EMQ’s with PUNCTURE WOUND

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Gold Coast, Queensland based Old-School Death Metal band Puncture Wound. Huge thanks to rhythm guitarist Travis for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Travis and I play rhythm Guitar. I started the band on the 6/6/16 with the simple vision of creating OSDM. The band consists of Alix on drums, Gene on vocals, Beau on bass and Pedro on lead guitar. To date, we have released a 4 track EP entitled “Brutal Butchery of Bargain Basement Bodies” and more recently, our debut full length, “Complete Carnage of Coagulating Cacophonous Corpses”.

How did you come up with your band name?

I came up with the name on the same day I created the band. When I decided on the name, I did some searches and could not find any death metal bands with that name, which surprised me, so I stuck with the name, had a logo designed and away we went.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The actual scene on the Gold Coast is very small, but the broader scene in Australia has been and is very healthy. Australia has produced some of the best death metal bands which include Abramelin, Misery, Corpse Molestation, Necrotomy, Beyond Mortal Dreams, Darklord to name but a few.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our latest release will be a single from the new album called ‘Devoid Mausoleum’ which is being released through CDN Records. The single is from the debut full length “Complete Carnage of Coagulating Cacophonous Corpses”. The single will be released by the time this is done and will be a lyric video on YouTube.

Devoid Mausoleum (Official Lyric Video)

Who have been your greatest influences?

All early old school death metal like Death, Incantation, early Cannibal Corpse, Dismember, Massacre. Basically, everything between 1989 and 1993. Hahaha. Basically, all the early Earache Records and Nuclear Blast releases.

What first got you into music?

I was drawn to music and my Father always had music playing in the car, house and I found my own stuff. In 1988 I was introduced to Anthrax, Metallica and Kreator which I just couldn’t get enough of. In 1990, I was introduced to Deicide and Morbid Angel and that is where my life changed for ever.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

There is no specific band or musician. As long as they live for OSDM, I could see myself working with them.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

I would prefer the smaller festivals that mainly have death metal. The Maryland Deathfest would be great.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Never received any gifts. So, if your reading this, and like our band, send us some love. Hahaha.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Please support all forms of music by buying bands merchandise, be it CDs, T-shirts, concert tickets. Most death metal bands do this for the love of it as there is no money to be made, however, by supporting bands like ours and buying merch, it allows us to keep it going and putting out more music, T-shirt designs and possible tours.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

It would have to be the Godfather of death metal, Mr Chuck Schuldiner. The first 4 Death albums are all masterpieces. The death of Brett Hoffman really hit me hard, and I had never even met the guy. However, I bought “The 10 Commandments” when it first came out followed by “Retribution”. These 2 albums had a huge impact in my life during those years and it really struck a chord with me. He is really missed.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I enjoy the comradery and teamwork making/creating our music. It’s extremely fun and allows us to release stress. What I hate is the politics and bullshit involved behind the scenes. I stay away from all that and if it’s not a good fit for Puncture Wound, then we stay away from it.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Probably that bands get more of a cut from these fucking greedy online streaming services and the like. I hate to name and shame, Bandcamp is a good tool, but fuck me they take a huge percentage of digital sales. When I say huge, I mean nearly all of it. Don’t even get me started on the other so-called services like Spotify etc…

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Massacre – “From Beyond”.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

CD’s for quality of sound. Vinyl for layouts and visualisation. Downloads for convenience by loading several thousand songs/albums on your phone.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

I really enjoyed our support slot of Artillery when they came to Australia. They were cool guys and we played tight and fast.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Just keep doing what I’ve been doing for 30 years. Keep buying death metal as I am a huge fan and collector. All formats. I have tons of t-shirts, CDs, tapes and vinyl. I just can’t get enough. Lately I’ve been buying and collecting the Xtreme Music 10”vinyl series.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

James Murphy, Mike Smith, Kam Lee, John McEntee and Brett Hoffman (R.I.P).

What’s next for the band?

We are currently working on the follow up album, which will be our DDoDDD album, and will be released through CDN Records whenever it’s complete. We always have new bits and pieces of merchandise coming out so keep up to date with us if you want anything.

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

I don’t really know what they are as they are not available here is Australia. But I have to say cake, simply because they have cake in their title. After a Google search the look to be a biscuit, so fucked if I know. hahaha Can they be both??

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for the interview and interest in the band. Thanks to Craig and CDN Records for having faith in us and releasing the CD. Everyone should like and follow all of our pages and they all have different content that gets released on them.
