EMQs With Primaluce

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with French Prog Rock/ Metal project, Primaluce. Huge thanks to their Guitarist/ Pianist/ Composer/ Producer, and project founder, Stefano, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Stefano and I’m the composer, guitarist, keyboard player, and producer behind Primaluce.
The project started more than ten years ago as an instrumental, compositional journey, slowly evolving through different phases.

Over time, Primaluce grew from a solo vision into a collaborative project, eventually embracing vocals and a more narrative approach with Way Of Perfection.

It has never been about speed or trends, but about letting ideas mature naturally.

How did you come up with your band name?

The name comes from the idea of “first light”, the moment when something begins to exist but is not yet fully defined. It represents transition, awareness, and the fragile space between darkness and clarity.
That concept has always reflected both the music and the mindset behind Primaluce.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

The project is based in Paris, but it’s strongly European in spirit.
The scene here is diverse and open-minded, with a solid underground culture and a real appreciation for originality. It’s not the easiest place for progressive music, but it’s inspiring because it challenges you to be honest and distinctive.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our latest release is the full-length album “Way Of Perfection”. It’s the first Primaluce album with a strong vocal presence and a fully unified narrative, both musically and lyrically.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Progressive bands like Genesis, Rush, Yes, Dream Theater, and Enchant have been fundamental. Melodic metal bands such as In Flames shaped our sense of atmosphere and emotion. Pink Floyd influenced our approach to space and storytelling. Classical composers like Beethoven and Liszt taught us that tension, struggle, and imperfection can become form.

What first got you into music?

Curiosity. Music felt like a language that could express things words couldn’t. At first it was pure fascination, then it became a necessity, and eventually a way of understanding myself and the world.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

Steven Wilson. Because of his ability to balance introspection, sonic depth, and conceptual clarity without losing emotional honesty.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

ProgPower Europe. It’s one of the few festivals where progressive music is truly listened to, not just consumed. The audience understands patience, complexity, and emotional depth.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

A request to perform a live webcam show for their birthday. This was many years ago, long before it became normal. Weird, unexpected, but also very human.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thank you for listening deeply. Not just to the sound, but to the intention behind it. In a fast and distracted world, real listening is rare and valuable.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Frank Zappa. For his intelligence, his fearlessness, and his refusal to accept artistic boundaries.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I enjoy the moment when an idea finally takes shape and starts to breathe on its own. What I dislike is the constant pressure to turn creativity into content instead of experience.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

The obsession with immediacy. Great music often needs time, both to be created and to be understood.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums.

    “Lunar Strain” by In Flames.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs or Downloads?

Vinyl for the ritual. Downloads for accessibility. Each format has its own meaning depending on how you listen.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Some of the most meaningful moments didn’t happen on stage, but in the studio. Those are the places where music reveals its true intentions.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Probably something connected to writing, research, or communication. Anything that involves connecting ideas and people.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Beethoven, Pink Floyd-era Roger Waters, Steven Wilson, Carl Sagan, and Frank Zappa. I imagine it would be chaotic, uncomfortable, and unforgettable.

    What’s next for the band?

Carefully selected live performances and continued exploration.
    No rush, no repetition.
    Only steps that feel necessary.

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

The official website and Bandcamp are our main platforms, alongside social media channels like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

We prefer spaces where music can still be experienced as a journey.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

    A roll.
    Simple, functional, and universally understandable.
    Much like good music.
