EMQ’s With In Vertigo

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Canadian Rock band, In Vertigo. Huge thanks to their Lead Vocalist, Reed, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Reed, and I sing lead vocals for In Vertigo. The band was formed nearly 10 years ago by me, Shaddy (Guitar) and Duncan (Bass, Vox). Both Shad and Dunc’s band, Lucid Scream, had disbanded, and I myself was looking for a new original band to start writing and recording new material. Once we gained Keaton on the drums, we were off to the races! Though a lot has transpired and we have had many ups and downs, we are still kicking and all 4 of us are still flying the In Vertigo banner.

How did you come up with your band name?

I believe it was Shaddy who came up with the name. As I recall, we liked the name as it described the state of the audience after we would throw down night after night.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are based out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The scene has always been alive and making waves. I feel it comes and goes just like the boom and bust economy we have here in Calgary.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We just released our latest EP “Prevail”.

Who have been your greatest influences?

We all have a vast and diverse musical background, but normally bands like Led Zeppelin, Guns N’ Roses, Audioslave, 90’s Grunge bands, Aerosmith, Oasis and various other rock bands have left their mark on our sound.

What first got you into music?

Personally, it was around my early teens and just being infatuated with rock stars, how music made me feel and being creative. Haven’t looked back since.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Slash, Jerry Cantrell, Sting, Elton John and Noel Gallagher

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Maybe Glastonbury, looks like an outrageous time. Would love to see those flags flying high in the sky while we did our thing.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

It isn’t weird by any stretch, but we have a lovely fan of ours who keeps crocheting clothing items for us. So we are never cold, that is for sure.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thank you for being patient. We have had a long road to get these songs recorded, mixed and subsequently released. So thank you!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Personally, either Chris Cornell or Dio. Best voices ever!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love the freedom of expression and laying my thoughts out there on stage. I can tell you as a full-time musician that what I hate about it is the uncertainties that come with every new day, but that is also the thing that keeps me hungry and pushing forward. So, nothing really to add in terms of hating anything.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Pay us. Or take a chance on the little guy again. Remember when music was really good?

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Blue” – Joni Mitchell, “Appetite for Destruction” – Guns N’ Roses, “Sometimes” – City and Colour, “Be Here Now” – Oasis and “Jar of Flies” – Alice in Chains.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

With In Vertigo, playing The Palace Theatre with Steel Panther was a personal favourite of mine. But playing with Pop Evil in Grande Prairie and Bret Michaels in Edmonton are also up there.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Probably an Indiana Jones wannabe and/or a linguistics/history professor.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Chris Cornell, Dio, Layne Staley, Benji Webbe and Gandhi.

What’s next for the band?

Making sure we get out the remaining music we have written and recorded, and then see where we are after that! Hopefully performing some select dates and potentially touring again down the road.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll, or a Tea Cake?

I am going to roll with a Batch of Bap’d Barm Muffin Bun Cobs.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

I hope everyone in your world is happy and healthy and we appreciate anyone who has taken the time to read this interview and check out our tunes! Cheers!
