EMQ’s With Born From Lie
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Born From Lie. Huge thanks to their singer, songwriter, and founder Jérôme for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is Jérôme. I play guitar and sing. The band was formed in 2014, and we have released three albums. After a long break of almost ten years, I decided to revive the band.
How did you come up with your band name?
The name Born From Lie is a mix of something personal and something universal.
The band was born after the split of my previous band because of all the lies told by one of the members. We decided it was impossible to play with him anymore, so the band stopped.
At first, it was the name of a song, but we decided to keep it as the band name.
What I also like is that it represents my vision of the world and the darkest parts of our society.
What country/region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
I am from Paris, France. We’re supposed to be a “non-rock” country, where rock and metal are underground music, but I think that has changed.
With the internet and social media, rock and metal are alive! We have several metal festivals, such as Hellfest and Motocultor.
What is your latest release?
We have just released our first video, “Our Darkest Hour,” which is an extract from our upcoming album, Into Madness, which will be released in November.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Hard to answer! I am a big fan of Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Arch Enemy, King Crimson, The Who, Blackfoot, Nightwish, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Guns N’ Roses, Savatage, and many more!
But I don’t know if you can hear much of them in my music! Maybe you can tell me better than I can.
What first got you into music?
I remember two songs that changed my life:
“Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana and “You Could Be Mine” by Guns N’ Roses.
They made me want to start playing guitar.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?
I don’t know. I have so many dreams and so many heroes! I am just an underground musician who plays in his living room!
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
I would be very grateful for any festival that would welcome me!
If I had to pick one, I’d say Hellfest because I have been there several times as a fan, and it would be a dream to play there.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Sorry, I have nothing that comes to mind!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Into Madness is finally the album I wanted to make. I am really proud of it, and I hope you’ll take the time to listen to it and enjoy it!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Hard question. Maybe someone from the infamous 27 Club… So many great musicians passed away far too young.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love playing music. What I love the most is creating.
What I hate… I don’t know if I really hate it, but I find it difficult to promote music today. You have to be a YouTuber and a social media master if you want your music to be heard. You have to be present all the time on social media, have a channel, do podcasts…
I can’t do podcasts or things like that. It’s not me, so I hope the music will speak for itself!
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Streaming! I think it has killed a lot of bands. Tickets and merch have become more expensive because they are now the only ways for bands to survive.
Sometimes I can’t afford the tickets for bands I used to see a lot. It’s sad!
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Youthanasia by Megadeth. It’s not just one of my favourite Megadeth albums; it’s the album that made me discover Megadeth! So it has a special place in my heart.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or Downloads?
I think vinyl is the best way to listen to an album. You need time to listen to vinyl: you have to choose one, clean it, and take care of it.
I think it puts music where it’s supposed to be: something precious and important.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
We have played a few nice shows that remain great memories.
I think the release party for our last album, New World Order Part I, is a great memory.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I work in the film industry, so music is just my passion. I think it’s very hard to earn money from music in France today.
Who are the five people you’d invite to a dinner party?
My family and close friends!
What’s next for the band?
The album will be released in November, and I hope to find a new lineup for the tour.

There’s a long-standing food-based debate here in the UK. And we’d like your help. So… A Jaffa cake – is it a cake or a biscuit? Discuss!
No doubt it’s a biscuit!
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thank you!
Underground bands need support! If you like what we do, feel free to share and like. It’s always helpful!
