EMQs With Juliet Ruin

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Canadian Metalcore band, Juliet Ruin. Huge thanks to their vocalist, Jess Fleming, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and what can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

I am Jess Fleming and I sing in Juliet Ruin! We started in 2016 and have been having finding our sound ever since.

How did you come up with your band name?

It was supposed to be my stage name, but the rest of the band loved it so we decided to make it the band’s name.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are from Alberta Canada. The Alberta scene is awesome! It’s eclectic and there is always a cool band waiting to be discovered!

What is your latest release?

Our latest release is our EP “Regime” and the single is ‘Reactance Theory’ and also before that we released ‘Poems by a Poltergeist’.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Vocally definitely Devin Townsend, Corey Taylor, Lady Gaga and bandwise a very large collection from Mastodon to Guns n Roses.

What first got you into music?

I think just a general interest in music and how it had so much power to enrich our lives.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Devin Townsend for sure.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Honestly we’d be so excited to play anywhere.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Nothing super weird but a lot of sweet things like framed photos of us together, drawings, cards.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

You can get through the hard days and you deserve love.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Stumped on this one.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Being able to share music and experiences with people is very cool. Don’t really hate anything. Just try to stay grateful.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

So much. But the issues are symptoms of much larger problems haha.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Brat” by Charli xcx.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Hmmmm to each their own! Not cassettes.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Double opening gigs with Jinjer for sure.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Bowling maybe?

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Hayley Williams, Gordon Ramsey, Macaulay Culkin, Trisha Paytas, Michelangelo (the turtle).

What’s next for the band?

Enjoy the new releases and play some fun shows!

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Julietruin on Facebook Instagram and TikTok

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

A roll? Right? Hahaha they all sound delicious don’t they?

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you!!
