Abraham – idsungwüssä
Pelagic Records
26/09/2025
Review by Oli Gonzalez
7.5/10

Well, this was a journey! Just when you think Pelagic Records can’t get any crazier, they throw a curveball at you in the shape of Swiss Post-Metallers Abraham and their 8 track effort “idsungwüssä”. There seems to be something in the Alps at the moment as fellow Swiss Post-Metallers Colmaar and label mates Zatokrev also have new music out! The question is, then, how will “idsungwüssä” compare to these artists and others? A third in a trilogy of albums which makes one wonder if listening to the other two is necessary for the full enjoyment and experience.

One thing’s for sure though, Abraham’s music is not for the faint of heart! It’s abrasive, very rough around the edges, and challenges the boundaries of heavy music! This is achieved through unusual song structures and patterns, as well as dissonant and disruptive guitar tones. None-aesthetic in the same way an Eddie Van Halen solo would be, yet still enough to lure you in and to keep your ears firmly locked in in an aural trance! The band spoke of their extra work in the studio and in production to create a larger and fuller guitar sound, as they “just stacked more guitars whenever we needed”.‘Stacked seems like a reasonable adjective for the dense wall of sound that comes from the guitars and also the bass! It’s difficult to digest for the casual listeners, but definitely one for those looking for something more challenging and progressive.

Dave’s vocals were being drowned out in the earlier songs on the record, lost in a wall of distortion and chaos. Though it’s really during ‘Naked in a Naked Sky’ where the music is toned down slightly and his lyrics are much more salient. His voice is filled with a sense of despair and angst, matching the bleak undertone of the instrumentation. The theme is the same in ‘Suurwaut’. Even if it’s sang in German, the same raw emotional output is the same from David who is also the band’s drummer!

The pace is slowed considerably during ‘06.00.40U’, one of the more psychedelic infused attack on the senses and an embodiment of Abraham’s desire to write heavy music by their own non-conventional rules. This slower more ambient timbre is needed to provide respite for what’s about to come; a grim sludgy atmospheric blast on the senses that dominates the closing minutes of ‘Home’, the album’s final track.

What a ride that was! The musical embodiment of taking the road least travelled and taking the scenic route rather than the most practical direct route. Though make no mistake, there’s going to be no pretty countryside or sunshine on this scenic route. No, this is a dark and twisted journey through the murky depths of the human psyche and all the unsettling non-pleasantries that come with it. This is going to be a tough sell for the casual musos, but for lovers of all things heavy bold and ambitious, this is for you!
