Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Canadian Ameridian Rock band VAYA. Huge thanks to them for taking part!
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Phil: My name’s Phil, I play the guitar and the band started more than 2 years ago. Vaya created the band then Raph’ joined her and then I joined them too. The band is based on the Indians of North America, so we play Ameridian Rock and it’s influenced by the legend of the white wolf.
VAYA: Hey there. Yes, VAYA is the voice of the elders. I am playing everything that can be an expression of music. Basically I am the lead singer and composer.
How did you come up with your band name?
VAYA: As said before. We just answered to the call of the white wolf and are now dancing around the sacred fire 😉
What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?
Phil: I’m from Switzerland and yes there are a few metal scenes there but I don’t know much about that.
VAYA: Where am I from? You mean in this actual life? 😀 (Laugh) I can’t answer that question; I am still working on it to have the real truth 😉
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single or Video)
VAYA: A first double album called VAYA. A limited edition of 1,000 copies numbered by hand, so let’s choose your favourite number 😉

Who have been your greatest influences?
Phil: The guitarist of “Extreme” Nuno Bettencourt is my greatest guitar hero and I’m very influenced by Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and the guitarists of “Iron Maiden” too!
VAYA: Jim Morrison, Native Indians of North America and classical music!
What first got you into music?
Phil: When I was a kid, my mom played a lot of piano and my dad the guitar. First, I started learning the piano with my mom and then, the guitar with my dad. Later, I started taking guitar lessons with a teacher and that’s where I started playing the guitar seriously!
VAYA: I did not have the choice. Music chose me “officially” since I was 3 years old.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
VAYA: Jack White.
Phil: I’d choose “Extreme”!
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
VAYA: I love to be on scene so every festival in the world!
Phil: I’d choose Wembley, lol coz it must be so amazing and so awesome too!!!!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Phil: Oh, I never received any gift from a fan, lol!
VAYA: a kiss? ;-P
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
VAYA: WE LOVE YOU!
Phil: Have fun, enjoy and keep on rocking!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
VAYA: my Jim M.
Phil: I’d say Bon Scott, former singer from AC/DC.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
VAYA: feeling full of life and creativity unlimited.
Phil: I love playing on stage in front of an enthusiastic audience and going on tour! I hate when we have bad conditions in the places where we play and when people aren’t friendly with us!
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Phil: I don’t know, better promote new bands!
VAYA: More focus on authenticity.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
VAYA: The Doors – ‘Crystal Ships’
Phil: The album of “Extreme” called “Pornograffitti” is really great and I’m very inspired by it!!!!
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
VAYA: Vinyl
Phil: I prefer CD’s!
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
VAYA: still waiting for it
Phil: It was at “The Dukes” bar last year coz there were so many people and they were so amazing and unbelievable!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
VAYA: What I am doing today, painting, writing, healing and taking care of my family and friends.
Phil: Oh I really don’t know what else I could be doing honestly, lol!
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Phil: Oh maybe my family or other friends.
VAYA: My kids, my partner and my pets 😉
What’s next for the band?
VAYA: So actually in Toronto on process for the second album that will be burn on vinyl. It’s a long process. We are finishing the master of one piece of it and I was in Japan to do the video clip. We hope it will be out this Autumn it depends on the festival in Fukuoka (Japan). And in 2020 a new Canadian tour and working on a South America tour + UK (2020).
