New Hampshire’s Northern (formerly Cold Northern Vengeance) take their listener through a journey into the Carpathian Mountains with latest release “Cabin Fever”.

Promising instrumental opener, ‘The Pangs of Natures Indifference’, feels like it’s being plucked from a modern folk-horror movie. It’s creepy and unnerving in the right places and leads well into the urgent, unrelenting ‘Hypothermia’. It does sound like it has been recorded onto a cassette, which I’m not adverse to at all. ‘Outsider’ completely changes the mood as it’s much slower and purposeful. Undoubtedly my highlight track of the release.

I feel that title track ‘Cabin Fever’ tries to be too many things at once, some elements I enjoyed, but overall, maybe one I would skip in future. Unfortunately, this was also the case with the follow up, largely instrumental, ‘Darshana’. It could’ve easily been halved.

‘Alcoholism’ steers the album back in the right direction, it’s a track of 2 halves – Very mellow and quite folky to start with the latter part being the opposite, full on assault with blood curdling vocals. It would have been a great track to finish on, but it’s slightly tarnished by the short disjointed ‘The Final Stage of Paradoxical Undressing’

Although there is a lot going on this release, I can’t help but feel it would’ve worked better as maybe a 4 of 5 track EP.
