EMQ’s with FULCI
Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Italian based Death Metal band FULCI! Huge thanks to band member ‘Dome’ for taking part!
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hi everyone my name is Dome and I play guitar, synth and drum programming in the band called Fulci. The band was born in 2013 with me, Fiore on vocals and Klem on bass guitar. We know each other since 20 years or more and we just decided to put together two things we love: horror movies and death metal.
How did you come up with your band name?
Our favourite director is Lucio Fulci and we think that his gore movies influenced a lot the themes and the esthetic of many extreme metal bands. Our idea since the beginning was to make music inspired by Lucio’s movies so we simply decided to call the band with his name.
What country are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
We are called Fulci because he was Italian like us. We were born and raised in Caserta a small town near Naples in the South of Italy. South Italy has never been on the metal/rock map so there is not a real scene, that’s why we created a crew called CBC (Caserta Beatdown Commando) made up of local bands, tattoo artists, writers and producers that help each other out.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single or Video)
Our last release is “Tropical Sun” a full length concept album based on the movie ‘Zombi 2’. The previous album was based on the movie “City of the Living Dead” and our idea is to go on making albums based on the Lucio Fulci movies. Guess which will be the next? The artwork was made by Misanthropic art and we love it. Inside the booklet you can find another ‘Zombi 2’ inspired artwork by our talented friend Danny Bellone.
Who have been your greatest influences?
We listen to a lot of music, from electronic to hardcore, from punk to stoner but the main influences in Fulci is death metal and movie soundtracks. We are influenced by the NY death metal scene (Suffocation, Mortician, Necrophagia) by the Morrisound era of Cannibal Corpse, Gorguts, Obituary or Morbid Angel. We have also some slam influences coming from Internal Bleeding, Disgorge, early Dying Fetus and Devourment and some epic influences coming from early Nile or Bolt Thrower. We are influenced also by the soundtrack composers such as Fabio Frizzi, Goblin or Carpenter.
What first got you into music?
My family is very big and full of amateur musicians so I grew up listening to music and seeing people playing but my cousin Rocco was the first one to introduce me to the metal world! He did for me a mixtape with Sepultura, Obituary, Life of Agony and Machine Head! Thanks to him and to my family.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Fabio Frizzi or Mortician!
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Sundance Film Festival to bring Lucio where he deserves to be or Burning Man because it has an incredible scenario!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Strange drugs maybe?
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Life is awesome so don’t take for granted any of your days on this planet earth and of course listen to death fucking metal!
If you could bring one Metal/Rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Chuck Schuldiner of Death!
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
The energy that you can feel between the band and the people during the show is something I really like, it is powerful. I hate to clean up the stage and load the van!
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I’d like to change the word “industry” with the word “factory” like the Andy Warhol one.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Cannibal Corpse – “Tomb of the Mutilated”
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Vinyl and Spotify!
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
We just came back from a tour on the US West Coast! All the gigs were wicked! Especially Las Vegas Death Fest where Roger from Mortician saw us playing!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
The actor, the photographer or the skater!
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
I will cook a very good Italian pasta, I’ll open up a good red wine bottle and invite for dinner: Lucio Fulci, Chris Barnes, Uma Thurman, Killjoy (Necrophagia Vocalist R.I.P.) and Danny Trejo.
What’s next for the band?
We will make some gigs in Italy and hopefully in Europe to promote the new album. Time to Kill Records is helping us so much and in September they will drop “Tropical Sun” in vinyl format. Then we will start to work on our third album.
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
I’m an Instagram addict so you can find the band under the name FULCICULT . Our personal Instagram pages are PIZZASTYLE, MATUL TRIBAL CULT and KLEM DIGLIO. We are also on Facebook as Fulciband. We have also a CBC store at www.cbcunited.com.
Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?
You can call it “biscake” or “cakesquit”.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thank you so much for the interview and hello and grazie to all the readers! Support death metal. Fulci lives!
