Question of Faith’.
‘A Question of Faith’ has its very own film clip, done by the people at Against the Grain Studios. They did a fantastic job. We highly recommend that you go and check the video out on YouTube. They didn’t even pay me to say that!

Who have been your greatest influences?
Mine personally that have shaped the sound for this particular record is Nevermore, Hypocrisy, Old Man’s Child and my dad’s awesome record collection. We are talking growing up on the original vinyl’s of Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Dio. That was until my younger brother took all the records out of the sleeves and smooshed them against our old tiled floors! I hate to imagine how much they would be worth today.
What first got you into music?
Growing up in my old house I was always surrounded by music. During the day, my Mum would play stuff from Taylor Dayne, Madonna and Cher while my Dad at night would blast stuff from Richie Blackmore, Ronnie James Dio and Tony Iommi.
I did enjoy Dad’s taste in music a little more. Though Mum’s selection would have helped me more with the ladies…
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
If I didn’t say Jeff Loomis I probably would be lying. The guy’s a total freak.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Download Festival. It is the only heavy metal festival that took a chance on Australia when no one else would, post-Soundwave. It would be a dream to play in front of a big crowd in my hometown.
I guess a girl can dream…
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
My mates bring their partners to shows, so their patience of sitting through our show might be the biggest gift of all? Right?
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Thanks for your support. You don’t realise that every time someone tells me the album is awesome what that does for me. Nothing beats it. It’s a surreal feeling. Honest to God, feel these nipples!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
I’d probably die trying to decide between Chuck Schuldiner and Ronnie James Dio.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Writing songs is something that I enjoy the most. Dealing with my crippling fear of failure and self-doubt makes the first point a little more/less enjoyable.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I would create a grant for musicians called Matthew Marotti. That person would receive a headline show at the Download Festival plus $1 million spending money. Australian dollars, not Monopoly because that game sucks and I already owe people money!
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Defiance of Existence” from Old Man’s Child. That album gets me.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
I love collecting CDs. Currently I am at approximately 500 CDs. I wouldn’t say they are like my kids because I am not sure my children will bring me that much happiness.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Playing at HQ in Adelaide. Our friends, family and our amazing fans came in full support and gave us a show. I hope we returned the favour lml lml.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Professional wrestling. Not even kidding. I saw The Undertaker as a kid and thought he was the coolest thing ever. Still do.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Five of my best mates, provided it’s an open bar. You’re welcome lads.
What’s next for the band?
Touring, writing and not splitting up. We keep this train going now for as long as humanly possible.

Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Scranton, Pennsylvania Thrash/Groove Metal band Threatpoint. Huge thanks to them for taking part!
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hey, I’m Chris James; I’m the singer of Threatpoint and also play guitar, writing and recording but just not live. Threatpoint has been around since March 2012. Our sound is a mix of many influences, Hard Rock, Power Metal, a lil Progressive stuff, Classic Metal and a big chunk of us is Thrash! We are all big Thrash Metal fans since we were young.
How did you come up with your band name?
Threatpoint band name? You’re the first interview that ever asked us this. Our original name was Sixfist but changed for reasons of it sounding like porn …Chris came up with the word “Threat” like getting in someone’s face not necessarily in a bad way. And we needed to expand on it and CJ said “Point” basically being a person or place or event. So Threatpoint was born. We look at it as we will get in your face point blank with our mission!
What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?
We are from Scranton, Pennsylvania USA. The metal scene in my view is there are good solid pockets of it depending where you go. Sure there are metal heads everywhere but when you play out some towns or cities definitely do better than others.
What is your latest release (Album, EP, Single, Video?)
“Salvation” is our brand new album. Just released it Feb 22nd this year. Our single is out as a lyric video for the track ‘Save Your Apologies For God’.

My greatest influences are God and my mother. Musically speaking; The Doors, Iron Maiden, Testament, Overkill, Savatage, Blondie, The Bee Gees and the list rolls on.

Growing up Mom always played records all types of music. I was never much into TV but then Headbangers Ball came along… man those were the days the 80’s!!!
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Testament!
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Wacken… it’s the ultimate metal festival!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Cookies…not weird but they were awesome!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Writing/Recording and playing new places and meeting new people. I hate the lies, empty promises and being screwed financially!

It would be nice if people truly listened to new bands and gave them a shot.

Testament – “The Gathering”
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Cassettes because you can beat them up pretty good and now downloads because I can buy something on iTunes n listen to it immediately and don’t have cases and cases of things to carry!
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Every gig is equally important when there are people waiting for you. We always give 100%.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I’m doing it, a truck driver.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
My Wife and my band guys.
What’s next for the band?
We just suffered a huge blow from an accident, trying to regroup and try to get a new tour vehicle!

Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with French Thrash Metal band Warfaith. Huge thanks to them for taking part!
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Already, Warfaith is five friends who like to have a good time playing Thrash Metal. There’s only one way to work: to laugh one’s head off. The band was founded in 2012 with 4 of its 5 actual members.
How did you come up with your band name?
At first, it was ‘Warfare’ but connotations with a modest video game made us change our name 😉 .There’s no special meaning. The band was founded before us, with other members, we just tried to keep almost the same name.
What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?
We come from France, the homeland of wine, baguette and snails. The scene in France is poorly represented as far as Thrash is concerned, so we play what we like and how we want it.
What is your latest release (Album, EP, Single, Video)?
Our latest release is our new EP “Pint Of Pils”, a concentrate of funny mood, beer and its effect & cats and zombies.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Inspiration is quite varied because we listen to many different styles of music that can lead to good ideas when we are together. In general, we have a base of composition and each of us brings back his ideas and his personal touch while keeping fast music with powerful and heavy riffs. One of the advantages of working this way is that we can all express ourselves. Warfaith is what it is due to each one of us.
What first got you into music?
That’s a good question…. Beer?
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Municipal Waste, Slayer, Kreator, and for our drummer, Sepultura.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Hellfest, why not? Because it’s in France, there are always great bands and the atmosphere is crazy.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
No gift from a fan, sorry, except a beer but it’s not a strange gift 😉
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Thrash, beer and cats (they will dominate the world one day!)
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Dimebag Darrell with no hesitation!
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
We don’t take ourselves seriously and that’s the more important point, so we hate the opposite, mannequin clips and Auto-Tune.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Auto-Tune, and orange juice at a festival.

Justin Bieber – Under the Mistletoe

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
The Rising Fest at Dijon. The best organization we have seen to date.

Our jobs, we do them as well as music by the way.

4 cats and the Pope.
What’s next for the band?
Promotion of our EP, drinking beers and maybe a festival.

EMQ’s with GRIEF COLLECTOR

Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Minnesota Doom metallers Grief Collector. Huge thanks to them for taking part!
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
This is Brad Miller, And I am the drummer. Grief Collector was formed in the Fall of 2017 by myself and guitarist, Matt Johnson. We wrote the material and recorded the music in the summer of 2018. Once Robert (Lowe, ex Candlemass & Solitude Aeturnus) joined, we recorded his vocals in January of 2019.
How did you come up with your band name?
The name Grief Collector actually comes from the lyrics of a Candlemass song.
What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?
We are from Minnesota, USA. The Doom Metal scene here is pretty amazing actually. A lot of really talented bands out there.
What is your latest release (Album, EP, Single, Video)
We just released our first album called “From Dissension To Avowal” on April 1st
Who have been your greatest influences?
I’m really influenced by Swedish bands like Katatonia, Candlemass and most recently, Ghost. But I grew up listening to bands like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden.
What first got you into music?
In all honesty, seeing the inside cover of “Kiss Alive II” made me wanna become a drummer. Visually stunning. And the raw energy that album had at the time.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
For me it would definitely be Katatonia, hands down.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
I think we are really big on playing The Maryland Doom Fest.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Not really a gift, but one time I was asked to sign a McDonald’s receipt. Apparently the guy didn’t have anything else to write on. LOL.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Go out and support these bands that you love so much. Every city should have a thriving music scene. And that’s the only way to achieve that.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
For me it would definitely be Layne Staley from Alice In Chains. His lyrics were so powerful and painful.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I absolutely love the writing process. Being able to create something from scratch and see it come alive. I definitely don’t like the arrogance and cockiness that the music industry can spawn.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I think the music industry lacks originality and it seems like everything is mass produced and has really lost the spontaneity it used to have. I like not knowing what an artist might do live. It’s exciting!
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Without a doubt, Katatonia “Night Is The New Day”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
I’m a big Vinyl and CD fan personally. I like to be able to see the art and read the lyrics. That’s always been a big part of the excitement of getting a new release from a band for me.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
I put on a local Doom/ Sludge Showcase here in Minneapolis every year called The Minneapolis Menagerie. Those are always a great time.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I love food and cooking, so I would probably be in the culinary arts.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
I’m a sucker for 80’s metal and the higher ranged vocalists. So I would probably invite Rob Halford, Geoff Tate, Bruce Dickinson, Ray Alder and King Diamond.
What’s next for the band?
We are looking to hit the road this summer and fall. Then work on the follow up album sometime in 2020.
