They say music is medicine and can heal…and Amulets are the living embodiment of that old adage! Another offering from Pelagic Records never-ending conveyor belt of experimental artists that challenge what music can be, “Rem(a)inders” is medicinal healing in digital format! This isn’t going to be one to be dissected with technical analysis of the music. This really is one to just be experienced and one to process through your emotions. Because trust me, this is an emotional rollercoaster!
With the pressures of modern living, it can be difficult to find any semblance of calm. “Rema(i)ders” can be the vehicle to cut out any exterior noise of the world and to allow yourself that rare moment of quiet and reflection, This is achieved through rather simple yet powerful streams of dreamlike synths and densely layered atmosphere that’s almost tangible and certainly palpable. It feels like time slows to a glacial drip once you become immersed in such a stream. This sounds like the description of a Reiki masterclass album…and that’s exactly the vibe you’ll get and the analogy being portrayed here, such is the ability to lull you into a relaxed and trance-like state. Genuinely, this could be a solution for insomniacs or an aid to cope with anxiety…and that’s no hyperbole. How composer Randall Taylor achieves this through a mix of analogue tapes and ambient guitars is truly remarkable. He has a deep understanding of both musical technology and human psychology far deeper than the seemingly simple compositions would dictate.
But this is coming from a guy who loves the wacky and weird left field of left field music! For more people, they may point to the minimalist nature of the album as being just that; far too minimalistic, under-stimulating, and even boring! Well, their loss. I certainly don’t feel that way and will gladly have this on repeat! Fans of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and This Will Destroy You will also be enamoured by this challenging and thought provoking work. Who knows when they’ll be in the UK next but they’d be right at home at the likes of ArcTanGent!
