EMQ’s with CAPULUS

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Bournemouth, England based high-octane Melodic Rock band Capulus. Huge thanks to vocalist/guitarist Josh Vaughan for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hi, my name is Joshua Vaughan – I am the front man of the band. The band was started officially in 2013 by myself and Thomas Riley the lead Guitarist. After a few line-up changes, even more city moves, we found ourselves living in Bournemouth which is where we met Giacamo Vacca (Drums) and Alex Incani (Bass). They are originally from Sardinia.

How did you come up with your band name?

Tom and I were looking for a name for the band for years. We took a trip to a coffee shop one day in the middle of Exeter and saw written on the wall ‘Capulus’ which we realised meant coffee in Latin. We both love coffee so we thought it would be a cool name for a band.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are now living in Bournemouth, Dorset. The rock and metal scene here is great. There is a great metal bar called Anvil that holds gigs as well as a place called The Madding Crowd which is a bigger venue and again holds lots of rock and metal gigs. We have Southampton on our doorstep also, which has an even bigger rock and metal scene.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our new single ‘All That I Am’ was released on the 2nd of December 2020 and features Leighton Allen the bassist for the highly successful band ‘The Hoosiers’. This track is a softer song that shows a different side to Capulus whilst still possessing the driving guitars and soring vocals that Capulus fans have come to love.

Who have been your greatest influences?

My great influences range from solo artists such as Bowie, Hendrix, Slash, Yung Blud. To bands like, Alter Bridge, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Bring Me The Horizon, Bullet For My Valentine, My Chemical Romance, Megadeth, Metallica, Pantera etc.

What first got you into music?

I was originally part of a barbershop chorus when I was 8, we toured all around the world which got me used to performing on stage. As I got older my father introduced me to Alice Cooper and Meatloaf. From there I seemed to just fall down the rabbit hole of rock and metal music.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Right now, if I could collaborate with any band or artist it would either be Bring Me The Horizon or Yung Blud as I feel like they are bringing harder rock and metal music back into the mainstream media which can only be a good thing for bands such as ours.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Download without a question! I have been there a number of times and I believe it is the pinnacle of any rock or metal artists career, to be able to say that you played at Download Festival.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

We don’t really receive many weird gifts, but I once had a fan try and steal my guitar out of my hand during a show which was…interesting.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Stream our god damn song, we put so much effort in the least you can do is stream it! 😉

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

I think I would bring back Prince because he was someone that I wish I could have seen live.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love performing, the buzz you get when you look out into a crowd that are singing along to your music is like no other. Shows are what I love, packing down and setting up for shows is what I hate.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I think I would want artist to be treated more fairly by the industry. Unless you are a major world-renowned artist there is no money left in the industry after all the sharks have had their feed, nothing but scraps for the people doing the work. Places like Spotify should pay artists better.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Appetite For Destruction” changed my life and made me want to learn the guitar so will always have a special place in my heart.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Vinyl! The crackling sound adds to the feel.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

We played a festival back in our home town called ‘Monster Mash’ which was incredible as we saw all our old friends and buddies from the music scene there.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I would mainly be doing what I do for a day job currently, being a property developer.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Ricky Gervais, Yung Blud, Slash, Ozzy and The Rock!

What’s next for the band?

We are heading to the studio, from 7th December, to record our brand-new EP which will be coming out next year.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

We use our Facebook mainly,
www.facebook.com/capulusband

And also, our website,

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Defo a cake.
