Maybe I am becoming repetitive with my speech, similar to what some bands do with their music, considering it is almost impossible to offer something completely new in Heavy Metal. Of course, about my speech, it is more a matter of laziness to find good words to express myself (Please boss, don’t fire me!) (Don’t worry Victor, you’re safe – Rick). Ok, what I am trying to say is that I don’t expect anything new from bands, but there are two things that still intrigue me when brutal music is the subject. Firstly, if you can offer complex and heavy music, but at the same time, make it simple and catchy, you will have my attention. Secondly, it doesn’t matter if what you play has already been played by tons of bands before, but if you can still put anger (in the very good meaning of the word) and passion into the music, then you will also have my attention. With this explanation, we can now talk about this album and review!

As you may imagine, the Brazilian Thrash Metal band Válvera does, exactly, the two things I mentioned above, and they go further. Their music is brutal, like good Thrash Metal should be, but it is not the same old Thrash Metal that other bands repeat constantly. It is something full of heaviness, very well thought out with catchy riffs, amazing song structures and good melodies too. As for the anger, well that probably comes from all the subjects covered in the tracks. This is easy to explain because the lyrics focus on many disgraces that human beings have suffered with through the years. Do you want one example? Well, ‘Glow of Death’ is about the famous case of contamination by Cesium-137, which happened in Brazil in 1987. At that time, some people tried to sell equipment found in the garbage, but it had all been in contact with a machine used for radioactive therapy. They had no idea what they were dealing with or selling, and it caused the death of hundreds of people.

Musically, I can hear a very mature band, focused on cadence, which offers good value to the riffs. Nothing is extremely fast but it’s far from being slow. Title track ‘Cycle of Disaster’ contains a wall of heaviness from guitarists Glauber Barreto and Rodrigo Torres and it is possible to understand that the band don’t want to keep repetitive structures in their music. You can hear many variations here and it brilliantly keeps the listeners attention throughout the album. Glauber also explores some melodies with his vocals on the excellent ‘The Damn Colony’, which showcases a catchier kind of music without losing its powerful sonority. Even the solo is played differently with the usual ‘Kerry King style of playing’ making way for something much more melodic and well-structured!

If Gabriel Prado has already showed sonority on his bass during the opening song ‘Nothing Left To Burn’ and drummer Leandro Peixoto shows his technique on ‘Glow Of Death’, then in ‘All Systems Fall’ both appear stronger than ever and do a magnificent job together. Maybe it is not the album’s best song but it actually feels like all the members have put their identity into the composition and if that isn’t the case then the person who wrote it has thought really closely about the feelings of their bandmates

‘Fight For Your Life’ has a more positive spirit and makes you feel stronger after listening to all the struggles and disgraces mentioned by the band. This song also shows more melodies and solos inspired by classic heavy metal bands and it opens space for the last song, the furious ‘Bringer Of Evil’ with its fast cadence. It is a perfect song choice to finish this great album.

I confess that I’ve never heard anything from Válvera before. Maybe I heard someone talking about them and it was interesting try to understand what they want to play. The first thing that popped into my head was that the band knew exactly what they wanted to achieve with this record. This is a natural step for a band releasing their third album after 10 years of existence and many tours but it is not just a case of being a mature band, I feel like they have focused on getting a good producer, not just to have good arrangements or recording sound, but who seems to have travelled deep into the band’s soul to extract their best compositions and help them to reach this amazing result.

Once again, I don’t know if that was what really happened with the relationship between Válvera and their producer Rogério Wecko, but I can assure that the final result is incredible. “Cycle Of Disaster” shows a professional band that is ready to go much further in their career.

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with São Paulo, Brazil based Metal band The Damnnation. Huge thanks to guitarist/vocalist Renata Petrelli for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hello there! My Name is Renata Petrelli and I play guitar and sing (I’m new on that) in the band!

Well, the band started last year in February immediately when I left the previous band, lol. Our First rehearsal was in May 18th; same day I watched an awesome concert of the Swedish band Graveyard, btw. We are 3-piece band: guitar, bass and drums from São Paulo (state). We have a big mix of influences on our music, so I can’t tell you what kind of genre we play. It is better you listen to it and conclude for yourself 😉.

How did you come up with your band name?

I was taking a shower. No kidding! Hahaha I was thinking that I wanted a name that sounded actual for the reality our country is living right now. So I though “Damn” and then, “Nation”. I made it as one word and put “The” before the word just to not bring us problems.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Brazil, São Paulo. The scene here is growing, getting stronger. More female bands are starting and the underground scene looks more united.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We just released a single 3 weeks ago, ‘Apocalypse’, available in all streaming services, youtube, etc.

Who have been your greatest influences?

As a guitarist: Jerry Cantrell, Charlie Starr, Tony Iommi, Mark Knopfler, Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson, James Hetfield, Kai Hansen, Mille Petrozza, Dave Mustaine. Haha

As a “singer”: Chuck Billy, James Hetfield, Chris Cornell, Jim Morrison.

What first got you into music?

Mom. Mom is into rock n’ roll music, so I have been listening to it since a child, like Dire Straits, Bon Jovi, Queen, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, The Mamas and the Papas, Creedence and so on… when I was 6. I was already listening to The Offspring and Nirvana when I was 8 years old. Proper metal came into my life when I was about 11 or 12 years old.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

There are some if I may dream would be Testament, Gamma Ray, Blackberry Smoke, Foo Fighters, Lynyrd Skynyrd.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Metal Days, Wacken Open Air, 70000 tons of metal because of the vibe on these festivals.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Uhh… I prefer to not tell.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

First of all, thank you for all the support. It isn’t easy to start a new band over again haha BUT if it is something that you want for your life, to be a musician, doing this for passion. From all reasons, this one must be the most important. Once you do it for passion, all the responsibilities that come from it, you will do it by pleasure, because each step done is a step conquered and it is priceless. Remember: the best thing is the journey, not the end of line.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Chris Cornell

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I like to travel, to know other cultures. I hate that everything is too fast.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Treat female bands with equality not inferior. And that, music industry and public should give more chance for new bands to show their potential.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Megadeth – “Cryptic Writings”

Vinyl

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Lima Metal Fest, another one being an opening act for Exodus, and all the gigs in Netherlands. I just loved it.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I’m still working as a publicist… so probably I would do that, or Law.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Any kind of people? Hahaha Probably I would invite people that betrayed me somehow, just to see face to face and see how embarrassing it was for those people. Hahaha kidding! But I would invite some handsome guys from some tv series and bands. hahaha

What’s next for the band?

2 new videos, EP release, 2021: gigs and record our first full length album 😊

“We Are The First Thunder Metal Band”. With these words, I started on my journey to understand and review “Cosmos Tree” the debut album from Guardian Of Lightning, an amazing 3-piece band from São Paulo, Brazil. First, I was curious as to what exactly this unknown genre (at least for me) was, but after listening to their album several times, I guess I could understand it. Nevertheless, it is especially important to highlight that despite what they call themselves, their music is what comes first, and their music is very impressive.

What I could extract from the meaning of Thunder Metal on hearing Guardian Of Lightning for the first time is the following. Firstly, their lyrics and concept are connected to the power that comes from nature in a way to recover our energies and soul. All the lyrics have positive messages, but nothing is esoteric, and it is healthy, like a mantra connecting music and nature. The second thing that could be related to Thunder Metal is the loudness that comes from their instruments which are heavy and powerful like thunder. I guess this comes to mind due to their similarities with Motörhead and Manowar, mostly in the arrangements, and especially the vocals that really remind me of Lemmy Kilmister.

The sonority itself gives value to heavy guitars guiding the songs rhythmically. The incredible percussion of ‘Lord Drum’ increases the aggression where the speed is filled by strong hits on his drum kit and amazing tempo changes. The most interesting aspect of their music is that the bass does all leads and solos, obviously something that we are used to hearing from guitars. Therefore, the bass of ‘Iron King’ is the main instrument throughout the record and I feel that it makes the guitar of his father ‘Marco Fino’ better to follow. This is pure and heavy Rock n’ Roll and I mean a VERY HEAVY Rock n’ Roll but It is also Heavy Metal. However, I can’t think of any style that relates to Guardian Of Lightning other than when I mentioned Motörhead? The similarities between them are very apparent. Something that is not only Metal but also much heavier than just Rock n’ Roll.

There are more elements that make “Cosmos Tree” brilliant. Mantras you hear in the ‘Intro’ before the title track ‘Cosmos Tree’ kicks the album off show everything that the band are trying to achieve. This song also has a guitar sound that reminds me somewhat of the sounds of nature. ‘Aligned With The Stars’ includes some rattle (maybe it is another instrument, but it reminds me a lot of a rattle) throughout the song, that fits well with the drums. I also have to mention my favorite tracks, the beautiful ‘Sound Of Thunder’ that includes touching piano in the song and the lovely and heavy ballad ‘Be Like The Moon’ that finishes the album.

Perhaps Guardian Of Lightning hasn’t brought anything new to the table, that is for you to decide, but I find it interesting how their music navigates through Rock and Heavy Metal. If you like Rock but miss the heaviness of Heavy Metal or if you like Heavy Metal and miss the simplicity of good Rock n’ Roll then “Cosmos Tree” is the perfect album for you. Of course, fans of good and well-played bass are going to love this amazing band.

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with São Paulo, Brazil based Metal band Sacramentia Huge thanks to vocalist Renan Bezan for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

I’m Renan, the singer. The band’s line up is André Guimarães and Guilherme Mendes on guitars, Guilherme Melo (bass), Leonardo Michelazzo (drums) and myself on vocals. We live in São João da Boa Vista, in the interior of the state of São Paulo. The history of the band began in a moment of musical maturity and transition between members of other groups that together, seek to evolve technically, to make a sound that makes the public restless in the presentations.

How did you come up with your band name?

The name Sacramentia comes from the combination of the words “SACRA” (from Sacred) and “DEMENTIA”.

We were looking for a name that sounded strong and, at the same time, had something to do with this thing, often toxic to religious hysteria and the dogmas created by the men who lead these institutions.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Brazil, in a small town called São João da Boa Vista, in the state of São Paulo. The rock scene here is small. We have a few bands; most of them play only covers.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our first album was released this year, called “Prophecies of Plague”

Who have been your greatest influences?

To elaborate my vocals, I was inspired by two vocalists from some of my favourite bands. Death’s Chuck Schuldiner, specifically, by the style he adopted on the album “The Sound of Perseverance”, the band’s last release. The second influence is Attilla Csihar, the second singer of Mayhem

What first got you into music?

Basically, my father. When I was a child, I spent weekends with him and since those days, I became aware of the classic bands, like Van Halen, Iron Maiden, etc.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

This is a very difficult question. I think with Jupiterian, a Brazilian Doom / Sludge band, Batushka and any other band from our underground that would invite me

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Hellfest, Wacken, Inferno, Setembro Negro and others.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

We haven’t received gifts from fans yet.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I like the challenge that the creative process demands. What I hate is the lack of structure in my country, which makes a point of ignoring the production of rock and metal.

Mainly, the existence of covers bands.

What’s next for the band?

The goal is to schedule shows and work on more songs for a second album, in the future.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hello, my name is Jonathas Pereira, and I’m a guitar player! IncognoscI was created in 2012 from the ashes of the band Necropse, and our goal is always make a sound that goes back to the 90’s Death Metal bands.

We are from Rio de Janeiro/Brazil! Rio de Janeiro has a medium sized scene, with lots of good bands, underground shows, and some major bands appearing here now and then.

We have a single entitled ‘Eleven Years’, from 2015, which we also released it as videoclip to promote. Our full album, mastered by the great George Bokos (ex-Rotting Christ) is completed, and it will be released soon!

What first got you into music?

I started playing Death Metal in 2001 influenced by my friends after going in my first Death Metal concert. Also, my parents were divorcing at the time, and getting into music helped to deal with the frustration.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Obscene Extreme, one of the craziest and funniest festivals in the world!

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Renan Guimarães, I play bass for Blazing Dog. The band started in 2004, with the purpose of playing Heavy Metal in the vein of bands like Judas Priest, Manowar, Iron Maiden and other gods

How did you come up with your band name?

The name was given by the ex-vocalist and founder, Carlos Sousa. So, I have nothing to do with it (laughs)

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Brasília, the capital of Brazil. The scene is cool, with lots of bands and young kids coming to the shows

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

The DVD + CD “Age of the Beast”, released in the year of 2015. Hell, that’s quite old!

Metal as a whole genre, mainly the greatest names of it

What first got you into music?

I was thirteen years old, got into Brazilian rock bands and after that, metal. Metallica’s Kill ’Em All was the door that opened this whole new world for me

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Ghost. I’m a big fan since the beginning of the band. Cool sound, ideas, concept and looks. I love the art that they are creating.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Wacken Open Air. That’s the ultimate festival for a metalhead

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

A miniature of a motorcycle that I was riding from a pic I had on my social media. Actually, that was pretty cool.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Drop your phone and read a book. People nowadays are dumber because of the excess of useless information and social media bullshit.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

That is easy, Ronnie James Dio. The guy was a fucking blast and had a great heart also.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Live shows are always the best thing about it. Humm… maybe the whole thing before live shows are the worst part also. Soundchecks, carrying equipment, schedule problems…

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I would bring back the physical media era in music. Those were the days when it was a cool ritual listening to something new or old that you put your hands on.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

That’s difficult. I can’t do this man, hahahaha. There are so many cool things around that I think answering this is a crime. Shame on you for that question. I will answer with my favourite album of the week: Accept first album. Aggressive and melodic, beautiful ballads, what a great album!

Vinyl and CD’s. I’ve never liked cassettes. Streaming is cool for the convenience, but the sound…

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

The last one with Blazing Dog opening for Shaman (Shaman – Nagual Fly Tour in Brasília-DF, March 7th 2020), before the pandemic and the whole hell that broke loose in the world.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Man, I don’t get money from the band, so I have to work, hehehe.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

My band… I miss those guys

What’s next for the band?

Hope to release something new soon. And go back to playing live shows

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

I’m Diego, drummer of the Band. It started 15 years ago after the vocalist and a former guitarist watched a shitty band winning a contest to see which Band would be chosen to play at that year’s Porão do Rock Festival (The biggest one in the band’s city). On the next day, they gathered and started writing Device’s first song, ‘Mind Decay’. I filled in for the Band once in a concert in 2010 and joined them definitely in 2014.

How did you come up with your band name?

Our vocalist heard the story about how AC/DC came up with their name, so one time, drunk at a barbecue, he said he would came up with the name of his band in the same way. Then he looked under a broken electronic device, saw the word device and liked it, because It sounded like Deicide, but he didn’t know the meaning of that word back then. When he realized the meaning, It was already too late and decided to keep it

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Brasília, the capital of Brazil, but the scene is strong mainly in São Paulo, where all the bands from abroad come to tour, although a Lot of other places have their relevance, even with venues significantly smaller or fewer dedicated to extreme metal.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

The EP “Godless”, released at the beginning of 2018.

What first got you into music?

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Travelling, knowing other places and meeting other people. We hate the small support to extreme Heavy Metal in Brazil.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

The exaggerated attention to more popular genres, due to exclusively money issues.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Reign In Blood” from Slayer.

Fuck! Everyone has its importance. Download is more practical. But the feeling of opening a CD or vinyl and accompanying the songs reading the lyrics is amazing.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Porão do Rock festival (September 30th,2018).

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Brewing beer!

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Beto Padilha and I play drums.

The band has been active since 2014 and seeking to add something to the independent scene, collaborating with bands from other states and organizing their own events. The band’s intention is to combine the heaviness of the instruments with the aggressiveness of their vocals, playing songs with a feeling of “eye to eye”, in an incisive, simple and direct way.

DESONRA has already passed through several cities in Brazil and has plenty of energy, anger and willingness to spread its message of protest.

How did you come up with your band name?

Lies and betrayals have always caught our attention, as it is a typically human behavior. So, we thought about what was the reward of those who deceive others? Dishonor (Desonra in Portuguese).

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. The scene here is not much different from the scenes in other parts of the world. It requires a lot of work and partnerships.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our latest release is called ‘Filho da Vida’ (Son of Life).

What first got you into music?

I remember when I saw a Metallica video and there, Lars was destroying everything! That day was when I realized I wanted to be a drummer!

Wacken, it´s a dream!

Their money! hahaha. It´s a joke. Our fans are very serious, so there is no room for these things.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love playing drums and composing, so everything that is related to these things is a pleasure for me. I don’t really hate anything.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Independent bands need space to show their work. We are so caught up in the old classic bands, many fantastic new bands end up dying without showing their work.

“Chaos A.D.” – Sepultura

I still like CD’s, but the reality of streaming is here to stay.

I’m actually something else. We don’t live by music, so we need to work. I’m a video editor.

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Recife, Brazil based Death/Thrash/Heavy Metal band Pandemmy. Huge thanks to lead guitarist Pedro Valença for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hello, bangers! I’m Pedro Valença, guitarist and founding member of Pandemmy. I’ve been playing guitar since 2005 because I love to play riffs and I love the sound of distortion. I created this group after I left from my first band, called Monstera. I wanted to play not only thrash metal, but also a mix between Thrash and Death Metal. So, in 2009 Pandemmy was born.

How did you come up with your band name?

The name Pandemmy is associated with the concept of the music being spread in a pandemic way. This idea rose in 2009, but we don’t like anything about epidemics or pandemics! The style of the band transits between Death Metal and Thrash Metal, common characteristic of many Brazilian bands that appeared in years 2000.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

I’m from the Northeast of Brazil, a hot and poor region compared to the South and Southeast part of Brazil. The scene here is very rich in terms of bands, but the public is lower than other states as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais. There are many extreme Heavy Metal bands from Brazilian states in Northeast.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We released our third album, called “Subversive Need”, on March 6th . We have three albums, two EP’s, one split album, one single and one demo. In our YouTube Channel (please subscribe to it) we recorded a series of Lockdown videos because of Covid-19 crisis.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Calling in the name of the band, we have been common influences like Carcass, Kreator, Death and Sepultura. Particularly, I love a lot of bands in several subgenres of Heavy Metal.

What first got you into music?

I enjoyed it when I was a child. But in my teenage years, the interest in music exploded when I heard Iron Maiden for the first time. It was my passport for the music.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

If I had to choose one musician, it would be Max Cavalera. We like to collaborate with bands from the underground scene too. We trade information about musical production, producers, social media, etc.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

It’s a hard question because the European summer festivals are like a dream to any heavy metal band. Wacken Open Air is a natural answer. We would also like to play on Rock Hard Fest, in Germany.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

We are not so famous to receive weird gifts.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Now? Stay at home and wait for a medicine to resolve the Corona Virus and the global crisis. Stay home, stay Metal!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Andre Matos (Shaman, Angra, Symfonia, Viper, Andre Matos). It’s very sad to think about his death.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Playing our music in new places for new people. Creating music is a necessity that we all feel. The bad part is certainly the human part, egos, disunion.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

The music industry is a pure reflex of the system that we live. Here in Brazil, I believe that Heavy Metal music could be closer with public departments of culture to spread the Heavy Metal culture.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

It would be unfair to talk about just one of my favourite albums. “Rust In Peace” (Megadeth), “Covenant” (Morbid Angel), “Burning Bridges” (Arch Enemy), “Violent Revolution” (Kreator), “Symbolic” (Death), “Heartwork” (Carcass), “Arise” (Sepultura)…etc

I think that all these formats are good to the public that consumes music. The most important thing is to support the bands buying their merchandise (CD’s, T-shirts, etc).

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

In 2017, at ForCaos festival. It was a great show because the band and the audience were very inspired.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Each member of Pandemmy has another profession. We are an underground band that seeks to be as professional as possible.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

I would invite someone who wasn’t a Nazi, racist, fascist, xenophobe or of any prejudiced profile.

What’s next for the band?

Currently, we have to survive the Covid-19 pandemic. As long as there is no medicine or vaccine, the promotion of our new album will remain virtual. By the way, we have new songs for the next album. We were planning a European tour before all this situation appeared.

Our man in Brazil, Victor, recently got the chance to interview Brazilian Thrash Metallers Kamala! It’s about time that some of these hardworking and very professional bands got a chance to shine outside of their homeland, and in Kamala’s case, Mainland Europe is starting to take notice. I shall now hand you over to Victor and would like to thank, not only him, but Raphael and Isabela for this interview

Keeping a Heavy Metal band alive demands a lot of work and struggle, especially in countries where this genre is not a popular one, and this work in very honorable. Against all the odds, Brazilian Thrash Metal band Kamala, after 17 years on road, has been growing fast in the last few years, especially in Europe. Their singer/guitarist Raphael Olmos, along with drummer Isabela Moraes, explain how they conquered it and the next step for their upcoming album.

Victor: Please. Introduce yourself and tell us when you started to play your instruments and what made you want to create Kamala.

Isabela: Hi, I am Isabela Moraes, drummer for almost 14 years. I have loved this instrument since childhood, because I have a cousin that plays drums too, but I started to learn properly at 15 years old, when my older sister gave me my first drumsticks.

Raphael: Hey, I am Raphael Olmos, guitarist, vocalist and founding member of Kamala.

I started to play when I was 13 years old, after watch the VHS “…a year and a half” by Metallica, I knew that I wanted to be a professional musician when I was 15/16 years old.

And I created Kamala when I was 18 years old…to make the music and the band that I wanted to listen to as a metalhead.

Victor: Since the early days, Kamala showed a different concept, when playing Thrash Metal. The Oriental visuals and sounds have been present in your music since that time. Why did you create this concept for the band?

Raphael: Kamala was born in 2003, and when I created, I wanted to make a band that mixed the heaviness and the energy of metal, with beautiful oriental visuals and melodies…and positive lyrics.

The world is already too negative, and as an artist, when we release a song or an album, we have the responsibility for each person that is connected with the band… I am not talking about religion but, for me, the oriental culture influence is more about the energy stuff, and it is really something that I admire.

Victor: In 2012, Kamala released the third, and the bands last album, with two guitar players in the line-up, “The Seven Deadly Chakras”, and since “Mantra” album (2015); you are in a trio formation. What has been the biggest change in Kamala’s sonority?

Raphael: The biggest change for me, is the way we turned more thrash metal, and more organic. The string tuning turned from drop B to drop D, and the riffs was more ‘IN YOUR FACE! As a trio, we wanted to create something that we can play live, so we need to be better musicians and explore within ourselves the most intricate (that is possible to us) playing, whilst maintaining a strong presence on stage.

Victor: It is rare to find underground bands really fighting to be professional or that want to have a life on road. It demands that the members give up their regular jobs, and live far from family and friends, and you have been on this path since 2014, when the line-up changed to a power trio. How hard was it to find people like Allan Malavasi and Isabela Moraes that had the same desire to make Kamala a famous band?

Raphael: We still have side jobs, but the main point is the band, because the band is getting bigger and bigger, and we need to make more international tours, for example, to spend more time on the road…and a band like us, needs to have all the members with the same objective, to make that happen. Many people wish to live by playing music, but they don’t live for the music, you know. Playing well, is the minimum thing to have as a professional band, but there are many others points to look out for when you share your time and energy with other musicians.

Victor: Kamala has been touring a lot in Europe since the “Mantra” album. Nowadays, you often have more concerts scheduled in Europe than in Brazil. How did the band conquer this space in Europe?

Isabela: I think this happens because we have frequent release of new material, so this creates some expectations to watch the band in action and this opens some doors to showcase our work. We always try to be the most professional that we can in all stages of our jobs within the band. For example, on every tour, we make a specific set-list presentation for every single gig, all the things that we need to speak and songs that we will play in a 40 min, 60 min or 90 min set. We try to be always prepared for any situation on stage…

Victor: From all the countries you play in Europe, France is the one that has showed a true passion for the band. I remember in 2018, when you released your last studio album “Eyes of Creation”, some journalists, who were working at Hellfest, said that they lost the count of how many people they saw wearing Kamala t-shirts in the crowd. Do you know why Kamala became so huge in France?

Raphael: Yeahhh, this is fucking amazing! No, we never expected to be so big in France, and on our first European tour, in 2013, the crowd was a little “cold”…but we returned in 2015 and, since then, we fell in love with France and the French people with our art! Every European tour, we play in France, and in 2016 we made a full French tour…playing every type of gig that you can imagine, and the energy is always AWESOME!

Victor: Recently, some endorsements have appeared and you, Raphael, have become part of the Solar guitars (Sweden) and Evertune (USA) family. How did it happen, and do you think the fact that the band has been playing a lot outside of Brazil helped with the endorsement deals?

Raphael: For sure, being in a Brazilian band, that is constantly touring outside Brazil, helped to open the “eyes and ears” of both brands.

So, besides really good visual stuff, a band with a lot of shows per year and good social media numbers is important and all those points I think were important to brands that I dreamed of and loved. It turns out that these are the brands that trust and believe in my art and work. It is something that I’m really proud of it!

Victor: Kamala has recently released its first live album called “Live in France”. You recorded this during the last Kamala’s show of the sixth European tour, in October of last year and released it in December, just 2 months after the show. How did you decide on that and how was the process to record it?

Isabela: Actually, we didn’t know that we would be recorded, we just knew that the owner of the venue planned to make a live broadcast of our concert on Facebook.

And we were really tight because it was our last gig on this tour. We played and when we were done, he told us that he had recorded our performance in multitrack…It was a big surprise for all of us when we listened. The sound was amazing and in that same moment, we decided to use this material!

Victor: The band has already started the process of recording the new album. What could we expect from the music on this album and when will you release it?

Isabela: The new album is done and ready. Now, with this pandemic situation, we are waiting for a better moment to release, but the album is really beautiful, and the songs are powerful, with intense lyrics, heavy riffs and too much groove. We loved the result and we are extremely excited to show it to all of you.

Victor: I have to say, it is so impressive how Kamala have become so huge in Brazil and in Europe without any label support. Everything you do is independent. Pure work! Do you feel that now is the right time to have one big label help you reach the next level, for example playing European festivals?

Raphael: Yes…a loooooooot of work! And for sure, we feel that we are ready for this next level, to sign with a good international label, play in summer European festivals and make full tours supporting bigger bands. We have lived all the tests through these years, and we know that with a label, the KAMALA name will become bigger and bigger, because a label searches for a band that can be on the road many days/months per year, to promote the releases, and we work a lot for this too!
