EMQ’s with N.W.77

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Brazilian Crossover, N.W.77. Huge thanks to their vocalist/bassist Marcel Ianuck for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Marcel Ianuck: I’m Marcel Ianuck, bassist, vocalist and founder of the crossover band N.W.77 here in Brasília (capital of Brazil). Since 95, I have played in several bands such as Lemon-Squeezer, Macakongs 2099, Deceivers and Sapatos Bicolores. After a while away, in 2010 I created N.W.77 as a studio project initially to play hardcore with influences from punk to metal. But quickly, the desire to play live returned and already made me gather friends and turn the project into a band. From then on, there were many shows in our city and in other Brazilian states and several releases.

How did you come up with your band name?

Marcel: N.W.77 stands for Nuclear Weapon 77. Hence, as there are many Crossover Hardcore bands with a tradition of names in acronyms like D.R.I., S.O.D. and even D.F.C. here in Brasilia, it ended up being N.W.77, which matched the band’s logo a lot.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

Marcel: We are from Brasília, Federal District. The scene is very good! Several excellent bands are active. From veterans of the 80’s and 90’s to very young kids who started playing during the pandemic, the overall quality is very good. There was a lack of a greater diversity of spaces with a good structure for shows, but people use creativity and occupy wherever possible. We did a show by ourselves in partnership with friends from Low Life, behind a gas station, and it was a lot of fun for us and for the audience.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Marcel: This year we released our new EP called “Touching The Terror”. 4 unreleased songs and some bonuses. The EP came out in CD format by the labels Helena Discos and Two Beers or Not Two Beers, on 7” vinyl by Lombra Records and in K7 format by the Hungarian label Drinkin Beer in Bandana.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Marcel: N.W.77 is influenced by bands that we have always listened to, like Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, Misfits, Ratos de Porão, S.O.D., Lobotomia, and Municipal Waste, to name a few. Old school Hardcore Thrash crossover mostly.

What first got you into music?

Marcel: I started listening to music on the radio, going to school, in the school van (Kombi). After some time, I focused on Rock and I learned to play acoustic guitar and so on. Until I saw the Faith No More concert in Brasília in 91 and I was fascinated. When they played Black Sabbath’s War Pigs, Mike Patton climbed into a stadium structure and jumped until it broke. He fell and was taken to the infirmary, while the band finished the song, only the instrumental. There I went crazy to have a band. Later, when I moved to the Setor Leste (a local school), I met less mainstream bands and underground record stores in the city. There, I understood that I needed to make my band too.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

Marcel: Difficult question. I think it would be Ratos de Porão or Anthrax. But in fact, we are already very happy collaborating with the bands of the Brazilian underground, where there is a sincere fellowship and mutual support that is priceless.

If you could play any festival in the world, which one would you choose and why?

Marcel: In Brazil, we played in 2 festivals that we admire a lot, which are Hellcife Extreme, in Recife (Northeast of Brazil) and Headbangers Attack here in DF. In Brazil, I personally would like to play one day at Abril Pro Rock (in Recife) and Goiânia Noise (in Goiânia). Abroad, I believe it is unanimous in the band that the festival of our dreams is the Obscene Extreme Festival! It’s the Disneyland of noise! We celebrate a lot with each Brazilian band that plays there! One day, who knows, maybe our turn will come.

What’s the weirdest gift you’ve ever received from a fan?

Marcel: I don’t know about the other guys, but I got a craft doll with a shirt that had the cover of our “Nuclear Awake” album painted on it. I loved it, actually, and I still have it today.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Marcel: Get off the computer and go to the shows! There, the music catches fire!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Marcel: I think it would be Bon Scott, Jeff Hanneman or Eric Carr. Surely the other guys in the band must have other answers.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Marcel: What I like is to play with PC and Marcinho Montalvão (guitarists), Paulo Vinícius and Rodrigo Pinto (drummers). It’s priceless to play with such sensational and talented guys! Since the album Nuclear Awake (2015) the best compositions are from PC and Marcinho! I think it’s great because I can focus more on improving my vocals mainly.

What do I hate most about being a musician and having a band? Social Media! I made and still make friends through the band and networks, which is the cool part. But this need that we currently have to keep social media always active, I think it sucks. I understand that it is a necessary evil, which I end up taking the lead, but what I really like is to meet people at the shows and exchange ideas in person.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Marcel: I have no idea. We are an independent band. The music industry completely ignores us. So “our” music industry is the underground, and here it’s cool as hell!

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Marcel: “Among The Living” by Anthrax… or “Arise” from Sepultura… or “Stranger Than Fiction” by Bad Religion… or “Kiss Alive”… or “Brasil” of Ratos de Porão… impossible to name just one!

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or Downloads?

Marcel: I think all formats are valid, including K7, and we have some releases in this format. I personally listen to a lot of CDs. I prefer physical media in general. I believe that when I’m putting on an album to play, looking at a cover and a booklet, I connect more with the music. And he ended up listening to CDs because it’s still a little more practical to listen to than LPs, which I also like a lot. Streaming platforms I listen to more in the car or at the gym, or to listen to a release that I don’t have the physical album yet. I think all formats are valid. The important thing is that you keep listening to music and support the artists you like.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Marcel: Backstage Bar in Natal/RN, on August 3, 2025. I think this is unanimous in the band.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Marcel: I am, in addition to being a musician, a systems analyst. Music doesn’t pay any of our bills, but it’s not a hobby, it’s something we breathe every day.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Marcel: The other 4 guys in the band and a very famous businessman in Brazil called Edson Lima. Certainly, it would teach us a lot about life.

What’s next for the band?

Marcel: The idea is to record and release a full album in 2026. And continue playing wherever possible, maybe outside Brazil.

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

There’s a long-standing food-based debate here in the UK. And we’d like your help. So… A Jaffa cake – is it a cake or a biscuit? Discuss!

Marcel: I’ve never eaten a Jaffa Cake in my life. But from the photos I saw on the internet, it seems to be a cookie. And they seem to be very good! Who knows, maybe someone will take us to play in the UK, and we can try it and have a final verdict!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?Marcel: I would just like to thank you for the space provided! And invite everyone who enjoys a hardcore thrash crossover with a lot of humour, sarcasm and irony, to try to listen to N.W.77 on all platforms. We also have records and shirts for sale, just get in touch. Thanks!
