EMQ’s With NYMPHIC

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with UK Nu-Metal band, Nymph. Huge thanks to them for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the band’s history?

We are NYMPHIC, a Nu-Metal band, with a passion for storytelling!

We all met separately before joining the project one by one. Singer Stix and Guitarist George met at the end of 2018 at The Castle, North Acton, where Stix was working at the time. George moved into the university halls next door to the pub and then started working there too. They bonded over music and soon began working on the NYMPHIC project together. They then met Tony on ‘find my band.com’. Finally, The Castle closed down so Stix and George went to work at a cheese packing company where unexpectedly, they met Omi, the final member of the band.

How did you come up with your band name?

The idea for the band name came from a word I first heard when I was 14. It struck me as the perfect way to describe the flower character I had created, now known as the NYMPHIC flower. This word resonated with me because it carried a sense of the mythical and the feminine, emulating the juxtaposition of light and shadow that I wanted this flower character to represent.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

London UK, the Metal scene here is thriving at the moment, with some amazing underground metal bands on the circuit, it took some time for the scene to revive after COVID but it’s now in full force. Shout out to the London Metal Coalition (LMC) and the London Metal Valkyries (LMV) for playing their enormous role in the community and commitment to supporting underground bands and creating an inclusive safe space for metalheads in London.

What is your latest release?

‘Peony’ is our latest track, part one of The NYMPHIC story which tells the tale of our mascot the NYMPHIC flower. This is out now alongside a music video, with the first chapter of the NYMPHIC comic to be released shortly after.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Rage Against The Machine, Linkin Park, Led Zeppelin… We all have fairly different music tastes that layer nicely.

What first got you into music?

Stix – Mum and uncle played awesome rock cassettes when I was young, my uncle was a musician too and I always wanted to play like him.

Omi – Watching music videos when very young, I said to myself I wanted to be a musician and play live for the rest of my life.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I Prevail, they have such an aggressive sound and a wicked electronic and synth element that we really would like to experiment with.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Knot Fest. Because c’mon it would be mental.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Nothing yet but we are open to gifts. Give us gifts, please.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thank you so much for your support. And bring us gifts.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Freddie Mercury.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Love being able to express our creativity, perform and connect with like-minded people. Hate Being broke.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

More support financially for underground bands and grassroots venues.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Linkin Park – “Minutes to Midnight”.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

CD’s baby – quality May be shoddy, but we all grew up collecting them!

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Finals of Metal to the Masses grand final at Tufnell Dome…we are still talking about the mosh pit now.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Probably our day jobs, engineering, gardening, event lighting and pizza chef, respectively.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

All of our mothers plus our NYMPHIC flower.

What’s next for the band?

We are working on 3 new singles alongside 3 more music videos, hoping to get a small tour together sometime soon.

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Keep up to date with all things NYMPHIC on our Instagram @nymphic_band (https://www.instagram.com/nymphic_band/) this is the best place to see what we are up to, learn about release dates and upcoming gigs and be the first to get your hands on the NYMPHIC comics.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

A bun (Stix still advocates for bap), but this question has actually caused such a rift in the band we may now be pursuing separate projects.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

That bread roll question was fucking divisive.
