Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Taguatinga, Brazil based Thrash Metal band Phrenesy. Huge thanks to vocalist Wendel Aires for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

First of all, it’s a pleasure to talk to you my friend Victor.

My name is Wendel Aires, I’m vocalist of Phrenesy. The band was formed in 2003 by Josefer Ayres (drummer) and Tiago “Xupita” (guitarist).

How did you come up with your band name?

Two crazy men, Tiago and Josefer, chose the name and later other crazy guys joined the band. Hahahahahaha

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Brazil and we live in Brasília, the capital of this country. The Rock scene here is amazing; there are many fucking great bands. As everyone in Brazil says, Brasília is the capital of the rock!!!

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We released our debut album in 2014 called “THE POWER COMES FROM THE BEER” and also released a video clip for the song that carries the album’s name.

Who have been your greatest influences?

I am eclectic; I like all kinds of music, some singers such as Freddie Mercury, Dio, Chris Cornell, Max Cavalera, Phill Anselmo, Serj Tankian, Eddie Vedder and bands like Sepultura, SOAD, Pantera, Anthrax, Megadeth, Angra, Krisiun, Lamb of God, Slayer, Death…

What first got you into music?

I started singing in a Hardcore Christian band (laughs) in 1999. In 2004 Josefer invited me to join Phrenesy.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I would like to do something with Fernanda Lira (Crypta, former Nervosa). She is an amazing and a lovely person!

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Extreme Obscene fest. This one is fucking insane, hahahahaha.

Hellfest, Wacken, and Download too.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

A drink called “drink do inferno” (A Drink from Hell in English), that was pure poison!!! Hahaha

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Be yourself, don’t matter with another opinion about you and if you do not know what to do, open a beer and relax. Stay safe!!!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love to be on stage sharing great moments with our fans and I hate prejudiced people.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Play heavy metal music on all the radio stations!

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

This question is difficult to answer, to be honest, I don’t know. Maybe “Reinventing the Steel” or “Beneath the Remains”, but the first album that drove me crazy was Nevermind when I was a teenager, this one made me love rock and roll!

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s, or Downloads?

Nowadays, download, but vinyl is the best!

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Opening the show for Destruction and Warrel Dane (Brasília, May 16th of 2016)!

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Unfortunately, we don’t live by our music yet. I am an executive driver and I hope one day I can live only to play heavy metal.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Oh my Gosh! I have no idea, so I invited Fernando César (Guitarist of Flashover), Xupita, Josefer, Aluísio, and you!!!

What’s next for the band?

We are producing our second album that will be released in the next year.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

I don’t know cause I just like “cuscuz” (traditional local food) hahahahahahahahaha

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

In the name of the band, I would like to thank you Victor and every one of the Ever Metal team for the support, you are the guy, one of our best friends ever!!!

(It is Victor here. Thanks, Wendel for your lovely words. My life has not been the same since I met the band in 2015. First, it was just the music and after came the friendship with all members. For sure, it is one of the best things that has happened on this journey in Heavy Metal. All questions from EMQ’s were done by Ever Metal, and I just contacted the band to answer them, but I can say that Ever Metal is very happy to have bands like Phrenesy following the great work from all the crew.)
