EMQ’s with NERVOCHAOS

Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with São Paulo, Brazil based Death Metal band, Nervochaos. Huge thanks to drummer Edu Lane, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Edu and I play drums. NervoChaos was born in September 1996 with the idea of creating extreme, chaotic and aggressive music. Since then, we have released eight studio albums, one live album, four DVD’s, four demo-tapes, two EP’s and did many shows/tours all over the world.

How did you come up with your band name?

We wanted to have a strong and different name, which portrayed our musical style, our city of origin and that was a blend of Portuguese and English. So, we did a brainstorm and we started putting words together until we got to NervoChaos.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from São Paulo, Brasil. The rock/metal scene in Brazil is very strong, very passionate, it has been better structured in recent decades, even though it has never been part of the mainstream, and unfortunately, it has always been quite marginalized. Brazil has always revealed several amazing bands over the years and it has always been a cradle of a very strong musical movement, in the various genres of rock/metal, always with a unique, innovative style and sound.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We have a new album, “Dug Up…Diabolical Reincarnations”, coming out on November 19th thru Xenokorp Records (in Europe). For this album we have three singles and two of them (‘Pazuzu is Here’ & ‘Putrid Pleasures’) are already available on all streaming platforms.

Who have been your greatest influences?

I have several influences, but the first drummers who had a huge impact on me were Philthy “Animal” Taylor, Tony “Abaddon” Bray, Dave Lombardo and Igor Cavalera.

What first got you into music?

In 1982, when I was 10 years old, my uncle gave me a box full of vinyl (LP’s) from bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Grand Funk Railroad, Focus, Yes, Pink Floyd, Queen, and so on. I was hallucinated listening to all these records. So, I started seeking for newer and heavier bands, and on the following year (in 1983), is when I discovered Heavy Metal with bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Venom, Saxon and so many more to list.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I personally would love to be able to do something together with John McEntee (Incantation).

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Playing at festivals is always very special for us. Every festival we’ve had the opportunity to play has been fantastic and we’re really looking forward to returning. We would also love to be able to play at a festival like Hellfest, Wacken or Sweden Rock, because they’re the biggest ones for extreme music there is.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

We’ve received some pretty unique things during all those years, gifts like letters written in menstrual blood, a human skull, a statue handcrafted by a fan and a few paintings too.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Stay safe and keep it fuckin’ METAL!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Lemmy Kilmister.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

What I like most is being able to travel around the world, playing my music, meeting new people, learning about new cultures and living life to the fullest. And I hate it when we can’t play/perform live.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I’d like music to return to being pure. I mean that I am really interested in people singing and playing their instruments because they are passionate about it. I don’t like auto-tune or big over-produced music. Every generation has its pretenders/big egos/stupid crap that sells because it’s easy. I want more of a challenge in my music. I’d like radio to come back, free of syndication, to the old formats with real DJs choosing the music, so that the regional aspect of music would reappear.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

It’s extremely hard to name just one album, but one of my favourites is “No Sleep ’Til Hammersmith” from Motörhead.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

For my taste, I prefer Vinyls and CD’s. I also do like cassettes and I only use digital media to check if I like it and if it’s worth buying the physical material. In my opinion, the only way to support the artists I like is to buy their physical material, so I’m not a fan of downloading.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

For me, all shows are special and unique in their own way, but some end up standing out more than others. Our first show was unforgettable, as well as when we had the opportunity to play in unusual places, such as Japan or Australia or South Africa. But as I said, all shows are very important and special for us and we always try to offer 120% and play like it’s the last show of our lives.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I would probably be working with something related to music, like tour manager, roadie/tech, booking agent, merchandiser, FOH…

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

I would love to be able to invite Jimi Hendrix, Lemmy Kilmister, Phil Lynott, Cliff Burton and Eddie Van Halen.

What’s next for the band?

On November 19th, “Dug Up…Diabolical Reincarnations” will be released by Xenokorp. In February 2022, another new album will be released, this time through Emanzipation Productions and in mid-April we will go on a world tour.
