EMQ’s With DAIMOS

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with German Experimental Metal project, Daimos. Huge thanks to guitarist and composer, Frieder, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

I’m Frieder, composer and guitar player of Daimos. I wrote a lot of songs in very different genres and realized that they all have something big in common. With the help of more than twenty musicians, I created my first album “Prism”, a big selection of heavy and rocking music.

How did you come up with your band name?

The name Daimos has got a lot of meanings. Actually written Deimos, who’s a god from Greek mythology and also the name of a moon of Mars. It was the fantastic look of the irregular shaped moon that inspired me, because it felt so special to me. It’s just one of a kind.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

I’m from Thuringia in Germany. The Rock and Metal scene here is big and offers a lot of talented musicians and artists.

What is your latest release?

The big release was the debut album “Prism”, from Oct. 31th 2021. The latest release is a guitar playalong video for the 2nd Song on the album – Trapped In A Nightmare’.

Who have been your greatest influences?

There are so many inspiring musicians to me. I guess the greatest influences are guitar players like Mikko Lindström, because of his deep, heavy riffs and Dream Theater’s John Petrucci.

What first got you into music?

My father, who is also a guitar player.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Unleash The Archers, they’re one of my current favourites.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Coachella Music & Arts Festival in California, because there’s so much going on.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

I’m just thankful for everyone who enjoys what I’m doing. There are so many people who like the different moods and the diversity of the songs and I’m glad for each one of them.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Only one? – damn! This is a hard question. But I would choose Taylor Hawkins.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

For me the most important thing is to be free. Free to do whatever I like. If I want to write a Country song, I just do and enjoy it. I think there’s not really something that I hate, but the worst thing is the time, when I have to record things again – sometimes I find small, hardly noticeable mistakes in the recordings – I’m just too much a perfectionist.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I would try to give smaller acts more chances to get the possibility to present their music to the world. There’re so many great artists that deserve to be heard.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Awake” from Dream Theater, it guided me to Progressive music.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

The best sound is definitely Vinyl. Downloads are the best for sharing.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

The best gig I ever played was with my last band in Hamburg. It was a wonderful location and it just felt great to me.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I love and respect all the different kinds of art, because you can express in so many ways. I would maybe become a painter or a stone sculptor.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Just my best friends, they understand my strange kind of humour best. LOL!

What’s next for the band?

The next step is the upcoming album, which is already in progress. There will be a lot of new things.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

A lot. The main sites are YouTube, Spotify and Amazon music.

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

For me they’re biscuits. A cake would have to be larger.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

I’m very glad for the possibility to talk with you a little about Daimos. Thank you very much.
