EMQs with The Last Bastion

EMQs with The Last Bastion

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs, this time with UK Heavy Metallers, The Last Bastion. Huge thanks to their Frontman/ Rhythm Guitarist Kev Brown, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

I’m Kev Brown, I am the frontman of The Last Bastion, playing rhythm guitar and vocals.

How did you come up with your band name?

The name of the band–The Last Bastion, came from the concept of wanting to protect our way of life and being part of the Heavy Metal community. So.. our tag line was born “Defending Our Way of Life”

From DOWOL the imagery of a “Bastion” resonated strongly with our ideologies, paying homage to those who came before while creating an inclusive Battalion for the future of the Metal Community and beyond

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

Newcastle upon Tyne, England, The rock and metal scene in the North East of England is very much alive, with plenty of venues and various different types of bands. It’s exciting to be part of it.

What is your latest release?

Our single and music video release is ‘Legion of the Damned’, which came out October 31st, building upon our debut album “Who We Are”.

Who have been your greatest influences?

As a collective, we are inspired by a wide variety of artists to create and play meaningful music. But me personally, my main influences come from Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) and James Hetfield (Metallica).

What first got you into music?

I’ve been drawn to music for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid, it started with singing in choirs and performing in plays — I had a flair for entertaining from a

young age.

By the time I was around 10, I picked up piano and trumpet, and that’s when I really started getting into the sound and feel of instruments. It became clear that music was more than just a hobby — it was a way for me to express myself. Around that time, I also started discovering classic rock, and I just fell in love with the emotion and energy in that music. In my teens, I made the switch to guitar, and that’s when heavy metal really took over my life. Since then, I’ve never looked back. I’m still singing, still playing, and doing it all to the best of my ability — whatever people make of that!

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

Dave Mustaine. The chance to learn about the industry from a veteran and to write with him would be an invaluable experience.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Download or Bloodstock. Sharing the stage with all the amazing talents of these festivals would be something, as a collective, we all dream of doing.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Nothing, just yet.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Our message to the fans is simple — thank you for standing with us. The Last Bastion isn’t just a band; it’s a symbol of resilience and unity. In a world that tries to break you down, we want our music to remind you that we stand together.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

That is not an easy question… Do I have to pick just one?

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love performing our music and seeing the crowd connect with the songs. The thing I hate the most is how musicians and bands are not as valued as they used to be.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Remove streaming services, I know they are a great way of getting your music to the masses but, on the other hand, it’s killing the music industry.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Again, just one? If I had to choose its Rust in Peace, Megadeth.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or Downloads?

Vinyl

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Supporting Avenger, at Trillian’s Rock Bar, Newcastle.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Nothing, it’s not a choice, it’s a way of life.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Lemmy, Ronnie James Dio, James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine and Chad Kroeger

What’s next for the band?

We are currently working on our next album. In between writing and recording, we are booking gigs up and down the country for 2026 and looking forward to bringing our music to as many new people as we can.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

A Bap

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
