Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQ’s interview with Dubai based Rock band, Winterburn. Huge thanks to their guitarist/vocalist, Naser, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name’s Naser, I play guitars and sing for the band. The band is basically an offshoot of my solo project. After several years of performing together, we all agreed on just playing under the banner of a band name, rather than being my solo band. The timing worked as I was working on the “Ivory Towers” record at the time.

How did you come up with your band name?

It really just came to me as I was about to have a smoke one winter.

Where are you from and what is the Metal & Rock scene like there?

Our band formed in Dubai and the scene’s decent, but I’ve made the move, and plan to move the band permanently, too, so I’m not keeping up to date much. I think things kind of slowed down after the pandemic. We’ve had loads of metal and rock bands come down thought, everyone from Maiden to Mastodon have performed in Dubai. It’s a strong scene, there are a lot of fans, just wish the bands and musicians got on better.

What is your latest release?

Our latest release is the debut LP “Ivory Towers”, which I recorded with Thomas Pridgen (The Mars Volta, Suicidal Tendencies & more).

Who have been your greatest influences?

As a guitarist I’d say Eddie Van Halen, Hendrix, Randy Rhoads, Michael Schenker, Jake E. Lee, Tony Iommi, Slash, Jimmy Page and Yngwie Malmsteen.

What first got you into music?

My dad introduced me to classic rock bands like The Beatles, and when I was still a kid I got into bands like Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, and Van Halen. I’ve always been an avid music collector, so I’ve been buying records and tapes as far as I can remember.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

I’d say Wolfgang Van Halen, I love his new band and think he’s a brilliant musician.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Definitely Download – been a dream of mine since I was a kid.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Can’t genuinely think of one.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thank you for sticking by us and for the support!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Eddie Van Halen for sure. Still can’t get over his passing.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I just love playing, I love creating and performing live. I love the connection I feel when playing with other musicians in the band, the camaraderie not just as people, but as musicians, when everything is in sync and we’re grooving. There’s nothing better than feeling.

I hate competition, I hate music being used for that kind of vanity. Everyone’s got something to offer, and it should be about having a good time, not inflating egos.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Abolish streaming apps or at least pay musicians properly. I’d also hold promoters accountable for undercutting artists.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Fair Warning” by Van Halen.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or Downloads?

For me personally it would be CDs, granted they’re different to vinyl, but they’re compact, and you get the inlay cards or sleeves, and that’s what I love. I hate how everything’s gone digital, I’m one of those dinosaurs that still buys physical LPs.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

The Middle East ComiCon’ 2018 was a killer show! The band was on fire! But from a crowd response, I’d say the first show we played together in May 2015 was insane. The entire crowd where chanting, singing, and just totally having a good time, which was really awesome.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Most likely be an athlete, or go into motorsports.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Frank Zappa, Ozzy Osbourne, Russell Brand, Joe Rogan, and Bill Murray.

What’s next for the band?

Right now, we’re really keen on getting this record out, then planning to tour sometime next year.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Mainly our Instagram and Twitter account, or my personal ones where I post our stuff too. Our new website will be online within the next two weeks as well. (We don’t use Facebook!) https://www.instagram.com/winterburnofficial/

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Biscuit for sure.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for speaking with us! Just want everyone to look out for our new record, this is real no holds barred fkn rock and roll, and also to look out for us on the road next year!
