EMQ’s With KADABRA

EMQ’s With KADABRA
Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview, courtesy of Victor, with Vinhedo, São Paulo, Brazil based Heavy/Thrash Metal band, Kadabra. Huge thanks to lead vocalist/guitarist, Paulo, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hi, my name is Paulo. I am responsible for the guitars and lead vocals in Kadabra. This band started in 2016 with me and our bass player, Danilo. We were in a musical limbo at the time, playing in bands, which had no professionalism. So, we decided to make something really serious, to write good songs, record and play live as much as possible. We wrote our first album in 2017, called “Devastation’s Songs”. After that, we did, in 2019, our second work, “Remains Of The Past”. Now, in 2021, Kadabra has released our third album: “Underground Resistance”, which is all sung in Portuguese.
How did you come up with your band name?
I really don’t know the origin, but I remember that we thought of a name which everybody could speak. Like a universal language.
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
We are from Brazil and we live in Vinhedo, a small town very close to São Paulo. I think our scene is weak, because there is almost nobody interested in our bands. The concert’s houses don’t invite us to play because of this, working all the time with cover/tribute bands. There is almost no union between the bands and producers. Finally, everything related with music in Brazil is very expensive because of the taxes. Our government takes lots of money from us in every product we buy.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
We have released now, in 2021, our third record, called “Underground Resistance”. I sang everything in Portuguese this time, different from what we have done. It is a mix from traditional heavy metal with bay area Thrash and a little bit of Brazilian Death Metal. We did the production all by ourselves and we intend to release many video clips in the next months.

Who have been your greatest influences?
I think Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax…and, of course, Sepultura, Korzus, Claustrofobia, Nervochaos, Torture Squad. These are great bands from Brazil.
What first got you into music?
I like everything in music, since always. The melodies, the aggressive parts, the lyrics…
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?
Nowadays, I think I would like to play with Grand Magus, Pentagram, Master and Night Demon.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Every kid, especially the guitar players, dreams about great stages and crowds…Lots of people loving you, all this stuff. I am different: my dream is a functional local scene, better conditions to play in the underground. It makes me very sad, because I entered into music thinking that it would be possible and today, I am thinking that I will not see this. But, about your question, I don’t have these dreams, I play equally in every space which treats us with respect. I don’t mind if it is small or giant.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
I never received a gift, but a guy asked her girlfriend in marriage in the middle of a Kadabra concert. He asked to come up on the stage and speak a few words on the mic. I never dreamed that it would happen. I thought that he would say some random crap. But we never know…
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
We are open to talk with you all, just look for us in the social medias and, when it becomes possible again, in concerts. We thank you all for everything.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Dimebag or Randy Rhoads…
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
It’s great to play and write new songs, it’s like a discovery. It’s a pleasure that I cannot describe, I swear. However, I hate the conditions of work.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I think it is like a cultural thing, more than the music industry itself. But, here in Brazil, there are lots of artists who don’t know anything about music and everybody loves them. At the same time, many other people who play like hell and nobody even knows.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Peste” by Claustrofobia.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
I’m not a purist. I only consume download or streaming today. But I buy other merchandising products.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
I am a producer of little events in our region. Most of them were pleasurable, especially one called Carqueja! Carqueja is a type of “pinga” or “cachaça”, a traditional drink from our country. It is strong like vodka. That is the origin of the festival’s name. We did it with no interest in money and we got some sponsors. That was the way to get the perfect conditions for musicians and the public. Kadabra played and we killed that night.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I like art in all ways. Maybe I would be a circus artist. Maybe I will do it for fun someday. I also like my real profession, Psychology.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
I would call some other friends from local bands who are working hard with us and, of course, Victor Augusto, because he is a great headbanger and a great beer drinker.
(Victor Here. Thanks brother. Sooner or later, we will meet each other at a concert or dinner to drink beer and have fun. Also, congrats for your hard work to keep music alive.)
What’s next for the band?
Now, with the album released and the pandemic strong in Brazil (yes, our politicians do not help a thing), the plan is to invest in video clips and hard work on social media.
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
We always play with this question in our concerts, it is like: “Hey guys, thank you for being here and follow us on Instagram, Youtube, Spotify, Pornhub, Tinder…”. It always works. We are on all the traditional social media.

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?
I have no idea…
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thank you for the space, it is great to be here.
