Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Kuopio, Finland based Heavy Metal band Perpetual Rage. Huge thanks to guitarist Petri Hallikainen for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Petri Hallikainen and I play the guitar.

The band was formed in the summer of 2009. At that time, we had a band called Darcade, then we decided to change the singer, so Tomi Viiltola came to the ring, and we also changed the band’s name to Perpetual Rage.

The current members at the time were me, singer Tomi and drummer Kari Hyvärinen, guitarist Ossi Kuokkanen and bassist Lauri Koslonen were also present.

Lauri quit in 2010 and was replaced by Ari Helin and Ossi quit in 2014. Since then, we haven’t taken another guitarist into the band because we found that we’re doing well on one. Drummer Kari was in other patterns in 2010-2014 and was replaced by Jake Kokkonen in 2010-2013 and then by Erkka Närhi in 2013-2014. In 2014 Kari returned to the band, so the current quartet has been together since then.

We did demos in 2009-2012.

The first album “The New Kingdom” was released in 2015.

The second album “Empress Of The Cold Stars” was released in 2017.

How did you come up with your band name?

We had a few name options, eventually we ended up developing a name that Tomi had already been planning for some time, and it was Perpetual Rage. The name Perpetual Rage means to us the relentless making of heavy metal, with attitude and rage, hahhah!!

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Finland, a city called Kuopio.

There is a hell of a good metal/rock scene in Finland, and Kuopio. You know, Children of Bodom, Stratovarius, Stone and so on, many great bands come from Finland. And of course, Tarot from our hometown Kuopio! The level and professionalism is high in Finland.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

The third album “Flames From Below”, which we released on June 15th, 2020.

The latest video is the album’s title track ‘Flames From Below’.

Who have been your greatest influences?

For me, 1970´s heavy rock/metal (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep), 1980´s heavy rock/metal (Judas Priest, Mötley Crüe, Iron Maiden, Dokken, Tarot, Yngwie Malmsteen, King Diamond and so on), Progressive heavy/metal (Symphony X, Fates Warning, Queensrÿche and so on) and some blues and jazz masters also, and of course southern rock, has influenced me the most in music. And I´m a huge thrash metal fan (Testament, Slayer, Exodus, Skull Altar (hahhaa!!) and so on ). And death metal (Morbid Angel, Possessed, Messiah Paratroops) bumps to me too.

Tomi has pretty much the same influences as me.

Ari goes more into traditional hard rock and heavy metal stuff.

Kari is a black metal men, but he is also heavy rock & metal man, a lot.

What first got you into music?

In the 1980’s, when I was a kid, I saw a lot of hard rock / metal music videos from that time. I was like woooow what the hell is this, sounds so good, looks good (hahhah!), and I thought it would be nice to play the guitar myself too. So, I started playing guitar. And why the guitar? Well, it just looked and sounded good.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I don´t know, I´m happy with Perpetual Rage and thrash metal project Skull Altar. I also play in Hellboozer Union, that´s enough for me. It might be great to collaborate with the old Blackfoot band, but that’s not possible.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Nummirock in Finland. A legendary Finnish metal fest with hellish audience! And we have never played there before.

Wacken Open Air. Probably Europe’s largest metal festival, the experience would probably be staggering. We have never been there before.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

We haven’t received any weird gifts from the fans. That´s weird hahhah!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

You have one life, live it rocking hard and enjoy your life!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Ronnie James Dio!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I enjoy being able to create new rock and metal music for the band and rehearse it for live performances. And the freedom to carry it out without anyone interfering with it.

I hate travelling between cities when you are on the road. It is boring, but it is a necessary evil. Where the hell is a teleportation device, hahhah!

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

The music industry is a multi-headed monster. Commercialism and the wonders of single hits should be eliminated. The big record companies listen to nothing but money. Fuck them.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

This latest “Flames From Below” album is the best thing that has been done. Exceeded all requirements.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Absolutely vinyl! Warm sound, lively atmosphere! Sadly, my vinyl player broke down, need to get a new one.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

KuopioRock Festival 2018. The first time we played there, and the feeling was awesome. Warm summer night, a little bit of beer, and there we rocked the night in.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

A porn star career! Haha!

Well, I really can’t imagine anything other than playing the guitar. I have a day job, but it’s nothing compared to this heavy heaven.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Ozzy Osbourne, Jenna Jameson, Donald Trump, Reilu-Seppo, Jani Vartiainen.

The hellish quintet!

What’s next for the band?

Gig as much as possible.

Composition and training of new songs.

Well that is, the basic thing for us.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Biscuits of course! Impossible delicacies!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thanks for reading this. Enjoy life and rock pretty fucking hard!
