EMQ’s With Night’s Edge

EMQ’s With Night’s Edge

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with USA Alt Metallers, Night’s Edge. Huge thanks to their Vocalist, Brian, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

We are Night’s Edge, and I am Brian, vocalist and bassist for the band.  We also have Damian Remmell on guitars and Dan Hunt on drums. We formed in 2018 and have been grinding ever since, playing a gazillion shows and releasing three albums, an EP, a couple of cover song singles, all building up to our upcoming fourth album, “The World That Never Was”, which is coming out August 21, 2025.  We are wildly excited to get this new music out into the world.

How did you come up with your band name?

Do you know the feeling you get when the day starts to come to a close, but you have a big night ahead? Maybe you’re going out on the town with friends, or maybe you have a huge performance, or maybe it’s just an important evening, like Halloween. I don’t know about you, but when the sun starts setting and I know I’m about to be getting into an adventure come dark, I am filled with anticipation and excitement; it feels like an adventure is about to begin. That moment in time, that is the feeling of being on the edge of night. Night’s Edge.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are from Baltimore, Maryland, USA, and have no plans to relocate.  We love our scene here and all of the friends we have made in it; in fact, all three of us were friends within the scene before we all ended up in Night’s Edge together. The Baltimore music scene has some of the most enthusiastic, unhinged, and fun fans that we are fortunate to also call our friends. It is definitely worth checking out a local show if you are in town, and just being a part of the chaos. Crab pits, conga lines, line dances, and of course, circle pits and walls of death.  It’s a lot of fun.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our last release was our song ‘Someone to Stay’, the second single from and the first song of our new album. We picked this song as a single and also as an album opener because it has a little bit of everything that Night’s Edge brings to the table, touching on some really shreddy guitar leads and solos, some chugging breakdowns, and really big vocals over a massive chorus. It’s emotionally lyrical but fun and engaging musically, and I think it really primes the listener for what is ahead.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Each of us has different influences.  Our drummer, Dan, is influenced heavily by Tool and Linkin Park, and our guitarist, Damian, is heavily influenced by Mastodon and Thrash Metal as a whole. I have a wide range of influences myself, the two biggest of which have got to be Type O Negative and Coheed and Cambria. I think all of these influences come through in our songs at one time or another.

What first got you into music?

Each of us got into music through a different avenue, but the stories are all actually pretty similar.  For some of us, it was seeing early 00’s concert tours such as Projeckt Revolution or Warped tour, for others of us it was being introduced to Thrash Metal in high school.  For myself, it was really my parents who got me into music.  There was always music playing in the house when I was a kid, and by my sixth or seventh birthday, they had gotten me a boombox with a bunch of CDs, which included Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”.  The deal was basically sealed from there.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I’m going to give you a couple of answers here. Legacy, all time, it would be Trent Reznor.  I LOVE Nine Inch Nails and I also think that Trent Reznor is one of the greatest producers and musical minds of my lifetime. He elevates anything that he works on, and it would be phenomenal to be able to see how he works.

For a more modern/up-and-coming pick, Poppy would be a great collaboration.  I really love her new album Negative Spaces, and I really love the collabs she has done with other artists.  Her transformation in sound and artistry has really been impressive, and I think she’s one of the more creative forces out there right now.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Wacken Open Air.  I have been there for the last three years and this year will make it my fourth.  It is the biggest Metal festival in the world (I think) and playing Wacken would be a badge of honor.  It is like the Grand Ole Opry of Metal.  The atmosphere there is amazing – being around 80,000 other metalheads from all over the world just there to enjoy music, drink beer, and have a good time is unlike anything else.  I have made friends there that I see each year and to be a part of the lineup would be a dream.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Not a gift, more of the other way around, but the weirdest (declined) item exchange we’ve had was when a couple of years ago, a guy that we do not know messaged our band page and asked if we had “worn clothes”.  I didn’t really know what he meant, so I directed him to our t-shirts and such on Bandcamp, he said “no, like stage worn”. I explained to him that no, we do not sell those and he got upset, saying, “I’m sure you guys wear socks”.

I don’t really know what he was going to do with our socks or whatever else we may have sent, but it was certainly a weird request.  Who knows?

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

We hope you love our new album, “The World That Never Was”. We’re pretty sure you will, because we all love it. It’s got everything that you’d expect from Night’s Edge, plus a million things you wouldn’t.  Do not sleep on this album.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

It’s hard to say, so many of my favorite Rock stars are dead, and it’s hard to pick just one.  If I had to, I’d probably go with Chester Bennington just because of how much we love LP and how it would have been awesome if he were able to overcome the struggles he documents in all of his songs.  His passing really changes the context for so much of their music.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

We love playing shows and we love writing music.  Both have a similar rewarding feeling, with the former, the feeling of really getting a crowd going and exchanging that live show energy with fans is hard to beat.  Right there competing with it though is the feeling of listening to a mastered final version of a song that we’ve worked endlessly on and thinking “Damn, we nailed this!”.  Had that feeling a lot listening to the masters of this new album!

I’m not especially fond of the social media side of being a musician, personally, it’s not really a space that I feel creative in and I struggle to make good content.  I don’t really think that musical artistry necessarily translates well into short-form content, and that those who get the most attention from social media are often not even close to the best artists.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I think that streaming (which I use, so I am also guilty) has devalued music.  I think that we have gotten spoiled being able to pay $10 a month for access to all of the music in the world and this has not only removed the primary revenue stream for bands, but it has also made individual songs and albums less important to people.  If you only have 10$ to buy a CD and you go ahead and get the CD, you’re going to listen to it and listen to it because of its relative value to you.  If you take that 10$ and get access to all of the music ever, you are not going to give that same album the same chance to grow on you.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“October Rust” by Type O Negative.  It includes my favorite song ‘Love You To Death’ and is a one-of-a-kind album.  Nothing sounds exactly like it, nothing creates the exact same mood, and it will never be reproduced.  Gothic classic changed my life.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I came up on CDs, so that is what I prefer. I think the portability was pretty hard to beat (in terms of physical media) and the sound quality was solid.  The artwork is not as expansive as with vinyl, so records do have that going for them.  Cassettes are terrible and I hate them.  No idea why tapes are getting a resurgence.  They sound like ass.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

The best gig we ever played had to have been last year’s Party Like it’s 793 festival at the Brimming Horn Meadery in Milton, Delaware.  I know Milton Delaware sounds like a “where?” place, but trust me, the Brimming Horn is an AWESOME meadery and they don’t do shows all the time, but when they do, they truly are amazing. It’s actually run by two metalheads, so the meadery has a lot of heavy metal theming, which makes it an even better place for a metal show.  We actually were the first band of the night before a couple of touring acts from Ohio, including Axioma, Avowal, and the headliner Osi and the Jupiter. The audience was full of familiar and new faces, it was packed, and people were into it.  It’s going to be hard to top that show.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

If I weren’t a musician, I’d have to get into something else creative and artistically exploratory.  I’m not much of a visual artist so maybe I’d get into writing?  Try my hand at authoring some spooky or dark fantasy stories.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Lemmy, Hendrix, Grace Slick, Keith Richards, and Janis Joplin. We are going to party!

What’s next for the band?

The release of the album! We do have a couple more pre-release singles coming out with “Smite” due June 6th, with a very cool, very fun lyric video made by Nick Bonsanto and then another single “Love Fiction” coming out on July 10th.  The full album is going to be out August 21st and we will be playing as many shows as we can get between now and the end of the year. Maybe we will come through your town!

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

I’m not going to use Google, I’m not going to use Google, I’m not going to use Google…a Bun on a cob?

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for the interview! Just to go a little bit more about the album and who it’s for, we really put effort into crafting an original sound that isn’t quite like anyone else.  You can hear influences in songs, of course, but overall, we really believe that we have something different to offer, both sonically and with our lyrical explorations.  If you are someone looking for something new and fresh in hard rock/metal, give our new album a shot when it comes out. We really don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
