EMQ’s With RESONANZ

Hi everyone. Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Brazilian Progressive Metal Project, Resonanz. Huge thanks to Keyboard player Vinny, Bassist Gustavo, and Guitarist Hugo for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Vinny: My name is Vinny Maluly, I play Keyboards, and Resonanz has been a project that I’ve had the pleasure of sharing with guitarist Hugo Santiago for a while now. It started in 2015 as an instrumental parallel project and, with time and the right introduction of new members, has turned up to be our main band.

Gustavo: My name is Gustavo Magalhães, I’m the Bassist. This is a Hugo and Vinicius’ project, I was just invited to join lol.

Hugo: Hi guys! I’m Hugo De Castro and I play Guitar. This band started in 2015 as an instrumental project but after the end of Dark Avenger we decided to make it as a full band.

How did you come up with your band name?

Vinny: Resonanz was Hugo’s idea. We were searching for names and resonance came to mind. He then turned it into Resonanz as a German variation and there we had it!

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

Vinny: I’m from Brasília, Brazil. Unfortunately, the Metal/Rock scene here is mostly composed of cover bands formed by very good musicians, who have failed to share their creativity and talent through their own bands and compositions.

Gustavo: I’m from Montellier/France. I have no idea, I just lived there when I was a baby lol…

Hugo: I´m from Brasília, Brazil. I make Vinny’s words mine about the scene here.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Vinny: Our latest release was the EP “Press Start”

(https://open.spotify.com/album/2ebC3398hPqfn3A3fpWQcP?si=unf9oBORSqG42iaQU7OR9A) and a

music video of the song ‘Firewings’

Who have been your greatest influences?

Vinny: I have varied influences. For sure 70’s progressive rock bands have been my biggest inspirations, such as Rush, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd and Emerson Lake and Palmer. More recent bands in the prog spectrum have equally been of great influence, like Dream Theater, Between the Buried and Me, Meshuggah, Periphery, Tesseract, Haken and Riverside. Finally, I have completely different influences, such as in jazz fusion, standard jazz, XIX-XXI century classical music, Bossa Nova, among others.

Hugo: Metal, Prog Metal, Progressive Rock and pop rock from the 80’s.

What first got you into music?

Vinny:  My mother, certainly, is responsible for me getting into music. She raised me hearing tunes that are present to my life until this day, namely Brazilian artists like Tom Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Maria Bethânia, Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso and others. She also loves the Beatles, so that was also a part of my childhood repertoire.

Gustavo: I always like to listen to music. When I was a child I used to sing my own soundtrack while I was playing with other kids. I started to play an instrument cuz I had been watching some people in my neighborhood doing it. Then some friends called me to start a band.

Hugo: Music was always present at home since I was a little kid but I started listening to rock/metal due to my father. He listened to a lot of 70’s prog rock and some more tradicional rock bands.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

Vinny:  It’s very hard to choose. I would pick classic keyboardists, such as Rick Wakeman (Yes) and Tony Banks (Genesis), but also more recent ones, like Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater) and Diego Tejeda (ex-Haken). But I would certainly be fascinated in participating in an Ayreon album. I’m a huge fan!

Hugo: It would be Jordan Rudess and Mike Portnoy. They’re geniuses imo. I would love to collaborate with Frank Zappa if he was alive.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Vinny:  It would be Hellfest or Wacken. They’re just huge and everyone that’s someone has played at these festivals.

Gustavo:  Rock n’ Rio, because it’s in my home country.

Hugo: Wacken, Rock N’ Rio and cruise festivals.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Vinny:  Actually, I’d say that the weirdest gift a fan has asked me for was a keyboard… key.

Gustavo: A sweaty jacket. I still have it… lmao…

Hugo: I was invited to a ménage à trois by a couple.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Vinny:  Spread the word!

Gustavo: I’m coming back, don’t worry… lol

Hugo: I kindly ask to share Resonanz’s music with your friends!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Vinny: Keith Emerson for sure.

Gustavo: Cliff Burt of course.

Hugo: Frank Zappa and Freddie Mercury.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Vinny: It’s incredible to be able to express your feelings through music and lyrics, but the hateful part is the people that don’t want to understand your message constantly try to put you down.

Gustavo: I enjoy the creation part. When you start to see your riffs’ pieces joining together and a song growing up from there. I hate the competition. You know… I’m there just to play my songs and enjoy the gig with my band mates.

Hugo: I enjoy recording and touring. I hate the unnecessary competition between bands. It kills the scene.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Vinny: Definitely access to lesser known bands.

Hugo: The way business is done.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Vinny: Yes – “Close To The Edge”

Gustavo: Quite difficult but  “Burn The Sun” – ARK is a good one.

Hugo: It’s the 1 million question…I would say “Awake” – Dream Theater.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or Downloads?

Vinny: Downloads

Gustavo:  Vinyl is a kind of media that lasts for a long time . It’s good to make your own collection. Digital media you can carry as many as you want inside your cell phone or any other devices. About the quality, I do not see any difference  nowadays. We’re living in the beginning of the digital age and this discussion will carry on for a long time.

Hugo: As a collector, I love Vinyls and CDs but streaming services help us a lot in spreading our music.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Vinny: Porão do Rock, 2015, with Dark Avenger.

Gustavo: I liked a lot to play at Progressive Nation At Sea in 2014, Portnoy’s cruise. I could watch some bands I never see live before and also see some band members in front of me. It was awesome. The food was great too… all the time… lmao…

Hugo: Mike Portnoy’s Progressive Nation At Sea 2014 and Rocklahoma Festival (2009).

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Vinny: I actually also am a PhD candidate in Geography.

Gustavo: Actually I’m a software engineer. I’ve worked in that field for a while.

Hugo: I would love to be a race driver or soccer player…I love sports.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Vinny: My band mates Hugo, Daniel, Victor, Gustavo and, why not, Jennifer Aniston.

Gustavo: Do they have to be alive or not?

Hugo: My family and friends. All I need.

What’s next for the band?

Vinny: In 2022 we’ll put out our first LP! Wait for it!

Gustavo: We’d like a tour, but because of the pandemic,  you know, we have to content ourselves in making new songs to release a new album… or single… how knows? But it’s a good thing, we’ll have more songs lol...

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Vinny: Just look up at  https://linktr.ee/resonanz_band it has the links to all our social media links.

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Vinny: No idea lol.

Hugo: I would say Cake because the name says Jaffa CAKES. I’m a logical guy…hehehehehehe..

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Vinny: I just want to thank you for your interest and support of Resonanz!!

Gustavo: Just thank you for this interview, I hope you enjoy it.

Hugo: I wanna thank Ever Metal and VIctor for this opportunity to show you guys a little bit of Resonanz. I hope you enjoyed it as we did and kindly ask to follow us on our social media. All the best! Cheers!
