I do love it when new bands with great potential come along to grace our review list. And today I am smiling, because one such band has fallen into my pile. Hailing from Essex, UK, Modern Metal band Collected have desires on making a big name for themselves. And off the back of this lovely little EP, I think they may do just that.

Their sound is a meld of lots of things. Opening with the title track, the first thing that hit me was that the clean vocals, in part, remind me of 90’s era Manic Street Preachers. But these vocals sit atop a much heavier and metallic instrumental setting. Strong, overdriven riffs, and pulsing rhythms take things at pace through breakdowns and angry sections, making this a punchy and edgy toe-dipping into the world of the Modern Metal scene.

There’s some real groove going on here too. The second track, ‘Blindsided’ is a shining example of this. I think this is my favourite track. It’s one you can lose your shit and bang your head to. It’s a solid, meat and two veg structure, so you know where you are with it.

However, Collected are clearly a band who don’t like to be penned in by a particular style. ‘Faceless Man’ is pretty manic compared to the friendly familiarity of the previous track, and it keeps you on your toes, as you’re never quite sure where it’s going to go next. I’m not sure about it to be honest. Part of me loves the diversity of it. But I also like to know where I’m at with a song.

‘Mountains’ boxes of this 4-track offering, and again takes a more standard route. But there are some almost industrial elements, sound wise, here. And the vocals feel particularly Grungy. This is a very good start from a very young band. It’s not yet ground-breaking, but it does feel curiously exciting. I will be eagerly following Collected to see where they go next. Well done chaps, well done!
