Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Salem, US based Djent/Metalcore band Renascentia. Huge thanks to them for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Renascentia are:
Elijah Reiter – Vocals
PJ Goering – Guitar
Patrick Allen – Guitar
Adam Hayes – Bass
Aaron Meyers – Drums

The band was started by Elijah and PJ in 2015, after the end of their previous band, with the goal of combining the heaviest elements of metal with more melodic influences.

How did you come up with your band name?

The entire concept of Renascentia was a fresh beginning from the collapse of Elijah and PJ’s previous band, and we wanted the name to reflect that. While brainstorming different ideas, we settled on “rebirth” and did a quick google search for similar phrases and different languages. We decided “Renascentia” was a fitting name!

What country are you from and what is the metal scene like there?

We’re from the United States. The metal scene here is definitely alive and well, but takes some work to get in to, especially as an up-and-coming band. There’s no shortage of people willing to go to shows and have a good time though.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We just put out a video for our new single, ‘Torn’, on March 13th.

Our new EP “Dead Reflections” Came out on March 20th and is available everywhere.

Who have been your greatest influences?

There’s so many we could list! A few big ones are: Veil of Maya, The Word Alive, As I Lay Dying, John Petrucci, Of Mice & Men, and Northlane.

What first got you into music?

Music has been a force in all of our lives for a very long time. Rick was born into music with his mother being a musician. Same thing with Adam, whose father founded Doctor Dream Records. PJ discovered his passion for music after being gifted a guitar that his father received with a car purchase. Elijah has always had an interest in music, but really focused in on it when gifted with a guitar for his 12th birthday. Aaron grew up around punk and metal music and started playing drums in 6th grade after years of begging for a drum kit.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

We couldn’t pick just one; Marc Okubo (Veil of Maya), Misha Mansoor (Periphery), or CJ McMahon (Thy Art Is Murder).

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Again, it’s so hard to pick just one! Either Aftershock, Wacken, or Deathfest.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

We haven’t gotten a lot of weird gifts, but Rick received a handmade DIY guitar strap from a fan of ours at a hometown show. Thanks, Alex!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Don’t ever give up on your dreams and don’t be afraid to fail. When you feel like giving up, that just means you need to push even harder!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Mitch Lucker, Elvis Presley, or Andy Wood (we’re so bad at picking single answers, sorry).

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

The best part about being a musician is definitely watching the audience light up and go crazy after we’ve spent countless hours practicing and perfecting our performance! The worst part is probably the crazy amount of work that goes on behind the scenes; there’s so much more that has to be done aside from just “playing music”.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Higher pay for everyone involved and more accessible venues and shows for underage music fans.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“What Separates Me From You” – A Day To Remember – Aaron
“Colors” – Between The Buried And Me – Rick
“Portals” – Arsonists Get All The Girls – Adam
“Singularity” – Northlane – Elijah
“[id]” – Veil Of Maya – PJ

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Downloads for convenience, vinyl for pleasure (Rick says CD’s for 90s nostalgia).

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

There’s been so many amazing shows we’ve played. But probably the best so far was our last hometown show; Salem definitely knows how to bring the energy we need for great shows!

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

“If I wasn’t a musician, I’d be dead.” – Aaron

“No clue; this has been my dream since I was 13.” – Rick

“Probably something else in the music industry. There’s always something for everybody.” – PJ

“Probably making robots to fight in deathmatches or training dogs for circus shows.” – Adam

“Audio production/engineering, which I actually do already.” – Elijah

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Wow, this is harder than you’d expect to limit to just 5. Let’s say Al Capone, Kanye West, Gilbert Gotfried, Bernie Sanders, and you (if you’re down to party).

What’s next for the band?

With our new EP coming out on the 20th, we’re going to continue playing shows/touring to promote it when we can, work on playthrough videos, more music videos, and continue writing music for new releases (which never really stops with us).

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

“Jaffa cakes, we don’t see them much in America. But, when we do, we eat them and enjoy that sweet orange filling. My take on the legendary debate is that it’s Jaffa CAKES and you can ask the factory workers in Manchester; the answer is in the name.” – Adam

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

We’d like to add a huge thank you to everyone who has been supporting us over the years! We are extremely grateful and inspired by everyone who has given us a chance and listened to our music; we’re just getting started.
