EMQ’s with CYROX

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Leoben, Austria based Melodic Death/Thrash metal band, Cyrox. Huge thanks to bassist Gernot for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

We are Cyrox from Leoben, Austria and we play Melodic Death/Thrash Metal. Our drummer Markus Antoniol and our Bassist (Former Guitarist) Gernot formed the band in April 2016 under the name Black Void. Christian Gallmayer and Andreas Fahrleitner came next. They are both guitarists so Gernot switched to bass. The last one to join the band was our frontman Manuel Kirchleitner. First, we jammed just a little bit, but as soon as we had the first songs, we changed the name of the band to Cyrox and started to take things more seriously. That was around the end of 2016.

How did you come up with your band name?

Every band member had 5 suggestions for our name. Cyrox got the most votes. There is no meaning behind the band name. Gernot just looked for some moon names in our solar system, if there is any good name. But there was nothing fitting. Suddenly the name Cyrox popped up in his head and that’s the story.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Leoben, Austria. It’s the second biggest City in Styria. We have pretty good scene here. The bands know and help each other. So, there is no shortage of gigs to play. But, of course, it could always be more.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our latest and also first release is our debut album “Beyond Control” which came out on March 20th2020.

Who have been your greatest influences?

We have many different influences and listen to every genre of Rock and Metal and we try to form most of these influences into good metal songs. But, of course, there are some obvious influences like Machine Head, Pantera, Lamb Of God or some twin leads like Iron Maiden.

What first got you into music?

Like for many others, it was bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden or Pantera.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

This would be definitely be Lamb Of God. That’s the band everyone loves in Cyrox.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

We have many good Metal Festivals in Europe. Small ones and big ones. But for the bigger ones it would be of course the Wacken Open Air in Germany. Every band would love to play there. Summer Breeze or Party.San in Germany would also be nice. And, of course, Novarock in Austria.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

There were no weird gifts yet, but let’s hope they are coming soon 😉

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Don’t be an asshole, we have way too many here on our planet. Listen to the music you love and have a good time. And fuck racism!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Hm that’s a hard choice between Cliff Burton and Dimebag Darrel. They were both outstanding musicians and left us way too soon. It would be interesting what they would come up with musically these days.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

The best thing is playing live for the metal fans out there. It’s always a ton of fun and a great feeling when you see people moshing and singing along to your songs.

There is not really anything to hate about it, maybe if you have a gig and you have to work hungover the next day.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Nowadays it would be the low payments of the streaming platforms and people should discover more new music. There is so much of it out there. If you look at the big festivals its always the same headliners, which are great bands no doubt about that, but they will be gone some-day, people seem to forget about that, we need more big bands out there.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

For me (Gernot) one of them is Machine Heads “The Blackening” album. It’s the perfect metal album for me. It has everything, ass kicking riffs, a heavy groove, stunning solos and wonderful melodies. And, of course, great lyrics.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I still collect vinyl. I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to music. Recently, I sold all my CD’s which were about 2500. In my car I use Apple music, it’s just comfortable

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

The most fun gig to play was a little gig called “Böller Den Bauer” in upper Austria. It’s hosted by a club called “Metal Heads Austria”. Great guys and hardcore Metal fans who really care about the scene here in Austria. We recently got our membership in this club too.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Our band is still not a full-time job, so we have to still work in our “normal” day jobs.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Keanu Reeves, Ricky Gervais, The Rock, Dave Grohl and Tom Hanks. All down to earth guys. I think this dinner party would be a hell of a night and straight out funny.

What’s next for the band?

For the rest of 2020 we used the Covid pause for writing new songs and hopefully we can return to stages in 2021 to present them.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

www.facebook.com/CyroxBand/
www.instagram.com/cyroxband/
www.cyroxmetal.bandcamp.com/releases

And, of course, all streaming platforms out there. A homepage is in the making.

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Biscuit of course!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Be excellent to each other and rock on!

Cyrox
