I’m not saying my reputation proceeds me, but Noise Cartel have started bypassing our main inbox and sending obnoxious filth directly to me to cut out the middle-man. One of the more recent examples of this is Hip-Hop/Rock artist Nascar Aloe, who is dropping his latest EP on legendary Punk label Epitaph. “HEY ASSHOLE!” is the name of the record and unsurprisingly it really speaks to me as a belligerent prick.
Beginning with a big fat Grunge riff straight out the Mudhoney playbook and some pounding kick drums the title track delivers barbed insults with Mr Aloe adopting a laconic slacker drawl, like if Beck was a total bellend. He makes it abundantly clear that he “don’t like ya, don’t need ya” and “where he’s from they’d beat ya” which is fair enough if you ask me. It’s a fun little jam that sets the tone for a record that’s sole interest appears to be getting up in your face and saying mean things.
‘Gameboy’ ups the intensity considerably with distorted screamed rapping over a bleeping sample and an obnoxious Trap beat. If you’re familiar with Scarlxrd you’ll know whether this is for you or not, although Nascar appears to be more capable of penning something approaching a hook. This transitions nicely into ‘Disgrace’, which rides a sleazy laid back beat and sees a more bassy, mellow delivery vocally as weird broken Nintendo beats build to a stripped down outro that provides a welcome release of the gas pedal.
From here on out things conclude with a trio of rowdy bangers that mainly consist of varying degrees of violent threats and more robot aneurism bleeps. ‘Drag Race’ is the pick of the bunch for me, possessing a catchy shout-along hook, throat shredding vocals and an off-kilter beat that burrows into your brain, presumably to commit an act of vandalism. ‘Don’t 4get Da Name’ is also good aggro fun and the declaration of “I’ll sink your ship just like Titanic, bitch” on ‘Ogre’ is the perfect sign-off to proceedings.
With most songs barely breaking the two-minute mark and a fun sense of raucous momentum this record is a shot of adrenaline that you’ll either vibe with or chuck your earphones across the room in disgust. More a proof of concept than an opus of any kind this is an interesting little appetiser for what will hopefully be a more expansive main course. Like a shot of cheap tequila “Hey Asshole” is quick, nasty but ultimately leaves you buzzing after you’ve necked it.
