Brasília, the capital of Brazil, has unique trademarks such as its airplane-shaped architecture and the nomination as the nationwide Capital of Rock n’ Roll. I believe the amount of Rock bands that were born here, over the 65 years since the city’s creation, could leave some kind of DNA in all musicians here – not just as musical influences, but maybe in a kind of genetic desire to always be musically active.

Their Heavy Metal scene is always surprising us with incredible new bands. Sometimes, those bands come from young kids starting to play, sometimes they are just made by well-known musicians that are searching for new paths and here is where Tarrasque fits well. The band is formed of musicians that most Metalheads have already heard good things from.

Basically, these guys put together the best of their skills to play brutal and technical Death Metal. Suffocation was the first main influence that popped into my mind hearing this album for the first time, as well as a very smooth Djent influence, but nothing that strays from the aggressiveness of good Death Metal.

I believe the strong identity in their music comes from the Portuguese lyrics. As the band explains, “the album “Cânticos do Abismo” is a macabre opera in eight acts, each addressing different forms of degradation: religious, physical, psychological and cosmic. Combining elements of body horror, criticism of institutional faith, insanity and redemptive violence, the work creates a cohesive and disturbing universe, where the only constant is death, sometimes as punishment, sometimes as liberation.”

They also explained that “the songs delve deep into the darkest recesses of human existence, corrupted spirituality and the decadence of the modern world. With a brutal death metal sound full of aggression and oppressive atmosphere, the album proposes a lyrical journey that mixes cosmic horror, social criticism and – explicit viscerality”.

Overall, my impression was the killer riffs that don’t repeat themselves too much, as we hear in many similar bands. We can thank the guitarists Renan Santos and Victor Hormida for that. Everything is perfectly easy to hear, even the bass of Bruno Mota, powerfully appears in a style where it is easy to be hidden. The drums of Diego Promessas are incredibly well played and recorded. The best part of it for me. By the way, the record production to have this kind of heaviness was impressive.

“Cânticos do Abismo” carves Tarrasque into one more important band in their local musical scene – part of Brasília’s tradition of offering incredible bands throughout the decades.
