EMQ’s With The Astral Prophets

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Canadian Cosmic Metal/ Power Groove band, The Astral Prophets. Huge thanks to their Bass player, Terence Savage, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Terence Savage. I play bass. AJ, Celine and I previous of the “Scythia” Days missed jamming. Early 2019, we started jamming some Grand Magus and Clutch songs together and I eventually brought some riffs that became Firewall, USB and Lazerwitch. The concept and theme of the band is designed around the idea of a not-so-distant, roboto-cratic dystopian future. Space, aliens, techno-organic viruses, the works!

How did you come up with your band name?

I really wanted to call the band Lazerwitch, but that got vetoed for being a little too cheesy. We knew we wanted it to match with our techno-organic cyberpunk theme. We honestly threw ideas into a name generator and The Lunar Prophets popped out. We replaced Lunar with Astral and the rest is history.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are from the city of Calgary in Canada. There is a decent and dedicated scene here for the small venues when it’s not -30 C and there is 5 feet of snow. The Pandemic definitely changed the scene and a lot of bands disappeared, but a lot of new bands formed at the same time.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We released our first single, ‘Into Nothing’, from our first full length Album “Invasion”. On Oct 1st, our new single, titled ‘Invasion’ was  released.

Who have been your greatest influences?

For myself, it’s been Metallica, Guns n’Roses, Grand Magus, Clutch and Unleash the Archers.

What first got you into music?

I learned Piano when I was 5, and moved onto Clarinet but then I heard metal music and decided…yeah bass sounds way more fun.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I would love to either sing/scream or write a song alongside Grand Magus.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

The most obvious answer for all metalheads is Wacken, but I would like to play Hellfest, Ozzfest (if it returns), and 70,000 Tons of Metal.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I don’t think I’ve ever received a gift from a fan.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Stay tuned! “Invasion” is going to be absolutely fantastic.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Ozzy. I’m still really sad about that one.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I absolutely love playing live. I get to go wild, and it’s usually the most fun I’ve had all month, but I absolutely hate the manic setup we have to go through to get on stage. I really need my own roadie.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

The music industry seems to be leaning more towards the 1%, just like the economy. Only the rich can make it because they get access to all the best equipment, studios, and promotion, etc. I wish that more local bands could get recognition and plays, even if it was local radio. That way their music could get to the right ears.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Garden of Heathens by Eastern High.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Vinyl. I have quite the collection.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

We got the chance to open the Hyperspace Festival 2025 in Vancouver. We all had an absolute blast playing the Cobalt.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Brewing Beer & Mead.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

The original lineup of Guns n’ Roses, and then I would watch the spaghetti fly.

What’s next for the band?

We got to get out of Alberta and play some shows in the neighbouring provinces and hopefully get onto some nearby Festivals like Armstrong Metal Fest, Alternate Waves Fest, & Loud as Hell.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

I’m going to go with Muffin…as in English Muffin.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

It’s time to break the stigma against Bass Players! Some of us can actually play!
